Hello the The Netizens...

I have a dream... the creation of thethe.org. I need your help.

I will create the thethe.org site.

I have a server and I have access to a T1.

But... I would *appreciate* it if the Infected community (and other
the The fans any of you might know) would donate a few
bucks to help pay for:

a) InterNIC fees for domain name registration ($50/year, paid 2 years
in advance)
b) ASCAP license, so the site could fully legally play RealAudio and
MPEG3 versions of all the The music. The ASCAP license as I
understand is a bit over $500 (per year) for smallish non-profits.
c) Any additional money would go toward buying a CD-ROM burner for
backups and for pressing the rare the The stuff that I and Dave
Kung spent much of today converting to MPEG3s.

I will do this, with or without help; but, I ain't rich, and the
rapidity with which I can do this stuff is determined by the funds I
have, which at present are enough to eat and live on, with
little left for luxuries. There is no attempt to make money here,
the site would be free from ads, and all webspace on it would be
free to anyone wanting to have their the The related site hosted.
All contributions would be disclosed (with name, unless the donor
would like it otherwise), so you'll know this is not about money.

The basic goals of the site will be:

o Promote the The.
o Disseminate information on the The.
o Centrally locate all the The information.

As part of this, one thing I think that would be wonderful would be
to place all the The related web pages on one server (if
the webmasters of the the The sites so desire. Each webmaster would
maintain full control over his/her site) so that fans (new and old)
would have easy access to all the major sources of the The
information. Mirrors would be set up and would thus mirror the
content of all the the The related sites on the server.

Blah, blah, blah.

You get the idea.

Of course, as if I have to say it, any help would be GREATLY
appreciated. I fear that this is one of those horrible
situations where a person asks for help, and everyone means well (and
maybe wishes to contribute), but for one reason and another, nobody
sends any money, and the whole thing sort of never goes as
far as it could have...

Ah well... we have our dreams...

Hey all out there in Infected-Land,
I need to pick your brains about Andy Johnson. For my art course I
must attempt (I stress the word "attempt") to do a self-portrait in the
style of another artist. I thought it would be really cool and original
if I took my influence from Andy Dog.
However, if I do my project in Andy Johnson style, I must provide some
information about him. Do any of you out there know anything about
Andy: birth date, art training, other works (aside from the The covers
if applicable), or just anything in general. I'd be eternally grateful
for this information. :)

Thanks,
skot

Well kids, my apologies for being gone soo very long. It is yet another sob
story in my ever clouded life. My system from work was changed to WARP (don't
even start with me, it was a corporate decision) and then I couldn't connect
anymore. Then I got my own system and started a cool web page and then my
system was stolen and I'm now fighting with insurance once again...

But I want to say it looked like someone actually missed me, IAN, I give you a
kiss ;<>

I too am eager for new thethe, but hey, good things take time. And with the
industry being so fickle. Tons of people lost jobs at labels recently and even
big names like REM are simply not selling. The industry is in a quandary and
so I can imagine that there is even more pressure, unspoken or not, for artists
to come up with a descent selling release.

In the meantime I'm amusing myself with MORCHEEBA (kicks Portishead's musically
butt (IMNSHO), Tricky, SPring Heel Jack, Moby, and other tidbits of Miles Davis
and John Coltrane.

And to some of you rough guys out there, take it easy on the people on this
list. GEESH, as if you never did ANYTHING WRONG or never irritated somebody.
I was reading the archived files from January through March. What a tough
crowd, lighten up, life is too short, live it now.

Okay enough for now, I'm just gonna watch what goes on and see how long I can
stay on this list because I'm using a work system and they don't like us
wasting time. Oh sure like corporations never wasted anyone's time???

Now you all know my real name because of my company email address. But I will

Greetings,

Well just wanted to introduce myself quickly. I just found Quincy's the The
homepage yesterday and I couldn't believe that there are that many devouted
MJ fans out here! Read (some) of the achives to see the variety (and
eccentricity) of the groups discussions too. Hope to talk relative as I
have been (it seems) the only MJ fan I've known for about 10 years now.

