Hi
I've been hanging around in the background of this great list for quite a
long time now, just reading those sophisticated posts :). I'm glad to be a
member of it, and I think it's about time to post something.
Now to my "story":
The first time I got in touch with "th The" was in school when I was about
15. Some friends of mine sometimes talked about a musical group I never
heard of before, probalbly because here in Germany it is quite unknown. As
time went by I became very curious, so one fine day I asked them if they
could lend a CD. Of course they did! So, at home first of all I had a look
at the cover: there was a guy staring at me. And in a normal, but fiery font
there were written the two small words "Mind Bomb". I turned it on and I
have to admit that I didn't like it at all... apart from the fifth track
"The Beat(en) Generation" :). I don't know why but I decided to tape,
though. I think Matt's art already captivated me without noticing.
A week later I decided to give it another go. After listening to it about
five times in a row I thought "this is it". The next day I owned my first
"the The" CD. And now "The Beat(en) Generation" is my least favorite "Mind
Bomb" song, but I still like it :).
Because it is very difficult to get other than the "official" albums here in
Germany, I just own "Burning Blue Soul", "Soul Mining", "Infected", "Mind
Bomb", "Dusk", "Hanky Panky". Apart from that I have some singles.
I also have "Solitude", which isn't available in Europe, and a promo CD of
"Slow Emotion Replay". Such rare items aren't easy to get here, so I'm glad
to own them :).
I don't have a favorite "the The" album, which doesn't mean I don't love
Matt's music :), but in my opinion it strongly depends on the mood I'm in.
But of course there are one or two songs I never enjoy listening to:
"Kingdom Of Rain" for example. Although the lyrics are great I can't bear
Sinead's voice! The same goes for "Slow Train To Dawn" and Neneh Cherry.
But that's just _my_ opinion :).
Bye for now
with best wishes from Germany
Rudiger

Greetings from NZ,
A couple of days ago, I bought a 'Double nice price' twin cassette. It
has two cassettes for the price of one, Soul Mining and Infected. It
says 'two originals' in red and white, right accross the front. But,
Soul Mining has four extra tracks on it.
Three orange kisses from Kazan.

Waitin' for the upturn.
So, if you are like me, a collector who will probably never get my hands
on the Pornography of despare album, this is a major bonus.
My advice, check out the cheap and nasty's.
Cheers.

There's a reason for the title not being listed though - the track has
no title. I believe the Some Bizzare album track was one of the very
earliest (maybe the earliest) The The tracks to appear. I'm guessing
that since it was possibly the only The The track to be released at
that point, they didn't think it needed a title :-)
As for saying bad things - well, I like The The generally, but this
track didn't do much for me - not nearly as accomplished as The The's
later stuff.

I have this LP and indeed there is no track listing. The jacket just says the name of the group.
The label on the lp says The The (The The) instead of a title in qoutes.
The sleeve indicates the name The The, gives credit as follows:
Keith Laws: synthesizers / Drum Machine / Vocals
Matt Johnson: Guitars / Vocals
Composed by The The.
The label is Celluoid of France, no date. CEL 6595.
Just the facts, ma'am, just the facts...

Could it be the same track that was released both as a single and on about
three different compilation albums on 4ad records ?. I can't remember the name
of the track now, but the single was called Black and White, released by the
original The The line up in 1980. They might have shoved it on this lp as a
taster for things to come, just a thought.

1. I would say that "Soul Mining," is The The's best album-only my
opinion, although Dusk and Infected aren't far behind.
Next would be the first The The record I heard, Mind Bomb, which, in
truth, needed more of a mix between the dark subject matter in the
lyrics and melody, which it didn't achieve. Having said that, I love
August and September and the opener.
Burning Blue Soul is an interesting, yet patchy LP, that grows on you- I
like "Like a sun risin'" "Song Without an Ending," and of course
"Another Boy Drowning," but there are too many inconsequential little
instrumentals on the album- it's still good though.
I don't mind Hanky Panky, although the title's weak and uncharacteristic
of The The. It's flawed but by no means a disaster.
2. There can be little doubt my favourite The The song is the quite
magnificent "Uncertain Smile."
3. Does anyone out there actually have "Controversial Subject?"
4. Great news ain't it, regarding the provisional April release of the
new album- does anyone know of a title, single or whether Johnny Marr
and Co. are back in the fold?

