Hi, I just joined this list. Some nice chap advertized this new list
on the Smiths mailing list, so I naturally subscribed since I think that
Johnny Marr is one of the best guitarists around.
I first got into THE THE when they opened for Depeche Mode in 1993. I
am a big dM fan, and I hadn't heard anything by THE THE, so I decided to
buy _Dusk_ so that I would be familiar with some of THE THE's music when
I saw them live. To my delight, _Dusk_ was excellent and has spent quite a
bit of time in my CD player. I now have all of the studio albums except
for Pornography of Dispair. _Dusk_ and _Infected_ are my two favorite
THE THE albums.
I'm also a Pink Floyd fan, and I've noticed that Matt Johnson has a
certain insight to the world and human existance that is only paralleled
by Roger Waters, imho. (Roger Waters wrote many of Pink Floyd's lyrics
back during their glory years; Dark Side of The Moon through The Wall).

Looking forward to hearing from other THE THE enthusiasts,

Well, I got my first listen to a piece of _Hanky Panky_ today. A friend
of mine found a promo CD single for "I Saw the Light" which also contained
three tracks that will not be on the album. I've listened to it a few
times and all I have to say is...bring on the album!! Matt once again has
not disappointed. The album track, "I Saw the Light", sounds more like a
regular the The song than a Hank Williams song. It wouldn't sound out of
place on _Dusk_.

The other three tracks are acoustic tracks with Matt doing the vocals and
Eric Schermerhorn on acoustic guitar. According to the back of the CD case,
"tracks 2-4 were recorded by Matt Johnson in Room 69 somewhere in New York
City". All three tracks are covers (old country and blues songs, I guess).
I've never heard of any of them, but they're all quite good. The tracks are:

1. I Saw the Light (Hank Williams Sr)
2. I'm Free at Last (Lewis G. Candys)
3. Someday You'll Call My Name (Eddie Hill/Jean Branch)
4. There's No Room in My Heart (For the Blues) (Fred Rose/Zeb Turner)

So, does anyone know the US release date of _Hanky Panky_? I know it's set
for January 30th in the UK. Will it be out on the 31st in the US? I can't
wait.

keep a better eye out for it. i would really like to hear it. i thought
that dusk was an incredible album and i can't wait to hear the new

especially the last 3 tracks on mind bomb.

Ok, I am also brand new to the list. I have only been a fan of the The
for about 7 or 8 months, but I have become semi-fanatical about them in
this short time. I have the following CD's (so far) - Dusk, Solitude,
Mind Bomb, Infected, Soul Mining, and Burning Blue Soul. Where the heck
do you get _The Pornography of Dispair_? Is this available in the US? I
also have the "bootleg" tape that came as a promotion with Dusk. Love,
love, love Dusk, Soul Mining, and Infected...pretty much in that order.

I'm gonna say something here, that you probably won't agree with, but I
don't find Mind Bomb or Burning Blue Soul to be on the same level as
those others I mentioned. Ok, I can see that a lot of time and thought
went into Mind Bomb. It definately has all of the layers and depth as
the others, but it is grating to me. I told this to the buddy that
introduced me to the The and he almost strangled me on the spot. Maybe I
need to spend more time with those 2 albums. Burning Blue Soul is much
more ambiant, and is cool SOMETIMES, but I'll tell you, I think that Soul
Mining, and Dusk are 2 of the best CDs in my collection.

Some other music that I'm really into are Oingo Boingo, David Byrne (and
the T-heads), Kate Bush, Sting/Police (of course), REM, Gabriel, U2,
Shriekback, Cranberries, and Sinead. I love music with passion, and I
think that the above mentioned have lots of it.

I am really psyched to communicate with others that are into the The. I
only know one other person that likes em, and he is on the other coast.

So far, I have found only one the The Web Site. If you haven't found it,
let me know if you want the URL, and I'll send it.

I have been looking to get the lyrics for Soul Mining for a long time,
and I understand that the album has the lyrics on the sleeve. Anyone
have these in an ASCII file? Would love to get it. Can't find it
anywhere on the i-net.

Oh, the reason that I attached the msg above is that I am in total
agreement with the Waters comments. Waters and the old Floyd (with the
REAL Pink at the helm) is god. Especially love the Waters solo stuff
(Pros and Cons, KAOS, and sort of like the new one (Amused to Death)).

Can't wait to hear from everyone.