I suppose I'd just like to say we are all on this list because we

heard his music, but wouldn't the world be a boring place if we all had the

I'm glad (not for MJ's sales of his music of course!) that only a few of us

part of a group of people who have recognised and acknowledge Matt (and
theThe) for his talents. If he reads this I'd just like to thank him for

I'll stop now, cus I know how annoying it can be to read lots of waffle - I
hope Matt and theThe continue to produce his music for may years to come.

Hmmm, someone is feeling melancholy today or was that last night? dancing with
the devil eh?

well i for one, would never mind if matt came out with another effort or not.
the artist should drive the release process not the fans or the
labels or the state of the sorghum crop futures. now do i know reality?
yes...the consumer can drive the market somewhat, but primarily the labels
drive the industry.

anyhow, the efforts of matt to date are quite satisfying and if he were to say,
gosh golly folks, enough is enough and I'm sick of this rot. so be it. we
still have his other efforts.

remember he has been doing this music thang for quite awhile. the last time i
checked, I've had four different jobs within the same company during the last
two years. I've moved six times in the three years. how can anyone do the
same thing year after year?

and another thing, i have this theory on perfection. living in the ole US i
see the general public getting hit more with this superstar fan idolatry. it
really quit nauseating to see people care more about Michael Jordan than some
kid who gets blown away in a drive-by. bands, superjock, supermodels (uh,
don't even get me started, it would get bloody) and all of the people who are
flaunted daily in the public eye are just people. but everyone one in a while
they and one of us dirt hovering normal people can hit perfection. Perfection
is not a state of being or existence, it is a point on the curve. and
sometimes you can stay on the top of that curve, other times you'll go
tangentially off the curve and most of the time that perfection point lasts a
very short time. what america is guilty of is trying to prolong that
perfection time point to excessively and ridiculous length. you can't stay
there forever, you will come down.

so where does all this rambling go? the creative process is something that
necessarily happens for only a certain amount of time. and if you're luck
enough, you can experience that process and hit the perfection point more than
once in your life. so maybe if matt were never to release another set of
songs, we would actually benefit because we already have the best of his work
now. to try and prolong the creative process can in some cases destroy it
entirely.

geesh, you'd think i took philosophy classes or something, off to chew on a
bagel. yummmmm k-sharkless girl

Kayleigh:

I enjoyed your Rant.

It reminded me of a Rant I heard last night. I had some Margaritas with a
friend, and he was telling me about the differences between Absolutes and
Relatives, in a nutshell. The reason you reminded me of it is that you said
that every now and then one of us normal folks hits perfection.
Assume Perfection is Truth, God. God always seems to come to people in
Glimpses. Seems like it is Random. WE might think we Know God, but we don't.
And everyone who learns stuff knows that the more you learn, the more you
see that you don't know. It is Infinitely expanding, the truth is...like the
universe.
So, we cannot attain Absolute knowledge of the truth, or God. We cannot
attain that sort of Perfection.
WE CAN, however, Understand that we cannot know the Absolute truth, as it
forever careens out of our grasp. This Understanding is what can be Perfect.
(And I don't think any Supermodels are going to unload this kind of
perfection anytime soon, forgive my prejudice).

So, there is absolute Truth, and there is what we can, through our measly
yet Fantastic and beautiful senses, Understand, and there is a relationship
between them. The difference between the Truth, and what we Understand, is
GOD. God is that relationship. The relationship is always changing, becoming
every instant a fraction of what it was before. It is a Tumultuous
Relationship, God is.

God is Evil. God is Love. God is Beauty. God is Truth.

