Hello -

I had an idea a while ago. It's not a terribly dramatic idea, but I think
it just might work, and I'd like to get some comments. I'm planning on
implementing it.

Everything has contexts, and necessity invents, etc. so I'll try and
explain this in as simple and logical a way as possible. Most of us like
old The The stuff. Most of us would probably be interested in owning more
genuine (not copies or) rare stuff if we could just find it. I tried to
set up a discussion forum to meet somewhat of this need, but activity has
been slim and that's not surprising, since there is little motivation for
people to use it. So, what about we make this a little more capitalistic,
and use commerce (to some degree) to fuel this thing.

Here's what I was imagining. I just moved to London (anyone on the list
in/near London? I could really use some friends/co-conspirators. Any
offers? E-mail me directly). I've been hitting the record shops of late,
and in one day and in 3 stores I found some 25 or so used The The records,
everything from the pretty common to the slightly uncommon (nothing
radically rare, that I could tell). The point is this. I'm sure there are
a lot of you out there that would probably like access to the stuff I could
just stroll down the street and get. And I have only hit a few shops in
one area of town. If I spent a few weekends scouring, I'm sure I could
come up with quite a nice inventory. I could either plunk down the money
for them as an investment assuming I'd be able to re-sell them to other
fans, or simply make a note of what was available and where and if someone
says they want it, I can contact the place to see if it's still available.
Now the point is, of course, that... if we could get just a few
semi-dedicated fans from the list members to do this in their own towns,
we'd have quite a large database of available The The records (and posters,
whatever, etc.); a far larger collection than is available anywhere
on-line. Now here's where the capitalism comes in. I would be set up to
accept credit card transactions. So, person A would come to the database,
find something they wanted that volunteer vendor B had entered, and once
availability is confirmed, they'd pay for it on-line on my site. It would
then get shipped by volunteer vendor and he/she would get a check from me.
I'd take a commission of some sort to cover costs.

Now, there are a few issues:

o how do you ship records cheaply without them getting broken/damaged?
o how much should volunteer vendors mark up the records? (and more
importantly almost, can they get a discount
from the used record store since they're going to resell, I think many
would give some sort of discount if you were
buying their whole The The section, but probably not if you were just
buying one)
o how do we know that the volunteer vendor will handle the shipment in a
timely fashion?
o how do we deal with damaged goods, returns, poorer than expected quality,
etc.
o etc.

There are many issues, obviously. I can set up the infrastructure, the
database, the search clients, the registration clients, the payment
clients, all that. I don't want to drown in a sea of shipping cartons.

It might even make sense if we tried to centralize things, where all
shipping would be done through one or two people, and volunteer vendors
would just ship their inventory to them, basically "on commission" (no
money until sold). So, create a "warehouse" somewhere with someone. Of
course that would basically double shipping costs (since the stuff was
being shipped twice), which could rapidly become the greatest obstacle to
keeping the prices low.

Comments? Questions? Ideas?

I think this idea could work, but it's certainly fraught with obstacles.

(An un-related and more exciting post to follow, but please do give me some
feedback on this.)

Hi there:

Interesting Idea, but I will bring up some possible snafus. These are
just every possible objection, and go ahead and shoot them down. I dont
think its a bad idea. Im being OVER critical in an effort to help. OK?

I have recently purchased and sent a friend in the UK some very simple
computer related things, ( a Mouse, a game, a mother board) and its been
a bit tricky re: customes THERE in the UK. Sometimes things go through
as GIFTS and sometimes they land in the deep hole of Calcutta. It seems
very serendipitous. US customs seems to care LESS, but our PO is
...well, NOT as good as yours, probably! HA!

I am wondering if you do this through a credit card transaction, etc
if it is going to be a bit more difficult to declare this as a "gift"
etc. And also whatever special things the UK may have as to "exporting"
records as I do believe they have some unusual rules about artistic
property, etc, I have known some record importers here and the Uk always
seems especially difficult and inconsistant as to assigning "VALUE" in
this regard.

Also , unless you have some special "IN" with a credit card service,
that sure isnt free. It can add up to 10% to the cost (or MORE!) of the
transaction here, and you leave a paper trail for nasty things like
TAX. The smaller you are, the more you pay. Maybe you already have
that for some other business and it isnt a problem, but if you dont, Id
check the prices first. I think you will find that the CC company takes
any possible profit right out of your hands.

Also, What I personally would worry about, is that by making it so
formal you are essecntially setting up an "import /export business" and
all the stuff that entails and there probably isnt enough volume or
profit to make the paperwork, fund exchange, declarations, and shipping
pay off.

