Greetings, The The fans!

I was planning on lurking for a little while but I see there's
no conversation to lurk to! :)

I've been into The The since 1987, when a friend of mine made
me a mixed tape that had "A Sinking Feeling" on it. Who would have
thought, of all the cool songs on SOUL MINING, that someone would
choose a lesser-known song like "A Sinking Feeling" to represent
The The?

She did the same thing for Julian Cope - "Planet Ride" and The
Smiths - "William, It Was Really Nothing." These were the first
times I ever heard those bands, yet even the lesser songs got me
hooked. And, of course, it was a nice surprise to find out that
the rest of those bands' output was even better than the
"representative" songs I was given.

Travis

p.s. This was really just a "ping" to see if the mailing list is
indeed up and running. More interesting stuff will follow!

Hello again! I have a few questions:

1. I, like many of you, have all the albums except THE PORNOGRAPHY
OF DESPAIR. Anyone hear of any plans to re-release that one? Is
it worth re-releasing?

2. At CDNow there's a CD by "Matt Johnson" called SILENCE AND WISDOM.
Anyone know what it is? Different Matt Johnson?

3. Any decent The The bootlegs or live CDs out there? I remember
seeing them on MTV (c. DUSK) and they were kind of sloppy and
sluggish. Is Johnson only at home in the studio, or are there
some brilliant live moments as well?

4. I run a couple of guestbook - style WWW discussion groups. Is
there any interest in me creating one for The The? It would be
trivial for me to do...

That's all for now!

Take care,

Travis

>

Sort of but I never really got into vinyl.
>
> 1. How many CDs, tapes, and records do you own?
200+ CD's, not very many tapes, and even fewer records.
> 2. Do you buy the artist or the albums? i.e. Do you tend to try to
> buy everything put out by a certain album, or do you tend to aim

It varies, sometimes I'll buy something new 'cause I like the sound,
mostly though I just try and catch up with old stuff that I've been
wanting to buy. Most new music that I've heard is crap(Guess I need to
find something besides the radio for exposure to new stuff.) so lately I've
been concentrating on stocking up on my favorites rather than getting
new stuff.

> 3. Will an excellent sounding dub suffice or do you always try to
> obtain originals? Frequently? Occasionally?
I rarely, if ever, listen to tapes at all so I tend to stick to the originals.
>
> 4. Do you collect bootlegs (or foreignly produced live CDs)?
If I see one I'm really interested in and it's not too outrageously
priced I'll buy it, dunno if you'd call that "collecting" though.
>
> B. Are you a gig goer?
When I get the chance, with work and school eating up most of my time
I'm restricted to weekend shows, with occasional exceptions for truly
outstanding bands(Thethe included).
>
> 1. On average, how many music concerts do you attend per year?
6 - 8
> 2. Have you ever "followed" a band's tour? What's the largest

I've seen Bad Religion 4 or 5 times.
> 3. Do you make bootlegs? Do you ever bring tape recorders to
> concerts, even if it's just for your personal enjoyment?
If I had direct access to the sound board and a portable DAT I might
consider it, otherwise why bother with a crappy dub from a cheap tape recorder.

> C. Are you a musician?
not really...haven't seriously played an instrument since Jr. High,
although I have been dabbling with a homemade didgeridoo...

THE THE SURVEY FEBRUARY
1997
===========================================================================
I. Please rate the following (1 = horrid, 10 = one of your top 10
favorites):

A. ALBUMS
1. Burning Blue Soul 8
2. The Pornography of Despair N/A
3. Soul Mining 10
4. Infected 9.5
5. Mind Bomb 9
6. Dusk 10
7. Hanky Panky 8

B. Compilations and Special
1. Solitude N/A
2. The The vs. the World (music promo?) N/A

C. VIDEOS
1. Infected 10 (saw the whole thing on Muchmusic once)
2. The The vs. the World N/A
3. Dusk 'Til Dawn N/A

D. Any live albums / bootlegs (including videos)

I've got a couple of bootlegs that were dubbed for me. One's called 'Live in
New York' (I think) which is alright and the other one is called 'Save Me' which
is much better.