I didn't, with this rendition, come near the clarity that my pal had last
night. It was a terrific Rant. When he was done I slurred something to him
about MJ and The Violence of Truth. It made sense to me. The truth is
Relative. Just don't go into the Barn with it, cuz you'll end up with kids
with no teeth, sucking applesauce through a straw, all they wanna do is sit
on the porch and play banjo, pork farm animals...If'n you ain't the
Grandaddy of all liars! I told I'd shoot!

I think you are right on a lot of levels. One thing I notice that is
different in the American rock world vs. the British same, is that in
Britain bands can be huge hits one day and gone the next, where here we
DO want to prolong it. Of course that hasn't syopped British bands from
overproducing themselves to death.

Usually , it seems , when they run out of material they hire Todd
Rundgren or someone to make them sound like the Beatles, (Psch. Furs,
XTC).

I really appreciated Gang of Four, when they originally quit. When
asked why in NME, they said: "We ran out of Material" I thought that
was really honest and cool.

When he is ready he may do something. Hope he does, but I want it to
sound like him and NOT Todd Rundgren.

Hello -

Damn that stupid From Dusk till Dawn movie always makes me trip over
the the The video title, I'm always sure I write it wrong.

Anyway, as the Dusk to Dawn video is by all intents and
purposes totally unavailable commercially, the duplication of those
copies which do exist feels like a pardonable crime. And, as such,
and as I am (through another's kindness) to come into possession of a
copy of the video within the week, I wanted to find out who else
has been anxiously waiting/hoping to get a copy?

No money would be involved, you send me a video tape and a
self-addressed stamped sleeve-thing so I can send it back to you, and
voila... I will put the video on the tape. I'm a pretty
busy/disorganized guy, so if you don't send a self-addressed and
*all postage already bought and placed* sleeve thing, I'll
never send the video to you (not out of maliciousness, it's just
that I have a hard enough time just trying to buy and remember to put
stamps on bills, etc.)...

So e-mail me if you're interested, and I'll send you the
address to send your videotape. Sorry for the semi-complexity, but I
don't want to get involved in exchanges of $$$ and having to buy
videotapes and all...

Ok?

What the hell is this CRAP doing on a list???? Note the complete lack
of any identification on the web sight. Anyone who fills this out is
guaranteed to get one thing: junk mail, phone calls, and more spam.

This is bullshit and the prerson who posted it should be tossed off the
list. The domain it was posted from is a rougue domain that exists for
junk mail only, so complaints to the postmaster will probably not yield
much , but it doesn't hurt to send them mail anyway. Few spammers and
UCE'ers have the gall to do it on a mail list. Is there a moderator
somewhere here that can terminate this account?
Do they think that The The fans are dumber than the average netizen????

It isn't cool to UCE on mail lists.

The fact that they have the gall to sign onto a mail list to spam it,
earns them a little EXTRA attention. "Just use the delete button' is the
slogan of junk mailers everywhere. The only answer is an UNFREINDLY
place to do business. Lists should be particularly unfriendly.

My box is full enough of junk mail, not to have it hitch hiking in on
lists. If a list isn't worth some effort to protect it's subscribers
from this crap, then it isn't worth subbing to.

No, I don't think I WILL take it easy, when this particular camel
sticks it's nose into the list tent. It's easy to keep this junk OFF a
private list if people care. If they don't, then they will get the list
and the net that they deserve. One crawling with garbage from junk
mailers.

hello all,

[...]

there is no need to "sign on" (ie subscribe) to infected in order to
post something to it. any email directed to infected@cs.uchicago.edu
will be distributed to all subscribers, so anyone with email access
can do it (though only subscribers will receive the post).

> If a list isn't worth some effort to protect it's subscribers from

[...]

as infected is not a "moderated" mailing list (ie posts get
distrubuted *without* first being read/censored by a "moderator")
spams such as the amex mail can't be blocked. however, i believe the
advantages of such an unmoderated list outweigh its disadvantages.

finally, there's always the digest page, for those of you who would
rather read the posts once every few days at your leisure instead of
receiving them in your mailbox. point your web browser to

http://www.cs.uchicago.edu/~behfar/infected.archives.html

to access the archives organized by month (now including the current
month). of course you don't have to be subscribed to infected in order
to read the digests.

