I guess I will make my first post to this "Infected" thing now...
First, Does anyone out there see any similarities between the album Dusk
and something George Michael would put out? I really don't see any connection,
but our school newpaper said this and I would like to hear what others think.
Another thing, does anyone have any insight on the meaning of the lyrics from
"Another Boy Drowning"? Even though Matt wrote these lyrics when he was really
young, I think that the lyrics are very powerful. I just want to see what
other fans interpret this song as...
Finally, does anyone have a list of all the songs on Pornography of
Despair?
Bye...
Mark

lyrically and musically, NOOO!!
but . . . Dusk is a very sexy album. to those who might think that mr.
michael's music is sexy might see that similarity.

I used to have that cd of which you speak. Until some bastard broke into
my house and stole all my cd's. So if you live in or around Ontario,
look in used cd stores. That's assuming, of course, that the thief was
fool enough to pawn it. Bastard. Bastard thief. It's one of my
favourite the The songs as well, especially that extended version.

I just picked that single up on CD for $3.98! I was very excited because
it's one of my favorites as well. It has a cool mix of the song that is
almost 7 minutes long. The single is also dedicated to Eugene Johnson. Was
this his brother or father?

There is some great other live stuff on singles packs that came with Dusk.
There is also the alternative version of Infected on the Japanese version.
Other than that, it sounds GREAT!
May I also request, on a separate note, that someone tell me who put out
(record Co.), when it was released on CD, how to order, etc... Marc and The
Mambas. I asked around and no one has heard of it in record stores out

wait!!!!! i wrote what??? i haven't told my story yet, so here goes:
i also have to admit that my first real introduction to the the was dusk. we
were listening to it at work right when it came out. so i borrowed this
friend of mine's complete collection. he had a hard time getting them back
from me. come to think of it i shouldn't have given them back. the the to
this day reminds me of that summer, my best friend and i living in one room
for 3 months. since then of course the the reminds me of a lot of other
things too. some bad some good, the lyrics speak to every emotion and
experience.
oh, i don't know who was dating the same guy as her friend. wasn't me.

i have no idea who is sending mail incorrectly, but it ain't me. the only
mail i have sent regarding how i discovered the the and two girls dating the
same guy was about 10 minutes ago. if you can explain to me why my name is

Yeah guys.....what's going on? It seemed like a lot of people subscribed
becuase there were so many "favorite bands" posts, and now nothing's going
on!!!!!!
Let's get the ball rolling.....those of you still out there....how did you
get to be fan of the The, what was the first song or album you heard, why
are you a fan, what does the music mean to you personally?
Personally I got into them about three years ago when my roomate and this
guy we both ended up dating (don't ask) were into them. My roomate had the
CD Mind Bomb and we used to listen to all the time.....I had a tape made of
her CD which I used to listen to constantly, and then I eventually got all
the albums and they are now my favorite band.
I got into Soul Mining last but it's my favorite album now. The hilarious
thing is that I thought they were broken up until I turned on MTV one day
and saw the video for "Dogs of Lust" and said, "that's not an old
video....wait a minute...they must be still together....I may actually get
to see them perform!!!"at which point I did a happy dance around the room
and immediately went out and bought Dusk. Basically I like them because of
the intelligence of the lyrics and the dark and cynical view Matt takes on
life, sex, politics and religion which are similar to my own.....there is of
course more to it than that, the "indefinable" way the music makes me feel
and how it has helped me get through
certain periods in my life.
I saw him perform in July of 1993 - unfortunately Matt wasn't at his best
because it was a small audience and the opening act canceled - I think that
pissed him off and he only did 8 songs with no encore. In December of that
year, though, I saw him when the The toured with Depeche Mode, and he was
absolutely on fire, and of course I was in heaven. As much of a fan of DM
as I used to be, after Matt's electric performance they were absolutely
anticlimactic.

I guess this list still exists, 'cause I got your message, but the
traffic has really died down since the Hanky Panky excitement died down.
Maybe we should make up rumours for people to discuss and discredit...Ok,
here's one. Matt Johnson is supposedly recording a cover album of Disney
music. He will bring his musical genius transitions of the classics like
"It's a small world" and "Someday, my prince will come." Seriously,
though, has anyone ever heard what Johnson thinks of Morrissey, or Vica
verca.