E. Any other albums Matt Johnson has played on...

II. What are your 5 favorite The The songs? Put a * by your favorite.

Uncertain Smile*
That was the Day
Out of the Blue (Into the Fire)
Beyond Love
Bluer than Midnight

III. What are your 10 favorite bands, not including The The?

The Beatles
The Velvet Underground and Lou Reed
Jimi Hendrix
The Clash
The Smiths
Pixies
Bob Mould projects (Husker Du, Sugar, etc.)
Nirvana
Superchunk
Pavement
The Afghan Whigs
Archers of Loaf

IV. What is your involvement in music?

A. Are you a collector? Yes

1. How many CDs, tapes, and records do you own?

400+ One quarter of my collection is comprised of vinyl and cassettes and
the rest are CD's...

2. Do you buy the artist or the albums? i.e. Do you tend to try to
buy everything put out by a certain album, or do you tend to aim
for only The Best albums out there? How often do you "max out"
on bands?

A bit of both... I can be fanatical about certain bands but I will also buy
albums I think are good although I may not be a fan of that particular artist
(ie. Smashing Pumpkins 'Siamese Dreams', Prince's 'Sign o' the Times' and My
Bloody Valentine's 'Loveless'). Sometimes I find myself sticking with an artist
that may have long lost their lustre but because of their wonderful past
recordings, I keep buying their sub-par work (ie. that damn Frank Black, R.E.M.
and Morrissey)

3. Will an excellent sounding dub suffice or do you always try to
obtain originals? Frequently? Occasionally?

I'll buy originals eventually if I dig the artist but I get into many new
bands thru dubbed recordings from friends.

4. Do you collect bootlegs (or foreignly produced live CDs)?

No.

B. Are you a gig goer? Yes

1. On average, how many music concerts do you attend per year?

6-7

2. Have you ever "followed" a band's tour? What's the largest
number of shows you've seen by a single band? What band?

Never followed a tour. I've seen the The twice though!

3. Do you make bootlegs? Do you ever bring tape recorders to
concerts, even if it's just for your personal enjoyment?

No, but I've been thinking about giving it a try.

C. Are you a musician? Nope

1. What instruments do you play? What type of music?

2. How often do you practice? For how long each practice?

3. Are you in a band? How many gigs have you played? For money?

4. How many hours of your music have you recorded?

5. Have you ever sold some of your music?

6. Do you have a web page? Any other place we can get info about
your band?

D. Any other involvement in music? Are you a manager? A producer?
A music-related web page producer? A reviewer? Do you work in
a music store? Are you a DJ?

No

V. What are your other non-music interests? Reading, movies, baseball, hockey

VI. Miscellanea:

A. Personal Information:
1. email address:
2. URL: none
3. Age: 26
4. Location: Calgary, Alberta, Canada
5. Occupation: Engineering Graduate Student

B. What are your 3 favorite...
1. Authors: Don Delillo, Vladimir Nabokov, Michael Ondaatje, Paul Auster,
Fyodor Dostoevsky, Raymond Carver
2. Books: White Noise, Lolita, Catch-22, The Unbearable Lightness of Being,
Crime and Punishment, The New York Trilogy
3. TV shows: The Simpsons, Seinfeld, Kids in the Hall
4. Movies: The Conversation, Chinatown, Opening Night, Annie Hall, Raging
Bull, Glengarry Glen Ross, Pulp Fiction, Red
5. Actors: DeNiro, Pacino, Nicholson, Dreyfuss, Hoffman, Hackman
6. Actresses: Thompson, Streep, Rowlands, Jason-Leigh, Fonda, Lange
7. Computer Games: this ice hockey game... it's really fast and fun and you
can flip the hockey players in the air if you body check them hard enough!
8. Non-Computer Games: bridge, punch-buggy and go-fish
9. Sports/Physical Activities: baseball, hockey, tennis
10. Non-Physical Activities: Reading, watching movies and eating
11. Mixed drinks: Swamp water at 7-11

VII. Any questions you'd like to see on the next survey:

If you were to die tomorrow, how would you want others to remember you?
What is the Euler number of a sphere?