Aha! Thank you for clarifying this. I did not realize it was open to
non subscribers posting, so perhaps they just picked it up off a web
page.

I certainly can have more tolerance for that , then someone subbing and
milking a mail list. One of the reason I placed the tracer info there
and made a big deal about it was in the hopes that they would see it and
decide this was not a great place to spam their wares. (more than that
I was really so upset).

The person doing this is building a data base and most mail lists are
protected from this, (otherwise , people would sell mail list
addresses). This is why spammers are generally chased off mail lists,
ie so they do not set up the list as a conduit for continuing junk mail.
Pardon my dragon act. :>)

I agree about moderation for the most part, (don't care for it), as
long as list addresses are not widely accessable. I see more and more
music related spams, as this is an area mostly composed of younger
people who will not complain to postmasters, etc. (ie an excellant
target audience), and my abiding concern is that I do not want to be
added to a bunch of teenage target lists. I get enough junk as it is.

Also, people can discuss any damn thing they want and I could care
less, but I do actively fight to curtail the unsolicited commercial
stuff. Im old enough to remember what happened to CB radio and I care
enough about this medium that I will make it as unfriendly AS POSSIBLE
for junk mail. The reason it isn't worse than it is, is because people
take the time to make this a VERY unfriendly, and thus unprofitable
place to do this kind of business.

Considering how many spammers we get kicked off every week, if this
vigilence did not take place, usenet and shortly after that, most email,
would become unusable. For a look at what happens when spam is left
unchecked, see any of the alt. sex groups that have been completely over
run with ads and are useless. These are newsgroups that most spam
cancellers don't bother to clean up and serve as a good picture of why
this sort of corrective action is needed. We really DONT want the
government to do it for us.

The message is simple: Do this on the net and you can expect to be
hacked, mail bombed, turned into the IRS, and every other trick in the
book. Often a dramatic and nasty initial response, a about 5,000 nasty
complaints all at once, that take the server out, is enough to scare
these people off.

Thanks for the info,

Hello.

I've been trying to work out the final lyrics to Angels Of Deception, from
Infected, that begin with the line "Well, Oh .. God knows.." but I'm not
having much luck. They're not included in the lyric sheet I have. Can
anyone help?

Also I have only recently managed to get Burning Blue Soul (rare here in
New Zealand) and I'm totally in awe of it (if only I'd heard it when I was
sixteen when it would have changed my life!). The thing I find amazing
about the songwriting is that it sounds so close to 'stream of
consciousness' writing, like the songs were written very quickly and
partly improvised, but at the same time there's none of the
pretentiousness you usually find with that kind of stuff (ala Van Morrison)
- -- especially for a goddamn teenager. I don't really know much background
on the album. Can anyone provide some insight into how the album was
written, or point me towards a good source?
Thanks very much.

not to burst your bubble, but i know for sure "love is stronger than
death" does not appear on either of the two romeo and juliet
soundtracks, and i can assure you that it doesn't appear in the film
either. I have seen the film twice, and any the the would have
jumped out at me. i'm sure it was just some editing done
independently by mtv. also, i know that the the has a song on the
judge dredd soundtrack that doesn't appear on any of their albums, as
well as "that was the day" on the threesome soundtrack. at the end
of the movie empire records, they play "that was the day", but it
doesn't appear on the soundtrack. does anyone know of any other
movie appearances from matt? i've heard that in an old brad pitt
movie (pre-stardom) that i can't recall the name of, there is a the
the poster hanging in a room, but i'm yet to see the movie.

on an entirely unrelated note, i''ve heard matt was the first ever

infected was released. i'm just curious if anyone has seen this
episode and what they have to say about it, or even if someone has it

Apparently love wasn't stronger than death for Romeo and Juliet cause they dead
now...or were dead...or still are very dead. I guess it all just depends on
your degree of deadness acknowledgement.