If you don't already know, here are some places on the Internet to check out
the The:
http://www.wpi.edu/~thethe/thethe/thethe.html
http://www.music.sony.com/Music/MusicIndex.html
Also, you can email the The's management at THETHEXXX@aol.com.
I checked out the first address, which is a home page on the World Wide Web
for the The.
There is a lot of interesting information, including pictures and lyrics,
but bear in mind it is a work in progress. The person who created it is a
real live human being who you can email and he will respond. I imagine
that this page will grow as he fleshes it out and others contribute to it.
The second is the Sony page, which has information about their artists.
There is a listing for the The in the "Artist Information" section, but
unfortuanately when I went to it the links weren't hooked up. Perhaps this
too is a work in progress. At any rate I imagine that they will fix it
eventually, so keep checking it.

Listened to Bluer than midnight over and over again.
It was the song that my recent ex and I fell in love to a while ago.
Then I listened to selections from all of the rest of his albums.
I was wondering what all the rest of you felt about Bluer. I think it is
musically one of his great songs, the horns is wonderful.
What do you all think about the lyrics?
Very curious to see if others connect to the song the way I do...
I ask myself, where does lust come from. Is it something to yield to or be
overcome? ... Why can't love ever touch my heart like fear does?
I do not notice as much use of questions in his other stuff.
Also, I like the heavy influences here--clearly his own attempt at the kind
of Solitude sound he got on Shades of Blue.
Anyhow.

Not questions maybe, but this is a common theme for him.....it especially
reminds me of the lines in Infected that go "When desire has become an illness,
instead of a joy...."
I especially like the lines "Save me from myself" which echo the lyrics of
"Out of the Blue" (I thought if I acted like someone else, I'd feel more
comfortable, with myself) except that instead of trying to save himself
with a "meaningless overnight relationship" he is trying to find it in the
context of what sounds like a love relationship, even as he acknowledges
that said relatioships are flawed..... a nice evolution, I think, even if it
results in music that is a little weaker - the "kinder, gentler" Mr. Johnson?

Get Infected. Give it a real chance. It has some good stuff on it.
I got into the The when I was convinced by a friend to get Mind Bomb (right
when it came out)--more so he could borrow it than that I could listen to
it./
Gradually, he exposed me to them, and I borrowed his Soul Mining, and that
was that.
Own all the albums, buy new ones the day they are released.

As to this question of how we discovered the the:
I was originally introduced to the the quite inadvertently in 1988. A friend
of mine who was a German exchange student had a dubbed copy of The Smiths'
album 'The World Won't Listen'. I had borrowed the tape not realizing that the
second side was devoted to The The. I put the tape in expecting to hear some
new Smiths songs...and boy did I...I kept thinking, "Gosh, this doesn't even
sound like Morrissey". And, of course, it wasn't. It was "Slow Train to
Dawn", if I remember correctly. It took me a good 20 minutes to figure out
that it wasn't some really new Smiths sound I was hearing. Yet, upon realizing
my mistake, I was quite happy to have discovered a great new band - THe The.

Ah, the foundations for discovering artists...8^)
I was introduced to the The by a friend who had been into the The for a
while.
One day he said, "I thinked you'd like the The". He lent me infected, but to
tell you the truth I didn't like it all that much, so I returned it without
listening to it all that well. Then one day my friend was listening to Dusk
and
I instantly fell for the The. I still haven't really listened to infected