300+

i buy the album first, but if i like it a lot i get curious

define max out - if you mean buying the entire discography,
then i've probably done it with 10-12 bands

i generally only buy cd's, not always for sound quality but for
durability - i drive a lot and used to melt a lot of tapes

again, not unless it's something i really want to hear - not for
the novelty of owning rarities

Yeah, It's a Bootleg 8
Shades of Blue 8 (I know it's on SOLITUDE, but I like it better
than the re-mixes)

Jealous of Youth
Bluer than Midnight
Angels of Deception
Delirious
Armaggedon Days are Here (Again)
impossible to come up with a single favorite -- just five was difficult
enough (as you can see), and this list seems woefully slim and probably
inaccurate

> III. What are your 10 favorite bands, not including The The?
The following are not all "bands", and some are not even rock:

Tom Waits
Pink Floyd (the Roger Waters years)
Dead Kennedys (anything Jello Biafra)
Tori Amos
REM
Talking Heads
They Might Be Giants
Stephen Sondheim (musical theatre composer & genius)
Gilbert & Sullivan (operettas)
Bela Bartok (20th Cent. classical composer)

A little of both, if I hear an album I like, I buy it. If I really like

I am into conducting surveys, and would think this an excellent
opportunity
for us to get to know each other's musical tastes. We can all benefit
by
participating. Get word out about your favorite band and you might soon
find an interesting pen pal or trader on this list!

1. pornography of despair--most of the tracks can be found on b-sides. it
might be re-released after the next album, along with some other rare
stuff. i think only one track has not been released, but the ones which
have been are pretty hard to find now.

2. silence and wisdom--this is by a band called deux filles. matt is
listed as playing on it, but it is hard to tell where. skip it unless you
are a wealthy fanatic.

3. bootlegs--save me, on the kts label. better quality than the offical
live stuff. there are some others around also, but save me is your best
bet. and kts has a web site you can get it from.

The ASK list (morrissey/Smiths) is doing a cover album.
Members have picked one or two Smiths/Morrissey songs to do
and eventually, they'll be pressed to CD for all the members.

Anyone on here willing/able to do something similar?

As I was creating the survey for y'all it sounded to me a bit
like a form letter but it certainly wasn't. Sorry!

If you want, you can check out my web page to see my interests.
Nothing there about survey-related research companies, but you will
notice that I used to run the Julian Cope mailing list (now we have
a guestbook-style bulletin board). On the Cope list I used to do a
lot of surveys, as on the Chameleons list.

I just like surveys! :)

I. Please rate the following (1 =3D horrid, 10 =3D one of your top 10
favorites):

A. ALBUMS
1. Burning Blue Soul - 7
2. The Pornography of Despair - Like I've heard it
3. Soul Mining - 8
4. Infected - 9
5. Mind Bomb - 10
6. Dusk - 9
7. Hanky Panky - 7.5

B. Compilations and Special
1. Solitude - N/A
2. The The vs. the World (music promo?) - N/A

C. VIDEOS
1. Infected
2. The The vs. the World
3. Dusk 'Til Dawn
I can't seem to find any The The videos. You'd think they would be
out there shelved somewhere between John Tesh and Toni Tony Tonee
but nooooooo. Any ideas where to look folks?

D. Any live albums / bootlegs (including videos)
I don't purchase bootlegs. I figure if I'm gonna buy an album, the
artist should get something in return, not the guy who smuggled
his tape recorder into a concert to make a few bucks.

E. Any other albums Matt Johnson has played on...
He's played on other albums? Wow.

II. What are your 5 favorite The The songs? Put a * by your favorite.
August & September *********** I really like it a lot.
Lung Shadows
Beyond Love
Armegeddon Days
This Is The Day

III. What are your 10 favorite bands, not including The The?
REM
Elvis Presley
B-52's
Live
Police/Sting - Does that count as one or two?
Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
Peter Gabriel
Ella Fitzgerald/Louis Armstrong
No Doubt - I don't care what any of you say. I've liked 'em for ten =
years,
so there!
Boston Pops

*** This list is subject to change. Probably by tomorrow. ***

IV. What is your involvement in music?

A. Are you a collector?
Well, I do own a few cds and tapes, even some 45s.

1. How many CDs, tapes, and records do you own?
100+. Only 30 or so are CDs. Hey, I just bought a CD player a year
ago. Who thought the technology would last?

2. Do you buy the artist or the albums? i.e. Do you tend to try to
buy everything put out by a certain album, or do you tend to aim
for only The Best albums out there? How often do you "max out"
on bands?
I try to buy the best out there, but sometimes my judgement sucks.
Anybody want a copy of Bodacious by Mojo Nixon and Skid Roper?