I think the song use was out of context considering from what I know, the song
was written about Matt's brother who died. To me the song says, people die but
the connection you may have to them will live on in your love for that person.
Because Romeo and Juliet decided that dying together was better than living, I
really have to take issue with the use of the song.

Geesh, you'd think some people have nothing better to do than criticize...well
I do, but I manage to find time for a lot of things. SEEYA.

They may be using Love is Stronger Than Death for promoting the movie, but
I'm almost dead certain its not in the movie. I happened to see the movie
twice, and I'm sure that I would have noticed a The The song.

This is interesting. I think this tune has a very powerful message also, but
for me it has more to do with interconnectedness and how we are spiritually
and physically continuously reborn.

Anybody else think the answer to the meaning of Love is Stronger... is

It has always reminded me of John Lennon, in vocal, and instrumental
style and in words. Lennon was a big influence here, and this could
sure pass for one of his songs.

Could there have been some intenetion of tribute here?

Subject: Matt's Whereabouts Anyone

Good Morning Beautiful,

As a London based The The fan - I may be able to answer some of your
questions about MJ's home.

Matt Johnson's UK headquarters, he still has a London HQ by the way, is
in Shoreditch EC2. I have the address (he hires out his studio, which I
have links with...you can see it in the Dog's of Lust/From Dusk til Dawn
video), but out of respect to the man I would not like to be responsible
for a parade of nutters at his door by disclosing it. It is an old
retail clothing shop, late victorian vintage, on a highstreet. He does
seem to spend a lot of time in NY these days but I did spot the man in
Aldgate East last summer with Fiona Skinner.

The Two Puddings in Stratford is still around (bit of a rough pub
though).

I have no idea of what interest the above may be to anyone but, I do
care.

Love,

Andrew

P.S. I think that Matt Johnson is a pure Brit but, in recent years, his
work has been better appreciated on the either side of the pond.

In response to a note I got from Dougcha on the Matt's brother dying issue:

The info I got was from an interview I did with Matt on the theTHe Mind Bomb
tour. In fact that was why the tour was postponed. At first the message was
that Johnny Marr's brother died, I have no idea if Johnny has a brother or
not. But that was the message my assistant left. So I called my CBS contact
and they confirmed that it was Matt's brother who died.

If my feeble mind remembers, I thought the brother's name was Eugene. Hell, i
don't know. Who out there has the specifics? Come on, I know you're out
there. Help me out here with a little information. Thanks from an old lady...

Hello -

Just wanted to say again how nice it was to have seen so many of
you at the Northeast Regional the The Conference and Trade Show.

For those of you who couldn't make it, I've posted some of the
info about the event and the trades that were made at:

http://bcx.ind.wpi.edu/the_The/NERConf/

Again, great seeing you there, let's do it again!

Perhaps next year we can merge the Northeast and the Western
the The Conference and Trade Show organizations together for an even
bigger blow-out.

I really was amazed by Matt's suprise visit and his cooking
demonstration on Sunday Morning! He really is a regular guy! And I got
a taste of his special breakfast crepes....NOT BAD! (it always pays to
sit in the front, guys!) Cant wait for the next regional! Maybe we can
get him to do his famous Beef Wellington!

I understand that he can't perform , due to his legal agreements, but
maybe somebody ought to have an accoustic ax around just in case he gets
plyable again.

How many glasses of bubbely DID he put down while doing the demo,
anyway? Do you BELEIVE some of those stories he told?????

Twas fun! Too bad more people couldn't have made it...next year...

Well, I don't know about regular guy. I don't think too many
"regular guys" would cook up eggs with so much angst and crepes
with so much contemplation...

This really sort of ticked me off. I don't think Sony would
have had anything to say if Matt had just sung us a few bars of
something. Even singing amazing grace or something before supper
would have been enough for me. But nothing, I don't know, that hurt.