Twere it me, and I had the capital, I'd assemble a list of people and
their interests, (a mail list) and go ahead and pick up what you think
they want, and then see if you can even sustain a surcharge on TOP of
shipping. They will have to get you funds in some form you can use. My
friends sends me US currency from the Uk, and there are international
money orders, etc. THEN you can simply ship in the usual way as a
"gift", without waking up any beaurocratic sleeping giants.

If you already have a credit card service or something like this set
UP, and you want to go ahead with your plan, one thing positive about
moving things here in bigger bulk, and THEN re-distributing it for the
US, is that you can get quite a bit of weight (up to a lb) anywhere in
the US for 3.00, priority mail, (1-3 days), and no customs etc. So it
might be worth sending over a batch, getting it through customs (if you
HAVE to, you may even be able to do THAT as a "gift" if it isnt all that
much or that often), and then having it redistributed here. The
customer making the purchase wouldnt have as many worries about when or
how it would take to get here, and you might actually make more money in
the long run using bulk postage, crossing the pond.

I Do know from old friends at Rough Trade SF, that customs can get
very WIERD about old records, not knowing how much they are really
WORTH, (and assigning much higher values to them then they really HAVE),
etc. Ive had records shipped to me from Uk friends that took two months
to get here, and some never showed up at all.

My advice is to keep it as folksy and simple as possible. Have one
reliable distributor here, and you guys swap batches and create a
"vault". Tack on the domestic shipping as an extra charge and absorb
the overseas, as part of your mark up, but dont get "customers" caught
up in the "import/export", "customs", "maybe get there, maybe dont get
there", angle of it. It wont be worth your while to track all of that,
but our respective governments will probably stupidly decide that it IS,
and the credit card companies will provide a nice paper trail for them!

Lea

PS The The records might get magically erased after too much exposure
to "red tape'. Who knows? :>)

this is mostly to Robert and im only sending it via the list in case
anyone else might be following, and find this interesting. It doesnt
have anything to do with when The The will release a new record. Sorry.
No need to have any "unsubscribe fits".
I highly doubt it will go much further via the list. So delete or
read as will.

Robert Writes;

> the theory of religion was written by Georges Bataille as an exploration
> of the requirements for a religion of thought. It creates more trouble
> than it's worth for quite a few christians; for it explains the
> objectization of animals.

There was also a book, released about 10 years ago that dealt with the
history of Christian Europe, the Middle Ages, and Animals. Im sorry I
forget the name, but a good library card catalog search under "middle
ages, and Animals , or Animals and history Of, would no doubt turn it
up. The author is female, and it got pretty good reviews in the later
80's.

It was really fascinating and explored how the whole Christian world,
seperated themselves to such a degree from Nature, that it created this
rather unhealthy attitude, we still have today, in so many apparent
ways. (as one can see by the way we manage our resources, etc). The idea
of 'stewardship" was pretty much thrown out the window by the very very
early centuries, if it ever was embraced. Only "pagans and heathens"
believed that animals had any soul or that man WAS an animal, much less
part of nature. That was truley a blasphemous thought and still IS to
Some. And it pegs this, not so much on any teachings of Christ as much
as an artifact of mideivil European thought in general, absorbing what
it wanted of Christianity and rejecting the rest, in an assent to
political power. If you are setting yourself up as supreme arbitrator
of things "divine" (ie The Church and its leaders) surely you can not
see animals or nature as having ANY ranking. The peasants need
SOMETHING to look down on! The book follows this schitzy view of "man
as seperate from nature" (ala Krishnamurti, whom you might also find
interesting, but much more readable to me), up to the present. But the
question would be, is this really a Christian inspired ANYTHING, or just
supreme childish arrogance that followed the "Christian" political
takeover, throughout Europe.

I say this in response to :

> It creates more trouble
> than it's worth for quite a few christians; for it explains the
> objectization of animals.

I dont find it too troublesome a concept, as I dont think it had much
to do with anything Christ was saying at all.

One of the bigger "entertainments" of the dark ages was to take a
living beast and torture it in the town square for as long as possible.
This was considered : "good fun". Sometimes, of course, people were
used as well, and this didnt seem to conflict with the Christian "motif"
of the time.
It was a smaller jump then to assume then, that "the Church" and its
selected leaders, had divine power over MAN and that "grace" could be
purchased and dispensed at whim, or removed completely (ie: Torture is
good for the soul), for whatever pogrom they had in mind at the moment.

Thanks for the mention of this book. I will check it out, and you
might enjoy this one.

Lea

PS.
The catholic Church here holds an anual "blessing of pets". You can
take any animal and get it blessed on that day. (its a hoot as people
line up with their dogs , cats and lizards - this is after all the
city of St. Francis). I have no idea how far this goes back, but I dont
THINK it is a very old tradition and seems like one of the ways that
this church is trying to modernize it's views, or maybe even ATONE?