3. Will an excellent sounding dub suffice or do you always try to
obtain originals? Frequently? Occasionally?
Originals.

4. Do you collect bootlegs (or foreignly produced live CDs)?
I believe I've already answered that one.

B. Are you a gig goer?

1. On average, how many music concerts do you attend per year?
In the last couple of years, probably less than 10. Eek, what
happened?

2. Have you ever "followed" a band's tour? What's the largest
number of shows you've seen by a single band? What band?
I've never followed a band. Something about having a job. But I
used to see Boingo ever Halloween at Irvine Meadows years ago.

3. Do you make bootlegs? Do you ever bring tape recorders to
concerts, even if it's just for your personal enjoyment?
No.

C. Are you a musician?

1. What instruments do you play? What type of music?
Kazoo, triangle, and tamborine. Uh, music?

2. How often do you practice? For how long each practice?
Until the novelty wears off.

3. Are you in a band? How many gigs have you played? For money?
N/A
4. How many hours of your music have you recorded?
N/A
5. Have you ever sold some of your music?
N/A
6. Do you have a web page? Any other place we can get info about
your band?
N/A
D. Any other involvement in music? Are you a manager? A producer?
A music-related web page producer? A reviewer? Do you work in
a music store? Are you a DJ?
I was once a manager at music store many years ago. (For the record,
Junior, that was a kushy job)

V. What are your other non-music interests?

VI. Miscellanea:

A. Personal Information:
1. email address: If you need to reach me, hit the reply button.
2. URL:
3. Age: 25
4. Location: Southern CA
5. Occupation: Ad agency.

B. What are your 3 favorite...
1. Authors: Robbins, Rand, Steinbeck
2. Books: Jitterbug Perfume, Fountainhead, House of Spirits
3. TV shows: Biography
4. Movies: Wizard of Oz (Just because of the special effects)
5. Actors: E. Martinez (no relation to A. Martinez)

Wouldn't mind recording a cover or two, but as for the CD pressing...
The Chameleons list recently completed a tribute album and the
guy who made the tapes was disappointed by how few tapes he sold.
More people might buy CDs, but CDs are a much bigger production
commitment.

I suggest distributing tapes first, and then, if people on the list
LOVE the tapes, and think a CD would sell enough to at least break
even, then they could individually invest in the CD production.
That's probably the wisest thing to do, unless someone has (or has
ready access to) a CD recorder and is willing to spend the time
burning CDs one by one.

We've managed to sway a spaniard from our list....we are truly gluttons. I
miss the Euthelene meself. I liken this list to a group of first-timer AA
members (or the various equivalents). It seems many are drawn by our
subject-matter, but interpret the goal in an entirely different manner i.e.
Have you ever met someone who seemingly "loves" an artist to the point of
idolatry, yet never fantisized of being the artist themselves? It happens
(obviously), but.,I derive a certain pleasure in pretending that I can
broadcast my "inner most thoughts" and have them excepted by anonymous
peers.

Perhaps we'll discuss the singificance of Matt's lyrics one day.

You need to send the correct command to the computer address which is
not the same as the list address. Ranting and raving about wanting to
be taken off the list will do no good whatsoever. No one could
unsbscribe you if they wanted to, and I am sure they do by now.

In fact it will make people far less disposed to look up the
information on unsubscribing that YOU should have saved. Adults don't
stomp their feet and whine when they screwed up. They ask politely for
help.

Why don't you try this:

hi guys! so far I have received about 20 survey responses. a very
good turn out indeed! i am sloooowwwly tabulating them and will have
results ready a couple days after they die down.

so, for all of you who haven't mailed in your responses, let's say
the last day is sunday. on monday morning, i will finish assembling
the total sheet and post it to the list. i also plan to put it
somewhere on my web pages, along with everyone's individual responses.

if i were really clever about it, i'd put links from each of the
responses on the totals sheet to the individual responses, but that's
probably overkill.

for you prospective survey issuers:

things i have learned while tabulating this survey by hand:

1. don't ask people to write their email addresses in an emailed response
2. don't ask people to list ten of anything. the favorite bands list is
a real b!tch.
3. don't ask the same question twice (other interests, physical & nonphys
activities)
4. ask as many multiple choice / quick answer questions as possible
5. keep it short
6. goto 5

that's enough for now. bye, y'all!

oh yeah, by the way, i listened to mind bomb last night. very good stuff
to exercise to!

