Just thought I would share a wonderful BBS line. Try and get your heads
round this..... 'I used to be indecisive, .... but now im not so sure'
BBS is an amazing album once you get into it, but it seems that it is a
bit of a taboo subject for some reason. Everyone discusses other albums
at length, its different, but so is every album that Matt has written.
What does anyone else think? To me when I listen it justs mellows you out
and you think of things that have happened to you, and before you know it
the tape has ended.
Any comments?

I'm not so sure about the indecisive line, it's a bit of a staple christmas
cracker joke.
However, BBS is a cracker of an LP. Modern Ambient tunes far before they were
popular or cool and great, honest lyrics that I could certainly relate to when
I was a teenager.
Way ahead of it's time. I still look upon it solely as a Matt Johnson release
rather than The the although they are basically the same thing BBS is quite
literally Matt Johnson apart from one track and is very hard to see from any
sort of group perspective.
Life just doesn't seem that simple, anymore.
Jake.

Well, this is my firs real experience using e-mail or any of that kind of
thing, but I am trying to get into it as quick as I can. It was pretty
exciting for me to find the sony the The web page , even if it was out of
date. I have been a the The fan since Mind Bomb, and it still remains on
of my favorites. I have a decent selection of the The stuff, all of the
mainstream stuff, plus the Hanky Panky promo CD and Solitude, which I
thought was mainstream, but judging by the discography, maybe it wasn't.
If a recording of Solitude is rare, and anyone is interested in doing some
trading, e-mail me at alinsley@uvaix.uvic.ca Even if nobody is interested,
please flood my mailbox so I can feel like I'm part of this new-fangled
internet thingy. By the way, if you think it's hard to get rare the The
stuff in the states, try getting it up here in Canada.

4. Never Mind the Bollocks - The Sex Pistols
5. Meat is Murder - The Smiths
6. Brotherhood - New Order

This is my pop collection, I could also add REM ,Wire, The Cure, Soft Cell,
Kraftwerk, Sonic Youth, PIL, Japan, The Stranglers, Bauhaus, Peter Murphy
U2, Janes Addiction etc, etc, etc. My rule is "if it ain't synth. it had
better rock." I won't bother with my Blues list or my Jazz selections. The
reason I was drawn to the The/Matt is odd though. I was an intreverted 18
year old listening to what was then a "Album" rock FM station in 1982. The
Disc Jockey explained that the The was really a lone individual named Matt
Johnson who played all the instruments and did all the production himself.
At the time I was an amatuer athlete and I would buy cassettes to listen on

runs. The more emotion a piece of music could elicit the harder I found I
could push myself. Soul Mining was a great album to train too. Still I have
stong images of looking down to my heartrate monitor beating away at 19o bpm
while the sweat
dripped from me in time with "Perfect." Each following the The album seemed
to be like someone was writing the soundtrack to my life, sadly so
applicable. My favorite author is another outsider William S. but he is
closely followed by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. My favorite director is
David Cronenburg closely followed by Tim Pope. Let's hope Tim can do

I guess you're entitled to your opinion. Now, dare I say that the
Beatles, Blur, Oasis, Radiohead, Suede, etc *all* have more talent than
most of the crappy american bands that are coming out these days on

Radiohead use synths on their latest album "The Bends." (which, by the
way, is a *phenominal* album). And the Beatles, well, they didn't have
the opportunity to use electronic instruments. :) But, overall, yes,
I'd have to admit that synth bands are far superior to guitar bands. ;)

why? just because they choose not to play them? that's like busting on
bands who refuse to acknowledge african instruments or something. why
does a band need to use electronic instruments to gain your acceptance?
and I for one think Radiohead is great.

Has anyone found a copy of "From Dusk 'Til Dawn" VHS video for sale in the
US or Canada. I got a PAL copy from the United Kingdom does
SMV actually distribute this tape in the States. To anyone who has
seen the video in the North America have any idea(s) why it wasn't
sold here. Any of the really "brite" people on this list care to venture a
guess as to why Matt's publishing company would be named
Lazarus music. More profound guesses please as I can already guess that it
is a biblical reference. Anybody else feel we are about to
be hit by another Brit invasion spearheaded by Oasis, Blur, Radiohead and
"the like." I hope so. Someone a long while back asked about the type of
Harmonica/Harp that was used (I think) on Another Boy Drowning live. The
question can only be answered by
Fitting or maybe Maher but there are really only 10 Diatonic harps
including real keys and sharps/flats from G to f# the likelyhood is that the
harp on Another Boy... (live) is a C with special tuning
(like a guitar) tuning is accomplished by fileing the individual
reeds. Steve Baker has a couple of good books on harp that explain
the technique of "tuning." Also there are several "positions" on the
harp 1st position (Straight)2nd position (Cross/Blues) etc.etc. Your best
bet is to get a good teacher or book. The model ie. Hohner Blues Band, Tombo
Lee Oscar does not realy matter. You can even get
by with cheap Huang (Chinese) Harps (they will get overblown quicker) You
can get a distinctly different sound from wood comb or
plastic comb harps as the wood combs become saturated with saliva or
beer and seal the reeds when you are overblowing. Ask nicely at
THETHEXXX@aol.com and maybe Fitting will answer about the Tuneing for the
song. For all you other people at the infected list sorry, sorry for running
on. Oasis and Radiohead in TO all in the space of one week B L I S S.