> Twas fun! Too bad more people couldn't have made it...next year...

I just checked and the Fleet Center in Boston is available for next
year's New England get together. I think this will work out
much better. It can hold upwards of 25,000 people, so we won't be
nearly as cramped as we were this year.

Can we merge the Southeast the The Conference also. There are a few of us Southern boys who didn't make it to the Northeast Regional this year, but
would very much like to bring a few items to the trade show next year.

Hmm, I thought it was in fact his father that died (whose name was
Eugene). If you look in the credits for 'Dusk', it is dedicated to
"Eugene Johnson & Josiah Ferdinando". I could confirm that Eugene was
his father, but all my Matt Johnson/The The magazine articles and other

I met Matt on the Mind Bomb tour, and can say that I heard just before that
he was traumatized by the death of his brother, Eugene...As I recall, indeed
MJ was bummed...although that may have benn from the thought of meeting a
little fucking punk like me.

I have a the The lyrical question.

At the beginning of a long version of Gravitate To Me, Matt says something
like, "Hey ??????, what the fucking hell do you think you're doing, ?????".
Fill in the question marks, and I'll give you peace. I am certain the first
unidentifiable word is the same as the second. Undecipher one, and get the
second free! The voice is drenched in effect, similar to the effect at the
top of "Helpline Operator" on Dusk, where Matt says, apparently to Bruce
Lampcov, "Bring the bass down a little....yeah, that's good".

I am certain Matt loads these bits in effects so we can drool just That much
more when we listen to theThe over the din of our Brains sizzling on
Hallucinogenics.

Hi All

Does anyone know exactly when Flesh & Bones first appeared (and where) and
when Matt wrote it ?

I think it fits to the "Soul Mining" days.

thanks,

Ran

the song first appeared on a some bizarre records compilation called "if
you can't please yourself, you can't please your soul," from 1985. flesh
and bones is credited as:
thin jim thirwell -- marimbas
matt johnson -- instruments and vocals.
produced -- matt johnson/paul hardiman
composed -- matt johnson
recorded february 1984.

this compilation also has marc almond (with jim "foetus" thirwell) and
scraping foetus off the wheel. and a beautiful painting by andy dog that
is not in the infected book.

..there exists a 7" 1-sided uk promo (with no pic sleeve) that was issued in
'85 as well (# some bizzare matt 1)..possibly intended as a single??..this
pre-dates the compilation appearance, i believe..

hi all out there -

pretty new myself to the infected list, so i apologize in advance for
crass trainspotterism/roads already travelled...

i'm desperately searching for copies of mr. johnson's earlier tracks
(y'know, the ones that you gotta have many $$$ to get ahold of these
days), specifically (looking for tape copies here, not originals):

black & white/controversial subject
dumb as death's head
absolute liberation
leap into the wind
screw up yr feelings

...or any subset of the above (also greatly innarested in the "gun
sluts demos" tape that seems to be floating around)...in trade for any of
the above i offer a copy of a fine the The live show, recorded at the
marquee in london on march 10, 1982. it's a really neat tape and although
it's an audience walkman recording it sounds pretty o.k. includes songs
like giant, another boy drowning, this is the day, icing up, controversial
subject etc. as a bonus, he plays a tune called "hit me where it really
hurts" (his title), which as far as i know has not been seen elsewhere.
you also get to hear him shout "oh bloody hell!!!" (seems like his
equipment was breaking down at this point)...whatta deal.

anyway, please email me privately (rorshach@execpc.com) if we can help
each other out on this one.

regards,
doug

This may be the most terribly organized site I have ever seen.
if any one can figure out how to get a searchable index, please do let me know.
Otherwise, while I may want to participate, with no search function and no
text choices, someone like me (14.4, slow over AppleTalk Remote Access),
has no chance.

thanks,

dave