We now return you to speculation about The The albums, and favorite
songs.........

I looked this up, had a lawyer friend help:

(to paraphrase) if someone copies and distributes copyrighted material for
financial advantage, willfully or not willfully, they are subject to one
year in prison and a big fine. this is a criminal offense.

if someone copies and distributes copyrighted material without financial
gain, they can only be sued for damages that must be proven by the
plaintiff. Actual damages can be sued for (max. $200 each violation &
att. fees) if the distribution is not willfull, but willfull distribution
can be sued for statutory damages ($500-20,000 each violation), which
again, must be proved by the plaintiff.

Let me elaborate.
I really want to share rare the The music that I've worked very hard to
collect and master with other fans that cannot locate this music. If the
only way to get Dumb as Death's Head is on the 7" vinyl that Joe Shmoe
has, what is illegal about sharing it with other fans. Other people have
tried this before and I'm trying now.

The only probelm I forsee is the slight possibility of re-release of
certain music by Sony. Who knows, maybe they will make a new collection
or remix b-sides/EPs. In that case, they woul have a case against anyone
who did create such a compilation themselves. For example, if I were to
make a CD set with 24 tracks of virtually unavailable the The music and
sell it fo COST, Sony could only recoup from me (assuming a win in civil
court), the profit they would have made for the number of copies that I
distributed. Say I made 20 CD's containing a total of 240 tracks, the most
Sony could hope to get from me is an order to stop and the profit they
would have made selling each of those individual tracks (240 X $5 profit
for each track = $1200). But they would have to prove it. Easier said
than done, show me where to buy POD. A lot of those tracks are hidden on
EP's and b-sides- alsomt impossible to walk into a store and buy them all.
Especially in the US. (Sorry overseas people, I couldn't make any copies
for you- international copyright laws would land me in jail for years for
sending a single CD out of the US.- You'll have to find friends on the
list who are willing to make a copy of their copy and mail it to you as a
gift.)

That's what I think and I'd like your support. Depending on what replies
I get, I will supply this you with a list of tracks that are poorly
mastered or I would require better copies of. That way, we can all trade
and share music with one another that we normally would not ever be able
to get...

Let me know what you all think- I'm really serious about this. Why can't
we enjoy this music and share it without getting greedy. A two-CD set of
Rare and POD tracks would be $3.20 & shipping, pretty damn cheap if you
ask me.

Bear in mind that this might take a few months- we have to assemble
tracks, agree on a track list and then actually burn and test and send
stuff out. It will be a rewarding journey if we can carry it out.

Waiting for Sony to jump up my ass,
~jwh

Hello -

This e-mail contains information about Matt, the band, the status of all
things record/tour-ish, and some exciting news about this site.

- ----

I've been sitting on some rather exciting news, waiting for just the right
moment to pass it along... and I'm not sure if this is the right moment,
but, it is a moment, and I write.

If you're the type who just wants the headlines, tough. No headlines here.
In general, in the future, headlines, right here, right now, nope. You've
just got to read the whole e-mail message.

- -

My web site, thethe.com, is now the **OFFICIAL** The The web site (for the
upcoming album, tour, and into perpetuity). (Notice, I wrote "The The"
instead of "the The" as I did in the past. Matt says it is intended to be
written as "The The", so if y'all want to be in accordance with his
intentions/wishes, that's how the capitalization works (when not done in
the logo, of course). I've still got to go through the site and change all
that.) Having said that, I met with Matt and management about two weeks
ago in NYC to talk about the site; numerous changes/additions/etc. are
planned.

(The site switched hosts a few days ago, and I think I've got all the old
stuff back up and running, if you have any problems tell me. Expect
exciting things to happen with the site in the relatively near future (on
the order of weeks/months).)

So, the site becomes official, what does this mean to you? Quite a lot.
Mostly it means that I have access to Matt, the band, and the management;
and that means that by proxy, that you have access to Matt, the band, and
the management. There are limits of course. Don't send me e-mails saying,
"please tell Matt" because I won't. Basically, if there's news, and they
want it divulged, I'll get it up on the site, and e-mailed out to you quite
quickly. I will try my best to be as efficient and response a bridge
between the fans and The The as possible.
Is the site now going to be a commercial vehicle? Only appropriately so.
There will be a storefront on the site where you'll be able to purchase The
The CDs, videos, posters, shirts, etc. The The concert tickets will also
be available through the site. There will be other things like free
give-aways of CDs, concert tickets, etc. as well. So, yes, there will be
some commerce, but no it should in no way adversely affect the site, it
will just be an addition to the site.