later,

Trav

5. Mind Bomb - 9
6. Dusk - 8
7. Hanky Panky - 7

B. Compilations and Special
1. Solitude - 8
2. The The vs. the World (music promo?) - ?

C. VIDEOS
1. Infected - 10
2. The The vs. the World - 9
3. Dusk 'Til Dawn - ?

D. Any live albums / bootlegs (including videos)

E. Any other albums Matt Johnson has played on...

Gadgetree (Gadgets) - 4

II. What are your 5 favorite The The songs? Put a * by your favorite.

This is way too difficult to limit to 5. The best I can do is10. And
picking a
best of the best is equally impossible ... so you get best per album.
And
this list will be in a constant state of flux ... in fact, its probably
obsolete by
the time I've finished writing it.

This Is The Day
Waiting For Tomorrow *
Uncertain Smile
Infected
Out Of The Blue ... *
Slow Train To Dawn
Violence Of Truth *
Kingdom Of Rain
Helpline Operator *
Slow Emotion Replay (the greatest song title of all time?!)

III. What are your 10 favorite bands, not including The The?

David Bowie
Peter Murphy
Sisters Of Mercy
Stone Roses
The Clash
English Beat
Shriekback
Fishbone
Alison Moyet
Housemartins

IV. What is your involvement in music?

A. Are you a collector? Sort of ...

1. How many CDs, tapes, and records do you own?

100, 100 *, 150

* all tapes are personal recordings of albums/CD's (mine and others),
the single exception being an import version of the Soul Mining
cassette

2. Do you buy the artist or the albums? i.e. Do you tend to try to
buy everything put out by a certain album, or do you tend to aim
for only The Best albums out there? How often do you "max out"
on bands?

For the Top 10 List, I buy pretty much everything they do. For the
rest, I
will buy the album based on its own merit. There are many artists who
have flashes of brilliance (e.g. Pulp, Hunters & Collectors), but can't

sustain it ... I guess if they did, they'd be on the Top 10 list!

3. Will an excellent sounding dub suffice or do you always try to
obtain originals? Frequently? Occasionally?

Almost exclusively originals.

4. Do you collect bootlegs (or foreignly produced live CDs)?

Only if its Matt.

B. Are you a gig goer?

1. On average, how many music concerts do you attend per year?

Used to be 20-30, now 3-5 ... am I getting that old?

2. Have you ever "followed" a band's tour? What's the largest
number of shows you've seen by a single band? What band?

Never followed (money, job). I've probably seen The Hopping Penguins
(local Toronto ska band, who are way too much fun live) 30+ times.

3. Do you make bootlegs? Do you ever bring tape recorders to
concerts, even if it's just for your personal enjoyment?

NO

C. Are you a musician?

Only in my fantasies (I have other, more normal, fantasies too)

V. What are your other non-music interests?

Mainly sports, some travel. Drinking & pool.

VI. Miscellanea:

A. Personal Information:
1. email address:
2. URL:
3. Age: 33
4. Location: Toronto
5. Occupation: Marketing/Telecommunications

B. What are your 3 favorite...
1. Authors: Don't read enough to answer
2. Books: Hitchhikers Guide
3. TV shows: Seinfeld, Law & Order, X Files
4. Movies: Monty Python's Holy Grail, Naked
5. Actors: Nicholson, Pacino, Mickey Rourke
6. Actresses: None from a talent perspective ...
7. Computer Games: No thank you.
8. Non-Computer Games: Sports, cards
9. Sports/Physical Activities: Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer, Hockey,

I just thought of another question that could go on the survey. How did
you hear about theThe? I started listening to them because a friend of
mine who was a big Sinead O'Connor fan bought Mind Bomb for that one
song and let me listen to it and I was hooked ever since. Originally
being from Mississippi, you don't get much music other than country and
top 40 so it was a bit of luck that I ever heard of them.

I heard of the The because of everybody's favorite guitarist Jonny Marr. I
have been into the Smiths for a long time and wanted to hear what the other
members, besides Morrissy, were doing with their lives. I have the same
problem with all the top 40 stuff; I can't get away from it because I liver
in Indiana. Luckily, somehow or another good bands, no matter how obscure,
always seem to fall into my hands.
I think this is a pretty fair question and am courious how people ran across
the The.

As if you're all interested, I'll put down in simple words from where I
came to know theThe.