believe he loves that album. it's windka or denny or whatever. dave was

OK, I might as well tell my story instead of just lurking because when
everybody does that, the list ends up like it did for the last two
weeks.
About 1987, a friend of mine told me about this band called The
The. The The?? What the hell kind of name is that. He loaned me a
tape that had that on one side and B-52s on the other. I listened to
the B-52s quite a bit, but only listened to The The a couple times. I
thought "This shit is Wierd!" About a year later, I stuck the tape
back in and really got into it. Then I picked up Soul Mining on Vinyl
and like that even better. (That was a re-release by then. I later
found an original release used. Sorry, just bragging.) A friend of
mine bought Mind Bomb when it came out so I didn't need to buy it for
a while. That became one of my favorite albums that I owned. I
bought Dusk right when it came out, listened to it a couple times,
and thought "That's it?". I was a bit disappointed. It wasn't until
after I listened to it a lot that the beauty of it hit me. It
probably helps that at the time Dusk came out, every single song on
the album fit my life at the time. So in contrast to many of you
folks on here, I think that it's his best work yet. The lyrics are so
personal and fitting. Actually, it's kind of refreshing to me to like
his newest work the best. It's always disappointing when you really
get into a band and the new stuff doesn't live up to the level of the
old. (An example of this for me is the Hoodoo Gurus, another one of
my favorite bands. They're still good, but IMHO, they've been going
slowly downhill since Blow Your Cool. Any Hoodoo fans out there?)
ANYWAY... I'm happy that The The keeps getting better, at least in my
eyes.
I drove to Denver (from Lincoln, NE) a year and a half ago to see
them open for Depeche Mode. I got about a roll of film there, but
they're not that good 'cause I was too far away and didn't have a
great camera (had to smuggle it in). I picked up a bootleg in
Boulder, and have been trying to catch up on all of the singles and
EPs for about the past year and half. I think I've finally got
averything off Dusk, and a few other assorted goodies, both CD and
vinyl. But anyway, I'm babbling. I guess its OK to babble about The
The here, my friends tend to get a little tired of it. Thanks for
reading.
Good luck on finals, all of you that are taking them right now.
Mine aren't for another couple weeks. Later...

Mind Bomb was originally released in May 1989. I'm fairly certain "Jealous of
Youth" wasn't recorded (perhaps not even written) until late 1989. I can check
on the release date of "Jealous of Youth" but my memory tells me early 1990.
Promo word from Epic was that, after the "vs the World" tour was postponed due
to Matt's brother's death, the single was released to renew interest in the
band for the newly rescheduled tour.

Alright, I admit it. I was first exposed to the The by a
friend when Dusk came out. Love at first listen. I finally gave
back his CD after 3 months or so. Since then I have purchase Dusk
(w/the bootleg), Soul Mining, and Mind Bomb. I love them all. My

summer along with Hanky Panky (CDs are cheaper back home). I'm
still reluctant about Infected, but I am slowly liking it better.
It just doesn't resonate in me like the others do. Oh well,

Well me winkda will set this straight. I replied to Dave's message on the list
using exactly that, the reply. This sent my message to Dave not the list and I
realized it right after I sent. Dave was kind enough to forward it. As to
infected, I like it more than soul mining I think, but that is a hard judgement
call. I didn't say I didn't like infected (at least I didn't mean it to come
out that way) it's just that I don't have it and at the time I wasn't too
impressed with it. Therefore I bought all the other CD's which I hadn't heard
previously (except mind bomb and dusk) before I have had the chance to get
infected. I will get infected eventually (I'm not trying to make any pun..8^)
Thanks for forwarding my message Dave.

Where do you get a zillion? I WISH there were a zillion posts a day on this
list!
I get some of my other lists on digest because the traffic is so
overwhelming, but
that's definitely not a problem with this list.

Solitude is basically 2 EPs: Shades of Blue from '91, and Dis-Infected
from '94. I think both of these are UK releases. Songs are:
_
Jealous of Youth |
The Violence of Truth (remix) |
Another Boy Drowning (live) |-- Shades of Blue
Solitude |
Dolphins _|
That Was The Day _
Dis-Infected |
Helpline Operator (sick boy mix)|-- Dis-Infected
Dogs Of Lust (germicide mix) _|
(Pretty fancy, eh?)
Anyway, it's pretty good. I'd pick it up if I were you. There seems
to be some discussion about whether this is out of print, but
regardless, I see it all over so there's plenty in the stores.

All evidence indicates it was simply a preliminary title for "Hanky Panky".

This is true. I also had Mind Bomb several months before it was released in
the USA. The jewel box tray was white instead of the usual black, made for a
very visually distinctive package.