A list of some other things planned for the site (other than a radical
face-lift) (note: these items subject to change):

o RealPlayer video and audio interviews with Matt, the band, former members
of the band, production people, etc.
o Rare audio clips, rare photos, some of Matt's unreleased handwritten
music/tablature/lyrics/etc.
o Occasional Q&A with the band.
o Occasional chat room stuff with the band and/or production/manager types.
o Sanctioned (and probably mildly regulated) bootleg trading forums.
o E-mail addresses so that you can write to Matt, and the band, and the
managers (note: of course,
just because you write does not mean they will respond. The chances they
would are very, very low).
But, they will be give the e-mail.

o your_user_name@thethe.net and your_web_site.thethe.net Internet
presences at reasonable prices
o and much, much more...

But, wait, there's more... Just by reading this far into the e-mail, I
will offer you not one, not two, but three juicy bits of news! Sort of.

First, the new album is done. It really, truly, honestly exists. How do I
know? Because I listen to it every day as I walk the streets of London, to
and from work, and around town. It is phenomenal. I wish I could hum a
few bars for you, or something. But, I can't. I can't even reveal much
about it. The title of the album is still unstable. There is a working
title, and it will probably stay the same into production, but because it
may not they didn't want me revealing it. Sorry. I am trying to convince
them to let me put a clip or clips from the new album on the site. They
are thinking about it, and will probably agree.

I doubt I'm the ideal person to adequately convey whatever it is the album
is to anyone else. All I can think to say is that as I've walked these
streets of London in these past couple weeks, and wrestled with the welcome
and unwelcome aspects of change and society and time and love (and lack
thereof) and loss and all of that, no better companion could I have had
than this album. It has been my constant companion and consoler. It has
given my steps a cadence and my heart/mind some solace. To my ears, it is
mostly a continuance along the lines of Dusk, and Lip Tripping, the
Darkness Falls. Emotions are difficult to remember long past, so I think
I remember how much I loved Dusk and I believe I love this album quite a
bit more.
I am also working on getting a short interviewish clip of Matt talking
about this new album. I was supposed to meet up with him in London last
week, but much to my dismay, schedules didn't allow it to be.

And, now for the bad news. Marketing and such issues outside of The The's
control have pushed the release/tour date back yet again. First quarter
1999 is the new expectation. It's no longer an issue of the album being
done, that's all set, it's just to do with placement in distribution
queues, and contracts, and such.

Also, Matt intends on doing a re-release of Pornography of Despair. He
told me that he has all the material for it. And is probably going to work
on that project following the tour. Also, he plans to release a box set
with many previous B-sides and unreleased tracks; no specific time table
for that.

And now for some personal impressions of the whole meeting Matt Johnson
thing. It was absolutely fantastic. Having met him before only in fan
settings (trying to get his autograph on my license plate, trying to get a
photo with him and my license plate) I had no real knowledge of who he was
as a person. I rather expected that he would have an ego and that it would
eclipse any ability to communicate with him or enjoy his company on a
normal level. I was shocked to discover that Matt was utterly charming and
engaging and funny and intriguing and nice; he even flagged down taxis for
me. And, one thing that truly amazed me was that he remembered signing my
license plate back in 1993. And even more amazing than that, he remembered
the fragment of poem I'd sent him backstage "The Man on the Dump" by
Wallace Stevens which ends with "Where was it one first heard of the truth?
The the." and he even kept that fragment of poem even coming across it
recently going through some papers. And at the time of the meeting he
didn't even know it was I that had sent that to him. So, the moral of all
this is that... the butterfly flapping its wings in the Pacific can cause
an Atlantic hurricane. We can make a difference to/impact on/etc. those we
never would have thought we could, and though that alteration in them be
small, we exist in those subtle alterations/impressions made to/upon
others. The secret for the butterfly is knowing which flap makes the
difference. Or putting itself in the right position to not need to know,
where all of its flaps count for something. Or soitseemstomejustnow.

[snip]
My web site, thethe.com, is now the **OFFICIAL** The The web site (for the
upcoming album, tour, and into perpetuity).

[snip]
Basically, if there's news, and they
want it divulged, I'll get it up on the site, and e-mailed out to you quite
quickly. I will try my best to be as efficient and response a bridge
between the fans and The The as possible.

[snip]

But, they will be give the e-mail.
o your_user_name@thethe.net and your_web_site.thethe.net Internet presences
at reasonable prices
o and much, much more...

[snip]

I remember how much I loved Dusk and I believe I love this album quite a
bit more.

[snip]

And, now for the bad news. Marketing and such issues outside of The The's
control have pushed the release/tour date back yet again. First quarter
1999 is the new expectation. It's no longer an issue of the album being
done, that's all set, it's just to do with placement in distribution
queues, and contracts, and such.