The year was 1990, the month February (unless my memory fails me). I was
in Jakarta with a friend from Canada; she was younger than I, who was a
meager 16 years. After doing the party thing in that wild and wonderful
city for a week I was infected. My friend had on our first day there, run
into a music store, purchased Infected on cassette, and played it every
time we hoped into a car for the whole time we were in the car. This meant
of course that I listened to the as yet unfamiliar voice of matt johnson
for hours, unceasingly, into the new smells and empty streets.

After a week when my friend went home to Canada, I was infected to the core
by the music and vocals and words that I have been subjected to. But I did
not get my hands on a copy of that cassette (or any other theThe album) for
two more years. I abstained you might say. When I did get around to
purchasing an album, I bought Mind Bomb...

Such is life... begitu hidup ini...

My introduction came belatedly in 1990. It was through one of those friends
who's a bit over-enthusiastic about what he likes. I heard about them years
before but never bothered to listen because he was TOO into it. And when
someone tries to force something down you neck you tend to back off. When I
borrowed Soul Mining and listened on my own, I had a feeling of 'What have I
been doing all these years without this?' But I suppose I'd have been younger
and might not have appreciated it as much. I'm glad I got into it at the age of
17. It's kind-of helped me through up to now. I'm drifting away so I'll stop.

regards to all,

Hi everyone,

I became familiar with the The back in 1983 when a friend of mine from
Toronto, who I met for the first time waiting for tickets to go on sale for
the "Talking Heads" concert there, started to exchange compilation tapes of
new wave music with me. The scene at the time in Toronto was far more
advanced and happening then Philadelphia, where I was from. I was listening
to New Order, Echo and the Bunnymen, OMD, Simple Minds, Cure, Siouxiee and
the Banshees, Yaz, Way of the West......but when he sent me "Uncertain
Smile", on one of the tapes....I went crazy. I purchased the import LP of
"Soul Mining" because I couldn't wait for the domestic issue (even though
Perfect wasn't on it). I've loved Matt's music ever since....and probably
always will. He also turned me onto "The Smiths" from a compilation tape,
"This Charming Man", and I'm forever indebted to him for being my musical
visionary back then. Just recently got back in touch with him and although he
still loves the The and that era of music, he's moved on as he says to
"alternative country". He sent me 4 tapes of obscure (for me) music and I
like some of it, and hate some of it. But taste is subjective and personal.
Oh well, that's my story...

I was a student at Clemson University in South Carolina, 1985. A
close friend and work partner introduced me to the The. He popped the
Soul Mining tape in on the way to work and I thought to myself, "What
the hell is this stuff?". We arrived at work, and for the rest of the
night I found myself humming "This is the Day". I asked to borrow the
tape for a few days.

Between classes I would play one or two songs and listen to the music
only. On the Friday of that week, I sat down with a 12 pack and for
the first time listened to the words as well as the music. From that
point, I have been hooked on Matt's artistic works. I have collecting
everything possible for over 10 years: imports, bootlegs, laserdiscs,
posters, etc. I will be a fan for life.

I stumbled upon the The by accident. I was going to the Univ. of Colorado @
Boulder for the 1989-1990 school year. A record store company (I think it
was Rocky Mountain) had tickets to give away for the The or Red Hot Chili
Peppers. Well, I won the tickets to see the The at the Paramount in Denver.
I knew nothing of the band, so I borrowed a tape, went to the concert and
now I love the band (or him if you like).

I was big into The Smiths in high school; my friend, the The. He bought "The
Beat(en) Generation" when it came out on vinyl and gave me a listen. He then
made me a tape of Mind Bomb when it came out and I thought it was brill. I
actually hated "Dusk" when I first heard it but now it's probably one of the
greatest pop albums EVER. So sensual and deep, it's a perfect late-night
soundtrack for a passionate evening.

I still can't listen to "Soul Mining", and "Infected" is not one of my
favourites although I just bought it on laserdisc for $10!!! - I've never
owned the CD but the LD has every song and a video for it. CD quality with
pictures, pretty good huh?

On a side note, "Hanky Panky" should have been treated as an EP. A good
single, with some filler songs but not much else. Why didn't they follow up
right away with the mythical "Gun Sluts"? Or was that just a joke all along?
Also, MJ said "Hanky Panky" would be the first in a series of tribute
albums. Anyone know what's up next?