Well, I've finally gotten around to scanning in the picture.
The Dec96 issue of English GQ featured a "Great things about being
British" type motif, and listed, amongst others, Mr Johnson on the
cover. Much to my dismay, the 'Interview' consisted on a couple of
thoughts, and a list of 'Typically British' type icons. He was also
featured in a series of full page photos of British Celebs, the
pertinent on of which I will shortly upload to:
http://www.geocities.com/Colosseum/Sideline/7079/mj.gif
The brief article was thus:
Matt Johnson, 35
THE WORLD SERVICE

EALING FILMS (ESPECIALLY ALEC GUINNESS)
A P5B ROVER
"I live in New York. I get a bit stirred up when I come to Britain - it
has become an assembly-line state. Everyone starts jumping up and down
when a Korean factory opens up. The Japanese think of Britain as a
senile state, and people do tend to talk about Britain in the past
tense. This new laddishness is turning the clock back, too. British
people tend to look poor and browbeaten, postwar architecture has been a
disaster; everything's done on the cheap. I never felt like I fitted in
here... I'm not sounding too negative, am I?"

I could care less if Johnny Marr was on this release, I think people need to let go of
that venture...okay so I'm letting the constant banter about the great JOhnny MARR, get to me. Enough said.

I agree. It's been great with or without him. It was good to see the tour when
he played though.

Mine too, if you held a gun to my head and forced me to choose.
I'm glad I don't have to, though, since I love all of them.
>>2. There can be little doubt my favourite The The song is the quite

I love that one too....but I can't pick a favorite the The song,
that would be too hard. Off of SM it'd have to be Giant.
>>3. Does anyone out there actually have "Controversial Subject?"
Yep, though not an original copy, just a tape of someone else's.
What I really want is a copy of "Flesh and Bones" I used to have
it on a 12" of Kingdom of Rain, until it was stolen :-(

Yes, very exciting....I just wish we could have gotten Gun Sluts, experimental
or not. We waited long enough for it, only to be told "Oh, we just aren't
going to release it." Even a limited release for us die-hards would have been
nice.

Wayne, I'd have to agree with ds here. Mind Bomb needs a several good
playings, and if the opportunity arises, the break down of a really
intense relationship to hit home!
I first picked it up pretty soon after it's release here in NZ back in
'89 (?) and went to Matts concert here in Christchurch shortly after.
Magic concert - pity he hasn't come back since.
Hey, did the following ever make it to the list??

FOOTBALL (MAN UNITED)
EALING FILMS (ESPECIALLY ALEC GUINNESS)
A P5B ROVER
"I live in New York. I get a bit stirred up when I come to Britain -
it has become an assembly-line state. Everyone starts jumping up and
down when a Korean factory opens up. The Japanese think of Britain as
a senile state, and people do tend to talk about Britain in the past
tense. This new laddishness is turning the clock back, too. British
people tend to look poor and browbeaten, postwar architecture has been
a disaster; everything's done on the cheap. I never felt like I fitted
in here... I'm not sounding too negative, am I?"

Hi from NZ,
Just thought I'd put my two cents worth in. Just as with the albums,
I don't really have a favourite track. Certain albums, tracks tend to
'key-in' to certain moods. But I remember a time about 7-8 years ago,
when many of the friends that visited me, made music requests as they
walked in the door. The most common request was, "you know, the one with
the piano". Uncertain Smile appealed to huge range of people down here
in New Zealand. But forced to chose a favourite (as with the earlier,
and drastic scenario), I could only norrow the field down. In no
particular order, these would be; Uncertain Smile, This is The Day,
Perfect and Lonely Planet. And that's the best I could do!
I have only had Hanky Panky and Mind Bomb for a couple of weeks, so
that may change later. Mind Bomb, I'm surprised to admit, has hardly
seen the inside of my CD player, and yet Hanky Panky has occupied one of
my two CD draws since I got it. When I listen to the album, I am
constanly reminded of my brilliantly talented Grandfather, who past away
a few years ago, heard by many, but remembered by few. He played banjo
or guitar, while playing a chromatic harmonica at the same time. He was
able to play the chromatic by using an ingenious foot-pedal and cable
system that he built himself, to change the pitch. Then when I opened up
the Hanky Panky booklet, I noticed he even looked a lot like Hank
Williams. Thanks Matt and co. for keeping the memories alive.
I'll give Mind Bomb another shot latter.
Cheers for now, Wayne.

Anyone willing to part for a fair price or know about good sites to search?
Please respond to my email, unless you have really cool site info.

Johnny's no longer in the The. However, I have heard that Dave Hirsch makes
a special appearance on the new album--playing the banjo and Jew's Harp.