Bravo Quincy!

You have put So much work and effort into that site, Im really happy
you were able to meet Matt and become the official site, instead of some
Sony thing, or record mall, etc!

It says the band and its management have their heads on straight and
are extending the recognition you deserve. I hope you personally get a
lot out of this, whatever it is you need or want. I also hope you
maintain the control you have had, or that it is a pleasant co-operative
thing. With this band it surely will be, if its possible. If anyone
could make the business part of it be righteous it would be him, I
think.

Im also not suprised that you found Mr. Johnson to be just the person
you hoped. I think his music is a very good window to his soul. He's a
smart fellow, a good guy, and I would expect him to be a charming soul.
(Yes, Quincy, there IS a Matt johnson! ") LOL!

CONGRATS and THANKS for all your efforts!

Hello folks,

Let me say that I am very amazed at the support I've seen. Many have
tried and many have failed. I have nothing better to do, so in theory, I
can't fail due to any internal cause.

Again, let me thank you all for your efforts to contribute. Let me lay
down a few rules right now so that I can get everything straightened out
later:

1) Anything you are willing to contribute, I'll accept. Please don't mail
your original copies of anything to me without talking to me directly
beforehand, I don't want anyone's belongings destroyed in the mail. If
you wish to send me something, please send a copy. If you have access to
a CD burner, please make a digital copy. If you are going to contribute
in MP3 format, I'd rather you put the MP3(s) on a CD and mail it to me
rather than putting it on the internet. Please do not email me any Mp3s
without letting me know in advance so that I can arrange the space to be
there on my account when they arrive. (I'll give you ftp access directly
to my ISP account without having to attach them to email).

2) I want it to be clear that I will not be making any money on this
project. It's not going to be a buy a the The album and sell it through
such-and-such a website for profit of the website. I want this to be a
free sharing of the The's hard-to-acquire music out of pure love for the
band.

3) If anybody tries to take legal action against me, I already have a
lawyer. I'm ready for anything at this point- I just want to get this
compilation out as soon as possible (one-two months), to avoid any
unnessecary legal issues.

4) I will email you directly if you have contacted me about this project.
I will use the list for as little as possible, again to avoid any legal
issues. If I don not email you back within 5 days, email me again because
I probably deleted your message by accident.

5) If you are ready to send anything for inclusion into the compilation,
please send it to this address:

jwh
522 E. Drachman St.
Tuscon, AZ 85705
USA

Should you need to speak with me personally, my telephone number is
520.903.2399.

Please, no prank calls. I screen every incoming call- just know that.

6) If you have any questions, or you are interested in knowing more about
the compilation or would eventually be interested in a copy, just email me
a quick note and I'll hang on to it. Brevity is golden when you receive
100 emails a day.

Thank you all again for your support- together we can make a kickass
compliation so that every 'newbie' can really experience the music that we
love so much.

Bless you people,

~jwh

Hello -

A few little tid bits to pass along. In the form of a true and recent story.

I'm not sure if I'm feeling appropriately bardish, but nonetheless I'll
press on and give it a go, since one tiny aspect of the story answers a
question recently asked by Brian about Johnny Marr. The Johnny part will
only be about two sentences of this e-mail, though.

When I moved to London, three weeks ago now, it just so happened that Matt
too was about to be on his way there, for business and pleasure. He was
kind enough to suggest we get together so he could give me some stuff for
the web site (stuff stored in London), and introduce me to a few people.
Needless to say I was thrilled with the prospect. What a cool way to be
introduced to London! Well, as with all such things, I try and be
guardedly optimistic. Matt's priorities are not mine, nor should they be.
So, I certainly expected/accepted that this and that could go wrong and we
wouldn't connect. And, sure enough we didn't. Or so I had thought. But,
late Tuesday night I got an e-mail from Matt's manager with a phone number
for Matt, he was in London, but only for one more day. So, at exactly
9:00.00.00 AM the next morning (the earliest I convinced myself it was
appropriate to call), I called. No answer. Damn. I must have called too
late, he'd already left to do whatever things it was he would have left to
do, and I didn't know if he was leaving that day, or the next. I hung up
the phone and was about to console myself with a piece of my flat-mate's
500g Toblerone bar when the phone rang. I'm new to London, and the number
of times the phone has rung since I've been here could just about be
counted on the hand of a quadruple amputee. So, I knew it was one of those
call-back things. "Hello?" the voice said. "Is Matt there?" I said.
"Matt, it's for you." and off we went. London is a very backwards place,
and I mean that in no way in the backwoods sense of backwards. I just mean
that literally so much that's gone on around me here has been directly
opposite to what had always seemed to me the natural order of things. And,
so, the phone thing is a microscopic example. Sure, the US has *69 (which
always seemed oddly and subtly obscene, but not so subtle that the phone
company would surely not have meant it just so, no doubt bowing to
marketing input (as opposed to an otherwise unexpressed perverse humor)),
but I've never had anyone use it with me before. And even if they had, I
think it would be very confusing. In this case the well-packedness and
immediacy made it non-confusing, and yet, the whole exchange was backwards.
Someone called me, says "Hello?" and I ask for someone as though I had
called them. A subtle and stupid thing that is in and of itself
insignificant, but when put against a backdrop of everything else, it seems
to fit.