David Jellinek corrected me:
: I think you are wrong about the Shades of Blue song list.
: I own it, and there is no Violence of Truth remix...
: Is it possible there were two versions put out?
:

My mistake. I knew that Solitude was a combination of Shades of Blue
and Dis-Infected so I assumed that everything that was not on
Dis-Infected (which I own) was from Shades of Blue (which I didn't).
However, I just got my very own Shades of Blue CD in the mail
today, and you were right. It doesn't have Violence of Truth.
Everything else is correct though. Thanks for the input. Now if I
would have gotten my mail first...

unfortunately infected is a free forum for the The related
discussions, info, and absolutely *everything else* subscribers would
like to share with fellow listies & fans. i am not an editor , but
only make sure everything runs smoothly and that there are no
technical problems etc.
so: the only alternative to subscribing is to put yourself on a digest
list, and every one or two weeks i will send you *everything* that has
been posted on infected, all in one big huge (or maybe not so huge)
mail. this way it'll be easier to skip stuff you don't want to read,
and your mail box will be less messy.
as a note: this list was born out of the frustration that came
with having to apologize for talking about the The on other lists,
because it was of no interest to many of the subscribers.
now here we have our own list and we can talk about the The as much as
we like without anyone getting on our case, but i still don't think we
should restrict things the way it's done elsewhere.
so: everyone shall post anything they like without having to fear
comments like "can we get beck to such and such topic please"
etc. and we shall hopefully all get along fine. :)
again, if anyone thinks the posts here are garbage (or if you simply
prefer one shot of infected every week or so) there is always the
digest option.
i hope you listies are on the same wavelength with me.. if not, no
problem, we'll work something out.. this shall be the most democratic
list of all times (and the most fun! :)
comments encouraged..
now back to our regular program... :)

you really don't have to dignify this bullshit with responses or
explanations. people don't like it, get the fuck off.
by the way, thethexxx gets a lot of mail, and most people will get a
response, but it might take a while.
what did you want to know about gun sluts? matt has been quite vocal about
it in interviews...
my only comment/complaint about the list is this----do people have to repeat
EVERYTHING from a letter they are commenting on? it is possible just to
make reference to a letter, or copy part of it. it gets a bit pointless readi
ng thru the same letters to find a one sentence comment on the bottom.
and my apologies to amycal. i will never insult her by calling her a
sorority girl again.

I couldn't agree more. I am currently on about a dozen mailing lists.
The volume of messages on this list outnumber that of all the other
lists _combined_, and the content of the messages I receive is almost
entirely fluff.
The kind of casual conversation I see on this mailing list would
probably be better suited to an ALT.FAN.THETHE newsgroup. On a newsgroup,
if I'm not interested in "where each of you were when you first heard
the The", I could just kill the thread and save myself another zillion
vacuous posts.
Now, Behar suggested the digest route, but hey, I still have to weed
through a huge number of garbage messages to get at the few I _really_
want to read.
I don't want to stifle you guys, but if I wasn't such a _huge_ fan
of Matt, I'd have joined the ranks of "unsubscribers" by now.
C'mon guys!! Use a little discretion when you post!
Don't drive away fans who really want to keep up on what Matt's doing!!
I think you will all agree that this is one of the only good sources
of info on the The. Don't spoil it!

Personally, I have to disagree with you. I've been on probably about a dozen
lists in the last five years and this one's about average for traffic. And,
being an unmoderated discussion list is different than what you want, but it's
apparently the closest you'll get. You'll have no choice but to put up with it
or unsubscribe.
For several years I was on the Cure mailing list. Traffic was getting pretty
heavy and the amount of real information I was getting was almost nil. I
unsubscribed. Now that they're approaching a new release, I have resubscribed.
For every twenty or thirty posts there is one with some good information.
That's the signal-to-noise ratio that you've probably heard about. It's a
necessary evil of unmoderated mailing lists.
Originally I was going to send this directly to Brad, and instead I decided to
post it to the list for everyone to read.

I know that its called Gun Sluts, that its written, that it was supposed to
come out winter '95.
Thats all I've heard hims say--I want a release date, some early material,
something interesting about lyrics or style...
You know, the important things...
Anyone?
Also, I agree with the earlier posted comment that Uncertain Smile may be
his best song. But there are other good ones, depending on mood.
Sometimes out of the blue hits me, other times its Jealous of Youth, or
Bluer than midnight...sometimes its just a whole album.
Thanks for info, enjoy the music.

anyone out there shed some light on this ? I thought the support was

I've noticed in the previous mail's that the song "Uncertain smile" has

Hi Mac. I was at the gig where the great falling out happened. It was 11
or 12 december 1993 at Londons Brixton academy. The Auteurs came on first
and were not bad. We were then expecting Matt and company but instead a
comic who is a good friend of Matt called Tommy Cockles came out and
started to tell a few jokes. Luke Haines, the singer of the Auteurs was
furious at "being relegated to third on the bill" He and Matt exchanged a
few angry words. They were then sacked for the remaining dates of the
tour. We were not really aware of this until after the gig. It was a
brilliant show. He played all of Dusk, Heartland, a few from mindbomb and
a lot of soulmining. A brilliant night. Hope this fills you in a bit.