Not sure of time frame regarding the earlier question. Will have to check the
files to make sure it was o.k. but it's often hard to know, after this length
of time. Also there is no definite way of checking it out using 90's Computer
'Rapide' testing as that wasn't available in the late 70's/early 80's. The
only kind of machines that were available then were those old, German,
Harksner machines. Very noisy and slow and you weren't sure if the
information was completely accurate. I think Harksner are out of business.
They were bought by the old Minox company and broken up. But that would be
the only positive way of testing those tapes out. You may be able to find an
old Harksner in a second hand store in the U.S (at $4,500 for an old one they
ain't cheap!) or I believe the latest Rapides have a Harksner compatible
function which enables you to read tapes & vinyl from the appropriate era in
order to check validity for things like this. Either way The Gadgets records
are pretty insignificant by any standards but we'll try to figure it out and
let you know the answers.

I just recently took a 2 week vacation, and came back with (among other
things) 5 new the The items, one of which was the Perfect 12" with
Nature of Virtue. I've got a couple questions about it.
First of all, does anybody agree with me when I say that this is a
*great* version of this song? IMHO, it's better than the one on Soul Mining.
Secondly, the B-side is called Nature of Virtue (Version 2). Is there
a Version 1 of this song?

there are indeed two versions of nature of virtue, one on a seven inch and
one on a twelve inch. quite different. one was recorded for soul mining,
and the other for porno, or so i was told when i had this question about a
year ago. either way, that is the way they sound--one kind of poppy and the
other kind of weird. same lyrics.
that XXX message had my name on it, and i have no idea what they were talking
about. but it is nice to be remembered.
by the way, the most recent julian cope is pretty great, and kim deal's new
band is pretty weak...

Correction sorry,
There are 12 Keys G, Ab, A, Bb, B, C, Db, D, Eb, E, F and F# of
Diatonic (blues) harp. but only 10 notes on each (not counting
overblows and bends. Here in Canada it is hard to find the sharps
and the flats (impossible in Hohner) A good source is your local "folk"
music shop if they carry Tombo Harps. They are unlikely to stock them but
will order them for you.

Okay, here's a little story about Lazarus - for everyone who doesn't know him -
especially for you, elvis:
There are two men called Lazarus in the bible:
1.) The first one appeared in parable Jesus told: There were a rich man man and
a very poor man (Lazarus) who lived in front of the rich man's house and waited
for some remains of his meals. Both died, Lazarus went to heaven, the rich man
to hell. The rich man asked Abraham to send Lazarus to him bringing some water.
But good old Abraham said: You'd got a good life but Lazarus a bad one - now
you changed your places! (Lk. 16, 19-31)
2.) The 2nd Lazarus was a brother a beloved Maria and Martha from Bethanien. He
was ill and died. Jesus arrived 4 days later and awakened him from the death.
Also a nice story in Joh. 11, 1-59
Good luck finding out why MJ's publishing company is bearing Lazarus' name!

i think it's because of the second one. or maybe a combination of both. MJ
seems to be interested in awakening the spirit from some sort of imposed
slumber///i don't know where the first parable fits in in my theory, anyone
else interested in discussing this? it beats the hell out of the usual
'uhm...when is gunsluts coming out?' and 'my fave albums are...'...critical
analysis of things like this are interesting and they give us insights into
the artists, i think...well anyways...feel free to add on if anyone out
there feels like talking.

This whole synth's vs any other instrument argument is an old one and yet still
a shit one. A massive selection of instruments are available to use and you
should use whatever sound good for whatever song it is you are doing. Suede,
Oasis, Radiohead etc. (these are obviously the 'trendy' British bands for
Americans to get excited by at the moment then, eh? - have you not got Gene,
Ash, Supergrass etc yet, then?) all use synthed backings to some extent so the
argument falls pretty flat, anyway.

I agree that it's a really stupid argument. I think that it doesn't
matter what a band employs for sound, as long as it sounds good. When I
first saw the Wonder Stuff on a stage a few years ago, I saw accordians
and fiddles and I was thinking "hmmm...looks lame." Well, I think prolly
a few or more of you know that I was sorely mistaken. It just goes to
show you that it's not what you play, but how you play it.

ftp anonymous to ftp.nevada.edu and change directory to
/pub/guitar/t/the_the and you'll see "love is stronger than death"
and "this is the day" and "helpline operator". the last two are
recent and are both in the same file called "this_is_the_day.crd".
that's assuming you're looking for guitar tabs.

I don't know whether I'm missing something here but is someone asking about the
availability of The the books in relation to guitar tabs and lyrics etc. If so,
there has been published the Infected The the book with general info and some
guitar tabs and lyrics etc. Bloody good it is too although increasingly hard to
find. Interesting bit where there is a picture of a very early Matt Johnson
demo tape with August and September on the track listing - I don't know whether
it is the same track that appeared on Mind Bomb but anyway, just goes to
show...
So, get on the case and get the Infected book.

I'm afraid not. The question was posed to Matt during the AOL `shindig' =

It's an online record store -- not too bad really. They've got some