If anyone's curious I'll have to write down some of the things I've been
surprised at/noticed in London. I've already written a few down in letters
to people, etc. It is a glorious place, so none of my comments are meant
to suggest otherwise. It's just that like anything which is so subtly

different, it reverts one rather back to a child, "What does this do?"
"What does 'zebra humps ahead' mean?" "Why is that light flashing?" "Is
prostitution legal?" (this last is not out of a personal interest you must
understand, the curiosity stems from my having been told conflicting
things; all the phone booths are plastered with florescent business
card-like things (about 100 per booth) that I had assumed were
phone-sex-ish, but are apparently for prostitutes.) (By the way, I found
one such card in my flat-mate's room. Hmm.... And yet, there have been no
lady visitors. Maybe he was using a payphone and needed some scratch
paper.) Anyway. Back to the story that you all came here to hear.

So, Matt gets on the line, blah, blah. We talk, I was a bit nervous, since
the manager had given me the number, and Matt was supposed to have had my
number already, so I didn't know if maybe he was just being nice before,
and he would just be annoyed that I was calling him. But, no, he was super
and wanted to get together. His schedule was tight, so he would call me on
my mobile (cell phone) in the early afternoon. After checking my mobile
phone several times to ensure it was working properly, I left the house for
some of my own errands. He called, but still had things to do, so he'd
call a couple hours later. I went to work, printed up some notes on stuff
to add to the web site. He called, and I headed off to meet him at a pub a
few tube stops away. I got there a half-hour early. Oops. I thought it
would take me longer. The London subway is pretty neat, but it's
impossible (as far as I can tell) to know just how long any trip will take.
At the moment I rather overdo the safety factor and make sure I'll get
somewhere a bit early. But, half an hour was a bit much. Matt and his
friend were sitting by the window and noticed me walk past, so I couldn't
just keep gong. I apologized for being so early, offered to come back in
half an hour, but they were cool about it, and so began another strange and
wonderful encounter with the man whom I could hardly have imagined I would
ever have a relationship with other than as one fan of millions. He's
never treated me as anything other than an equal/friend/guy next door, etc.
And this has been the most overwhelmingly weird thing of it all. He is as
down to earth and real as anyone I've ever met.

Anyway, we chatted about this and that. Some other people came along, all
the people who stopped by were in the recording industry. The pub wasn't
that sort of pub, necessarily, but it was in a trendy area, and there were
some studios around, etc. And everyone had a record label, sometimes
several (and when I say have I mean they were the record label, not they
were signed onto one). Quite bizarre. After a while I wanted to say, "Oh,
yeah, I have a record label, too, it's called, uh..." We went over web
stuff, ideas, general chatter. He asked, so I talked about some of the
work I was doing in my "real" job, and he seemed reasonably interested,
which was neat. It was a great time, and not in the least awkward, which
it certainly could have been. And, one of the people who happened to walk

in (it's a regular haunt of his) was Zeke Manyika (he played drums on Soul
Mining, and did supporting vocals on Infected and Dusk). Meeting him was
mighty cool. Eventually when Matt had to head off for a business-y dinner
meeting, Zeke and his record-label producer guy invited me to sit with
them, which I did, for about an hour or so. They were swell. I ate many
of their nuts. And they didn't seem to mind; or at least that's how I'll
interpret their inviting me to stop back in the future.

It was a delightful evening. The first pub in London that I've liked and
would like to return to.

Alrighty, now that the whole setting's been done. Let me pass along a bit
of info. Nothing super revealing. No hot news items, just some general
stuff you might be interested to know.

Matt really, really loves this new album. He feels it is the best he's
done, and is therefore very excited about it.

He mentioned Johnny Marr in passing, just saying that he had let Johnny
listen to the album, and that Johnny really seemed to think it was
fantastic. So, in answer to Brian's question of, is Johnny involved? No,
definitely not. They're still friends, but they haven't worked together
for many years now.

Matt has some neat ideas for the album cover (Andy will not be involved,
he's doing other things) and much of it's worked out, reflecting the
themes/feel of the album.

