Hello -
Just wanted to let everyone know that I have updated my the The web
page:
http://bcx.ind.wpi.edu/the_The
The most significant addition is in the form of full-length RealAudio
files for all the the The songs (well, I think I have about 2/3 of
them so far, but the rest are coming).
Anyways, that's about it. If anybody wants to see anything added,
let me know. I'll do my best to add it.
[For those of you familiar with Real Audio, I'm not using a Real Audio
server (I think they're selling for $400 now, ouch), so you're going
to have to wait until the entire file downloads before its going to
play (without the Real Audio server it can't play the audio as it
downloads).]
Take care...

I forgot to ask everybody's opinion on something in my last e-mail...
Is it "the The" or "The The"? I always used to write it "The The"
but then about 6 months ago I started writing it "the The" (I'm not
sure why I changed). I guess if you read it right from the old
graphic:
- ----- the
| | _
| |-| |_
| | | |_
you might be inclined to think it is "the The" or even "The the",
certainly not "The The"... but then again... in my brief contact
with Matt Johnson, he signed my license plate "The The"... and he
should know, if anyone. But maybe he was in a hurry and it was a
typo (ok, very unlikely)... On this revision of my web pages I wrote
it as "the The"... again, I'm not quite why, I probably should have
left it as "The The".
Any opinions? I keep seeing people do it both ways (well, generally
not the same people)?

Sorry to continue,
I think the songs are in Matts head both lyrically and musically
before they go into the Studio. But I think the reason it takes
such a long time in the studio (for the The) is that at that point it
becomes a collective organic process.

Nothing. If "YOU" are on here or anyone remembers who it was...please help!
Also, I found a second copy of the Gadget's BLUE album.
That's the Matt stuff before the The.
I would be willing to give it to anyone AT COST if they are interested.

Hello there everyone...
You know, I was just thinking there (such a process is quite a novelty for
me) about Matt and Johnny Marr. Take for instance Mind Bomb, where only one
song is credited to Johnson/Marr. What does this REALLY mean.
Does it mean that Johnny had little influence in the writing of the album as
a whole and merely carried out instructions from Matt as regards what to
play. Or does it mean that Matt gave hime the bones of the tunes and Johnny
then built on that.
So what I'm really saying is this; what does one have to do to get a
creditation in the composition of a song? (particularly in the case of the The)
Any ideas??
Regards,
Carl

Everything I've read suggests that Johnny Marrs interests are
purely musical. In both the Smiths and the The he is an avid student
of all styles of popular music and the pop song itself. I know that he was
quoted as saying one of the reason he was happy the Smiths had broken up was
that he had felt there was no room for him to grow musically.
He also had said that he wanted to play with more funky rifs.
That is not to say that he is not an expert at conveying the
theme of the lyrics through his playing though. His playing
on Mind Bomb made the album for me. Especially "Gravitate to Me,"
which I believe to be one of the best pieces I have heard that
combine elements of Blues/Funk/Rock and Jazz. I also believe he
helped with the incredible Blues Harp on both Dusk and Mind Bomb. I don't
believe even he sees himself as a lyricist. It's too bad as the
new Electronic album is a great piece of music the lyric really
fall short

FIRST: Has anyone composed any MIDI files for the The songs?
I can hardly believe I'm even asking - although MIDIs most often sound
like elevator music - it IS possible to get some get some almost
realistic sounding renditions. It takes some serious time & talent.
Years back I had a college roommate who regularly tortured us with
electronic renditions of Stairway To Heaven, ELP 'hits', Freebird and
Star Wars which he would blast on our communal stereo which he had
hooked to his TRS-80 & synthesizer. Yes, a MIDI version of Helpline
Operator would probably make all of ill. Don't anyone even suggest
Karaoke! Before you label me a "blasphemer" or "geek", think about the
ability to MIX YOUR OWN VERSIONS, swap instruments or isolate specific
tracks... It might actually work well on the heavy-synth stuff on
Soul Mining and Infected. The "Infected 1979 - '87" book of sheet
music might help to get started... Anyone want to give it a go?
No, I'm NOT volunteering.
SECOND: Has anyone made any the The themes for Windows 95 which they
are particularly proud of?
If you're not familiar with Themes, they are a bundled package of
wallpaper, system sounds, icons, etc. which can be installed as a
group. Have any of you Mac people done anything similar?
I've started searching and sampling for appropriate riffs and sound
bites- but I haven't been real pleased with my progress to date. I do
really like using that wonderful electronic scream from Red Cinders In
The Sand as my startup sound (one of my all time favorite The The
sound bites)-- 100 times better than anything from Microsoft.
We speak often on this list about lyrics (rightly so), how about the
sounds? Anyone have any favorites and why?

Dolphins has been done and redone a few times. I remember i was convinced
Billy Bragg wrote it cause it was on the album "Dont try this at home."
Somehow it seems great artists love this song :)

Dead Can Dance is a very unique band. It's a guy and a girl (Brendan &
Lisa) and their style of music ranges from mellow gothic to medieval to
celtic to tribal polyrhythmic stuff. I saw them perform at the Keswick
Theater in Philadelphia about three months ago and they played "Dolphins."
Brendan play it on acoustic guitar and sang (his voice is great), and I
think there were some percussionists, etc playing in the background. For
their tours, the use about six extra musicians, mostly playing old celtic
instruments or various percussions.
Sorry, this whole message already sounds like I work for the 4AD
marketing department , but DCD's latest album is _Spiritchaser_ and
they have a somewhat current Best Of set on Rykodisc called _A Passage in
Time_.

Billy Bragg also covered the song "Dolphins" -- with much less
musical prowess as Matt, but still good none-the-less. I believe the tune
was on his "Don't Try This At Home" album.
In other (but similar) news -- Johnny Marr and James Eller also
helped Billy Bragg out with the song Sexuality. I know they both
helped Billy play the song, but I'm not too sure how much input they had
into the writing of it. I don't know how Billy Bragg does it, bet he also
managed to land Micheal Stipe (R.E.M.) and Kirsty MacCall (sung with the
Pogues on "Fairytale on New York") to do backing vocals on a couple of
songs on the album as well. Not too shabby!