Actually, it's funny because Epic was going to release the Shades of Blue EP
back when the UK one came out. And it was going to include the Violence of
Truth remix on it. At the time, I even got a sampler from Sony that had an
excerpt of the remix. Of course, they ended up scrapping the idea.

Every day there are several people who send "subscribe" messages directly to
the list even though this is not the right way to subscribe.
It's beginning to really irritate me. Obviously there exists some
documentation somewhere that gives erroneous instructions for subscribing to
this list, or the erroneous instructions keep getting propagated through
misinformed people repeating to others. Let's track down this error and fix
it.
Then again, maybe the instructions have changed since I joined and everybody
is doing it the right way, but somehow I don't think so.

For the longest time I thought The The was some kind of Punk/Thrash
band, I mean what kind of band calls an album "infected" and has that
scary cover art ;-) Then my older brother got into them and kept
hammering away at me to listen to them. Finally before Depeche Mode
came to town, I picked up Dusk so I would know something by the
opening band. The next week trekked up to Chicago to see both DM
shows there. The night before the first DM show, The The announced
their special secret show at the Cabaret Metro which my brother
dragged me to. I think that show could have converted my mom into a
The The fan.

Okay, it's 1988. My sister has these two tapes by this weird band the The.
I'm like the Who? (Sorry, bad pun.) At any rate, the first song I heard
was "I've been waitin' for Tomorrow (All of my life)" It was it is, and will
forever be my favorite all-time song. Soul Mining was fantastic. My sister,
who's an idiot, told me that Infected wasn't any good so I didn't listen to it
until after Mind Bomb came out. i loved both of them. I proudly say that I
loved Dusk too, and apprectiate Burning Blue Soul and Hanky Panky.
Another related note. In the fall of 1994, I was rooming with three buddies of
mine, and we had a fourth housemate, who you all know as the infamous Dave
Hirsch. Well, I flipped when I found out he was a the The fan! Two strangers,
who are the The fans living in the same house. Well, I thought I was a fan.
When I spent over an hour looking at all the the The stuff Dave had, I knew he
was insane :) Not really, but I'm sure tha makes sense to a lot of people. So
that's my story, for what it's worth.
P.S. BTW, I prefer P.J. rather than Palmer. I know people could care less, but
what the hell, I thought I'd tell you.

This is exactly the kind of shit that guy was talking about (i.e.,
pointless posts). But then again, so is this.
so i'll put some meat in....a few years ago i was in Atlanta GA and i was
in some record store and i saw some the The vinyl that was quite
strange. It was in a mostly black sleeve but the front had what looked
like Matt Johnson's head, but it was like a negative print (black-white
reverse) and not very clear. But it was a face nonetheless. And the "the
The" logo was in the top right hand corner, also in white. There was no
track listing, or year, or title or anything, and it was sealed so i
couldn't inspect. Then i was rushed to leave so i couldn't ask the store
personel about it.
i have never seen it since and have no idea what it was. It was vinyl
and about $40, so i assume it was rare. Does anybody have any idea what
it was? For all i know, it could have been "porn. of despair"

no use dignifying that sort of crap with a response. I think I've calmed
down now.
I just hope his post hasn't scared off anyone from posting freely what they
will..
I know it made me feel more self-concious about what I was posting.
That's unfair. Like Doug was saying, before that we all felt like we had
something in common because we were the The fans, and so would
enjoy talking to each other in a laid back way without worrying about living up
to some standard as to whether what we were writing was "fluff" or not.
No, I don't like it when people start posting to the listserv their chit
chat about
their social lives and stuff, addressed to one or two other people on the
list...
it makes other people feel left out and should be limited to personal email....
that's what made me sick of the the The folder on AOL. But if one of us has
something we want to share with EVERYONE on the list, they shouldn't be
afraid to post it or feel like they have to live up to the "fluff" police....