I checked with the manager to make sure, and I am allowed to play the new
album for people, (friends, etc.). So, if you're in London, or planning a
trip here soon. Make sure you give me a shout if you want to get an
advance listen. No playing over the phone or anything potentially
recordable, though. Sorry. If you want to hear it you gotta come here,
it'll be on headphones, and you'll be searched for recording devices :)
And if you do listen you have to agree to non-disclosure (i.e., you can
tell a friend, "I loved the album" or "I didn't like the album as much
as..." but no specifics); you'll have plenty of time to discuss it later,
for now, it's still not meant to be more private than that. And if you
live somewhere neat, exotic, and in Europe-ish (with a comfy couch or an
extra bed upon which to sleep) and want me to come to you, that might be
arranged as well! Just food for thought. Obviously this offer would have
to be rescinded if it were to get out of control with too many people, etc.
My mentioning the album before (in my last post), and that I'd heard it
was not an attempt to say, "N'yah, n'yah." I really would like to share
this with you, within the limits prescribed for me. Hopefully you understand.

One last tidbit. Among the people I met yesterday (and saw again today)
was one of the now co-owners of the infamous "War Room" (Matt's London
recording studio, where Matt recorded a number of things, including Dusk).
I'm going to try and make it over there middle of next week to get photos
of it for the site.

*Disturbed (Infected EP)
*Darkness Falls
+Jelly on the Table
+Screw Up Your Feelings
+The Sinking Feeling (not orig. version)

Legend:
* track not yet encoded
? questionable track quality, mastering/re-encoding needed
- - track o.k. for recording onto CD
+ I do not yet have a copy of this track (some do not exist to the best of
my knowledge, email me if you can be of any assitance, thanks)

31 tracks total, 29 currently planned for compilation

For sample quality, go to:
http://www.gci-net.com/~users/j/jwh/violenm.mp3
http://www.gci-net.com/~users/j/jwh/lovestrm.mp3
You'll need to download the files (2.77MB) and listen to them with a MP3
player (WinAmp 1.92). These files are not the complete songs, just samples
to observe quality. Any feedback on tracklisting/quality would be great,
just email me off of the list.

2) Cover art is on the way- as son as I complete it, I'll put it on the
web for all to see and comment on. About 50% done as of today.
Again, any input/samples would be great, the layout is past the rough-out
phase, but I'd still be interested in any ideas.

3) Remember, I cannot stress enough that this compilation will be what we
make it. Anything you can contribute would be great- a comment on the
track order, a sample of artwork, a track or two, even a 'you-go-girl'
would be appreciated. Let me re-iterate also that this is a non-profit
project (I've got a lot of free time) and I really appreciate all that
this list has contributed so far. Anything that you would be willing to
donate to offset the time/money I've put into the project would aslo be
greatly appreciated.

4) Cost/Distribution is looming on the horizon. I'm planning to make the
compilation available in a double jewel case format to save on shipping
costs. For our overseas friends, I've said it before and I've said it
again, I cannot ship to you (with great regret). I will not violate any
international copyright agreements, this includes not being able to ship
to mexico or canada. However, I would greatly like to see someone else on
the list volutneer to help out the overseas listees by creating a system
by which they contact an individual whom I will send several copies of the
compilation to directly for that individual's own use. Past that point, I
am not responsible for where they go. Of course, since the person shipping
them as gifts to his/hers overseas/international friends, they aren't
doing anythign wrong themselves. We simply need to make sure that we don't
do anything 'too illegal' (sounds like 'slightly pregnant').

As for cost, that I'm still working on. It will either be 3.20 (2 CDs),
.70 (mailing envelope), .90 (jewel case), ~2.00 (color copies-inserts)
plus shipping- around $5-10 US Total
- -=or=-
10.00 (CDs, inserts, jewel case), .70
(mailing envelope) plus shipping- around $12-14 US Total
This all depends on how professionally the compilation get reproduced.
(Artwork, booklets, cases, silkscreening of Discs, etc.)
I'll keep you all posted as I inquire as to my possibilities later this
week.

Thanks again for everything and I hope to hear from you if you have any
questions/comments/input. Remember to emial me off the list!

Don't let it ever be said that I don't keep anyone informed as to what I'm
doing...

1) Encoding/Mastering is almost done, just a few songs stand between us
and a great compilation of rare the The. Here is the updated track info:
- -Absolute Liberation
- -Fruit of the Heart
- -Leap into the Wind
- -Mental Healing Process
- -Soup of Mixed Emotions
- -3 Orange Kisses
- -Waitin' for the Upturn
- -The Sinking Feeling (orig.)