All these surveys - when are we going to get some real news? Is there just
NOTHING coming out of England nowadays, or are they all caught up in the
Gallagher bros. and The Spice Girls?

Back in about '87, a friend gave me a tape that had B-52s on one side,
and Infected on the other. I liked the B-52s, but this The The band was
kinda strange. Guess I wasn't ready for it yet as I was only 16 and a
little too mainstream at the time. About a year later I picked up the
tape again and listened to it again and really liked it, so my friend
loaned me Soul Mining. I was sold. Somehow I ended up with Soul Mining
on record and Infected on CD. I kept up with the new releases after
this, and around the time Dusk came out I started collecting everything
I could find. At the time Dusk came out, I could relate to every single
song on the album within about a 6 month period of my life. That's why
it's one of my very favorite albums. I suspect this happenned with Soul
Mining for a lot of people, and that's why it's always listed as a
favorite.

How did I get into Matt?

Shortly after Infected came out, I was exploring new music that I wasn't
familiar with, borrowing CDs from my best friend. My two favorites were
the Bolshoi and the The. So I bought Infected and Soul Mining and, not
long after, Burning Blue Soul. I've stayed with Matt ever since.

The only difference to almost everyone else's story is that I never
"related" to the songs, they didn't "get me through" hard times, etc.
I just loved the music and the lyrics.

I still love the Bolshoi, too...pity they're long gone.

Hey all,

FYI, I've begun a rather ambitious project, compiling a list of ALL
underground music mailing lists, being called, obviously the UMML, or
Underground Music Mailing Lists. (A man of shocking creativity, am I.)
This database is (at present) being distributed in a raw text file format.

A brief description: Dedicated to providing a comprehensive listing of all
music-related mailing lists of an underground nature; including nightclubs,
radio, DJ'ing, raves, and genres including gothic, industrial, techno,
trance, ambient, ethereal, synthpop/new wave, new age, dance,
"electronica", and all offshoots.

If you are interested in a copy of this list, simply send me an e-mail at
this address (mailto:mwaas@shadow.net) with the SUBJECT LINE of
"umml-request" (without quotes, of course). If you have any comments, feel
free to throw them into the body of the message.

Enjoy it!

I discovered THE THE much later than most people did. I first heard them my
freshman year of college, which was in 93. A frined of mine played a couple
songs off dusk, and I was hooked. I then went back and got Infected, soul
mining, mind bomb, solitude....) Dusk is definately perfect album to share
an intimate evening with someone. An exgirlfriend has many memories of the
line "How many whores have walked through that door..." sounding through
the room while we shared an intimate evening.

Recently people have been ripping on Hank Williams, and wondering why Matt
would do a tribute album to some stupid country singer. It's probably
because Hank Williams is one of the most influential musicians in music
history. I personally don't like to listen to his music, but that's just a
matter of personal taste. Hank was a major influence to Bob Dylan (another
one people make fun of all the time.), and Bob Dylan influenced everyone.
His influences can probably be traced to any modern day artist. He may have
just been some honkey tonk hick, but he touched a lot of people. That's why
I think Matt did a tribuet album to him. Just a thought....

Well, last year sometime, I was looking through the WWW cache at our
site, and came across a filename with the contents 'porn' - naturally, I
was interested, and had a look - much to my colleagues' disappointment,
it was a GIF of a handwritten cassette cover for PoD.

Me being one of the only big WWW surfers with an interest in the The at
our site, I immediately assumed that I had visited a site with this
graphic, but cancelled the download before it reached my workstation -
with the cache dutifully continuing the image request and hanging on to
it.

The thing is - I can't recall which site, and none of my bookmarks
indicate that it is current. It may have been from Steve Hills
discography, but I am unsure. There is also the point of validity - was
it an original scan, or a mock up done for completeness.

The graphic did look very much like the handwritten stuff in the Infected
songbook, and also the hand written lyrics and messages in various the
The CD covers.

If anyone has a copy, could they let me know.

If an original, it would settle once and for all the exact track list!

Sean

PS Sorry if my sudden de-lurking surprises - I ran out of time to fill in

My discography is up again. If anyone spots any functional problems, let

If you see the image you remember, thn you have your answer. There is one
scan I made from one of the record sleeves, I think. It is Matt's
handwriting, but it only lists a couple of tracks.

Was it porn.gif or pron.jpg or what?