Would anybody confirm that the wooden sets are promo items? I have
seen wooden sets for many bands and they are "after-market" items done by
a company and in no way associated with the band. I am not flaming the
person who posted, but I think it would be good to know if it is truly a

I would like to think that the extra tracks that are with
the Soul Mining tape, are songs from those sessions, would you agree ?

well, the new foetus album is pretty wild. it is fun to see how he
influenced matt johnson (the entire infected album) and how matt has
influenced him, as in some moments of this album. and the cover art has
foetus written in the style of hanky panky stars and stripes. pretty cool
folks.

foetus is a guy, a very old friend of matt johson.
they have collaborated now and then over the years, most recently with 3
remixes of dogs of lust. in which foetus used samples from sweet bird of
truth. great shit.
his stuff is mostly industrial sounding, a heavy infuence on idiots like nine
inch nails and cop shoot cop, but the guy is far more talented than that. a
musical genius. mixes in classical and jazz elements into the noise.
and there are some definite matt johnson influences on his new album.
and i once read a review of infected that called it watered down foetus.
which isn't too far from the truth.
and that is who foetus is.
oh yeah, and he also calls himself clint ruin, jg thirwell, steroid maximus,
and wiseblood.

Greetings,
I've signed up for this list-server only recently, and am wondering if
there is any activity that I am missing, as I have not received any
e-mail regarding the The.
Anyhow, if this will spark interest- what is next for the The, i.e. on
the liner notes for "Hanky Panky", there was a reference to an ongoing
series of remakes of classic music (not classical-hopefully... not to
deny their talent, just, it seems improbable.). Any ideas? Also, being
one who almost always seems to miss Matt Johnson talking to MTV news
(better than CNN for hard hitting reporting!!) I might have missed out on
what happened to Johnny Marr. Can someone help me out?
As to how much a fan I am (hey, is that a lyric in the making?), I can
say without hesitation that Soul Mining and Mind Bomb were largely
responsible for me finishing my master's thesis. And I plan on listening
to all the albums to get through my dissertation.
Anyway, I hope this reaches someone.

hi all
I obtained a couple of tapes in Royal Oak michigan last October that are titled
the The: the Rarities Vol. 1 and 2. It has a lot of early mixes of songs and
most of the songs from pornography of despair. Vol. 1 also has controversial
subject/black and white on it. Vol. 2 has Matt Johnson and the Gadgets "Gadget
Free" on it as well. If any one is interested in these tapes or anything let
me know and maybe i can find the address and number of the store when i get a
chance and email ya it....(or maybe these tapes are everywhere in the country
and i did not know about it) It is a really easy way to get most of the rare
material. One last thing....i just need the song Angel to complete my
colection of songs by the The...so if anyone has it, please let me know...:)
thanx...

Well, I haven't seen much traffic on here in a while. Must be finals week
everywhere else too. Anyway, this isn't about The The at all, rather another
artist to check out. It requires a bit of open-mindedness about musical
styles. The guy's name is Kris Kristofferson. You may know him as the guy
in the movie Convoy. His music is kind of folkish with a bit of a twinge of
country, but not too much. Like Matt, however, he has the ability to write
songs that are truly soul-searching and introspective. They fit right into
"songs for the lost, lonely, and lustful" like Dusk. Don't misinterpret me,
the music sounds nothing at all like The The, it just affects me in
the same way that The The does. Well, almost. Good stuff though. A good
album to try would be "Songs of Kristofferson" kind of a greatest hits kind
of thing. By the way, you know the song "Me and Bobby McGee" that Janis
Joplin sang? Well, Kristofferson wrote it, and performs it on this album.
So if you're in the mood for something a little different than you usually
listen to, give this a try. The CD is old enough that it's only like
$9.99 most places. I'd be interested to know if anybody else gives this a
try. Later...

It depends. New stuff is often listed at $14.99, but you can get it for
$12.99 or something like that. Then, after it has been out for a while, it
goes back up, to $14.99 or $15.99. Sometimes you can find 'em cheap,
though. Have seen Soul MIning (new) for $7.99.
=A315 is quite a bit more than that, isn't it?

Here in Lincoln, NE I pay about $15.00 if it's new and not on sale. However,
things are on sale pretty often. This is at the record stores. There is a
big electronics chain (Best Buy) which has a great CD department and they
sell them all for about $12 or $13. Being a college town, there's a great
used selection, and most places charge about $8 for used CDs.