- -Cold Spell Ahead
- -Controversial Subject
- -Hot Ice
- -Lip Tripping

- -What Stanley Saw
- -Darkness Falls
- -Nature of Virtue 1
- -Nature of Virtue 2
- -Flesh and Bones
- -Harbour Lights
- -Sleeping Juice
*Dumb as Death's Head
*Angel (Armageddon EP)
*Disturbed (Infected EP)
+Jelly on the Table
+Screw Up Your Feelings

Legend:
* track not yet encoded, possible problem
- - track o.k. for recording onto CD
+ I don't have these, (one does not even exist to the best of my
knowledge)

As you can see, I'm missing a few tracks, most of which I'm sure are on
their way to me in the mail for which I thank you all greatly.
I will post again early next week if there are any remaining tracks that I
do not yet have encoded/mastered.

2) Artwork is almost completely done. I will have it ready in about a
week.

3) Cost- this is becoming a slight problem. So far I have about 25 people
interested in a copy. I'm anticipating about 40 total when all is said
and done. I'm toying with haveing the CDs professionally duplicated
rather than doing it myself, there are a few pros and cons to this plan
though. A pro is that the CDs will be done extremely well and will be
available much earlier, (a real collector's item), a con is that they will
be about $12-$14 delivered. Should I do the entire project myself, it will
take considerably longer (about two months, I predict), but will cost only
$8-10 delivered. I think most people are willing to pay the extra 4 bucks
to get something nicer. I need input on this as it will become a
seriousfinancial burden within a very short period of time, but should I
actually clear 40 CDs delivered, I should be able to pay my bills.

4) Distribution Notes: Overseas distribution needs an 'officer' to
regulate it- the job still stands as open.

That's all I can think of for now, I'll get some sample tracks/artwork up
on the net as soon as I can...

I was just sitting at work reading the news on the ITN site (silent
protest at having to be here on a saturday.) and listening to infected
on the computer's CD widget when i noticed the uncanny relevance of one
paticular song. To those people who were saying that the the's social
stuff was just limited to mind bomb and that it dates very quickly, do
you think it might be time for a sweet bird of truth 98 remix ? God help
me but people are wearing the flares and platform shoes again that i
used to laugh at as a wee boy.

If i was an Arab terrorist i would be hoping to Allah that another woman
doesnt come forward with another accurate description of Billy's wedding
tackle in the next couple of days. Next time the script might not be wag
the dog but Dr Strangelove.

Yours not giving a shit who he slept with

Several weeks ago (was it months?) several people on this list were singing
the praises of “Soul Coughing”. Well, I just want to send a thanks. I was
amazed that for something so different in nature from the music I tend to be
attracted to, there is something really cool and dark under the surface of
these songs. I honestly have only listened to it a few times, but.... I like
it. And it was just what I needed after spending a superficial and hedonistic
weekend in Vegas. Thanks.

The CD is the soundtrack to the film "First Love, Last Rites". Shudder to
Think is the band that composed and played the music. There are guest
vocalists on many of the tracks including Liz Phair, Jeff Buckley, John
Doe, Billy Corgan and our own Matt Johnson. It's pretty good and I'm ever
so slowly beginning to appreciate Shudder to Think. But beware, they are
an acquired taste. Lots of people hate 'em.

Message-ID:

Hello all, sorry you haven't heard much from me in the last week, but
school has begun in southern Arizona and I've been putting a lot of extra
time in at work on the side.

Most importantly, I still do not have these tracks:
Dumb as Death's Head (very poor quality)
Jelly on the Table (I'm not even sure if I will include as I'm not
including any Marc and the Mambas, etc...)
Disturbed (only very poor quality)
Screw up Your Feelings (not released, to he best of my knowledge)

Other than that, the CD Masters are COMPLETE!

Hopefully I'll make even more headway this weekend on the compilation,
including:

1) A definite name, not a working one
2) A track listing of some sort to be finalized at a later date
3) Completion of all Artwork
4) A list of who I have as wanting a copy, so that I can get a better
count of how many I need to make. -I'll post with the names and quantities
that I am currently aware of, so if you are not on the list and would like
a copy, next week would be a good time to contact me

As for financial consideration, I'm thinking of making it $14 prepaid
(includes shipping). That way I can ship everything at once to everyone,
but I'll let you know as I still have my reservation of taking peoples'
money before they get anything.

A note on sales of non-compilation items:

If you live in Norway or the Netherlands, a check is on the way.

If you live in the US and I purchased something from you- please email me
as I've lost your message due to recent ravaging of my mail server by punk
hackers.

Future Plans:
Should this work, I have three other plans in the works-
1) a double-live CD set from various appearances
2) a mood CD (Dusk-ish, but mostly instrumental)
3) a Super theThe MP3 collection, (absolutely everything)- I'll wait on
this until a new album and singles come out...

That's all for now, you'll hear from me again the weekend,
~jwh