There's a nice archie-like FTP searcher at:

http://www.sibervision.com/sh/htm/links.html

You can type in the exact name of your file (porm.gif or whatever) and
then it will return you a list of FTP directories that have that file.

I only stumbled across this handle archie-like page just recently; if
anyone happens to know of any others (since this one seems to be down
every once in a while), please let me know!

I saw The The in 1989/1990 in Denver for the The The vs the World tour. At
that time I had no idea who they were or anything about their music (I
borrowed Mind Bomb for a couple of hours before the show to get an idea of
what the music sounded like). At the concert (which was excellent) they were
singing a song in which the female back-up vocalist let out a killer solo.
When she did this, she was backlit with this deep blue light and it was very
cool. When she was done with that verse, the audience went nuts. Well, I
didn't know much about The The so I didn't know the song, but since then I've
figured it was either "Slow Train to Dawn", "Angels of Deception", or
"Kingdom of Rain". If anybody knows what the song was, please let me know, I
have been trying to figure this out for 6-7 years.

when you say solo, do you mean she sang a song all by herself?... I saw the
89/90 tour and I don't remember her doing so... I do remember that she sang the
Cherry and O'Connor parts of 'Slow Train to Dawn' and 'Kingdom of Rain'
respectively... whatever happened to her?... I thought she was great!... she was
a good-looking woman and she danced like a demon!...

Hi all.
Dunno if I spelled his name correctly, but Eric S., Matt's guitarist on
Hanky and supposedly on this new album is currently on tour with Paula
Cole, a great female vocalist.
I saw her show last night at TLA in Philadelphia. Eric played great, and
the stage chemistry between them was quite good. Wonderful show.
Questions surrounding this, however:
Does Eric's touring now mean anything about the the? Does it mean that
Eric's work on the new album is finished? Does it mean he is no longer
working on that project? Does it mean the album is done? Do reports that he
is leaving Paula's tour in a month or so mean anything about the the's
album or touring schedule?

of Hanky Panky, read under where it says 'A Brief History Of The The', and
the last entry is 'Gun Sluts -COMING SOON-.

This night has opened my eyes...

Lately it seems that all I do condemns me, condemns me to a situation in
which I have to act and speak as I really am; I've been for a year now
attempting to prolong a friendship that perhaps ought to have dissolved a
year ago, by doing the change self thing - by experimenting with different
moral codes and ideas of humanity. I've reached at last the end of the
road. I can go no further; for if I take one more step in the direction
I've been travelling this last year, I will step over the edge of the sheer
cliff, and fall as I never have before. And unless I can jump at the
ground and miss, I will be a shallow, lifeless, featureless mass of human
pulp. The sad part of my situation is that in recovering my senses, and
being once more the man I wish to be, I will inevitably lose the friend
that I believed I had. I think it is for the best. And while I start the
next episode of my life, I await another creation from mj. I feel that I
have passed now the days of Dusk, with its thoughts of self, its expose of
mj's soul; the music keeps me, but I no longer keep the music as I once
did. I think that I will have to play my own... The planet earth may be
slowing down, but I'm speeding up!

Gun sluts! Well, I'm currently working as a switch bitch!

You're a cool one indeed Bambang, but I fancy being able to produce
like Matt everytime I hear his work. It's a mindset and that was my
point.

The relevance mj's music has to me is important, and life goes on. I
Speak my thoughts, my mind, but you merely think an addict. What a
shame... Yes I'm just a fawning little girl who worships the
Mattsiah...Think me and addict if you like, but I was actually making
a dig towards the addict, rather than the fawning little girl who
ponders the creative mechanism that allows Matt to channel the human
condition into print and then into song....and have it consumed by his
peers as the "fruit of Paradise." You speak of relevance, well then
you have consumed as well. And you returned for more, as you are still
subscribed to Infected (one again, the reasoning behind my
letter...thx for staying. We are the captive audience).

P.s. I didn't like that bit about "What a shame..." I'm neither an addict
nor a little girl....As far as I know ;)

Sorry Dave,
I forgot to turn the metaphor machine off. I was just answering Peter in
the same style as my initial post and his response. In other words, just
putting a lot of shit on the list...especially if one prefers straight
forward thought and language. I'm afraid I went off on a bit of a tangent.
I'll be quiet for a while now. The unsubscribes were gettin to me.