"The Pornography of Despair" was never released...*sort of*.
Most of the songs that made up the "lost" album were released as B sides,
mostly to singles from "Soul Mining". If anyone knows a track listing or any
other info on "Pornography..." please post.

and I didn't want to pay 10 bucks for the disc because I didn't really

So _Pornography of Despair_ can be "created" from B-sides? Are all of
these B-sides available on single discs? A track listing would be cool.

I have been listening to _Mind Bomb_ non stop, and must admit that this

hey there folks,
I picked up a free sampler of the The's new album. It says the album will be
out Jan 31, so I guess that answers a few questions. The sampler sounds pretty
good, I like the country influence.
The tracks are:
1. Honky Tonk
2. I Saw the Light
3. I'm A Long Gone Daddy
4. Weary Blues From Waiten'

I'm looking for someone to send me a copy of the extra live album that was
included with the initial copies of Dusk.
I have tons of bootlegs to trade, sorry no theThe, but would love to get some.
I love all types of music, so send me your list or ask me to send mine. Ask and
ye shall recieve.
I guess that is it, waiting to hear from ya.

I don't know if its customary but have noticed others do so here goes:

My name is Evan Price, and I just joined the list. I have been a the The fan
since the release of _Sould_Mining_.

My favourite album todate is _Infected_ , with "Sweet Bird of Freedom" and
"Violence of Truth" being my favourite singles.

I have seen the The 3 times. Once during the _Mind_Bomb_ tour, once during
the _Dusk_ tour, and once when they did the "secret" show here in Chicago
when they were in town warming up for DM.

The _Mind_Bomb_ tour was a funny story. I had tickets for the show in NYC at
the Beacon Theater. I show up at the Beacon to find out the show was
cancelled (I think Matt's brother was ill or something). I was told to hold
on to my ticket, and the show would be rescheduled. The show was
resecheduled around 2 months later. I had baught the tickets over the phone
from TicketMaster, and had no idea what kind of seats I had. The seats said
something like DD. I figured it had to be the 30th row or something. When I
asked to person taking the tix at the door, "are theses seats any good?" the
response I got was, "Youre funny". I didn't understand untill the person led
me to the FRONT ROW! I had never had fron row seats to any seated show.
Mind you I go to ALOT of concerts. Todate that was one of my greatest
concert experiences.

Anyone know the status of the band? Whats up with Johnny Marr?

I have both the cassette sampler and the promo CD single from the
new album, and I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised.

I've always thought that hank Williams and Patsy Cline represent
the "cool" side of country, but I really wasn't sure I wanted to hear a
whole album of Williams tunes.

However, Matt "the the-izes" the material to the point that I'm
convinced I'm hearing something totally new. I can't wait to get my copy of
the album on the 31st.

I still can't help but hope for a new album of original material,
though. Anyone heard anything about this?

I don't think _The The Play Hank_ was ever released, just planned.
_Hanky Panky_ looks like an expanded version of it. And its out in
Canada at the end of the month. I've been hearing "I Saw The Light"

Where do you get this information (an EP from mid-late 80's)?
I don't think "The The Play Hank" exists yet, but it will under a different

Hello

Thought i'd do the same as recent posters and give you a little
background into my The The past.

It all goes back to about 1983 when watching a crappy BBC2 music
program and hearing Uncertain Smile for the first time, this is still
in my top five of all time. (along with The Blue Nile, Joy Division,
Fiszher Z and Xymox)

I have all the UK albums to date except Burning Blue Soul which I
just dont fancy listening to. Soul Mining, Infected and Dusk were
great albums, Mind Bomb was a bit of a dissapointment for me, but it
has some excellent tracks on it.

The latest single doesn't appear to have done much in the UK, I am
pleased to hear the new album is out soon, Hanky Panky? looks like
Matt is mellowing in his old-age.

Anyway, its nice to hear from fellow The The fans, even if they are
Americans ;-)

Hi everyone,
I`m completely new to this list but it`s brilliant to be part of this.
My name is Peter and I`m from Hungary (Central Europe check it out on a map).
I love The The since 1989 from the Mind Bomb LP.
I know that it`s probably weird to you all but i collect the good old vinyl
and love it. So if you have any unwanted vinyl stuff to sell or just to give it
to me free let me know.(It can be The The or any indie stuff ):
I have a few details that interest you.
Did you that the song "Uncertain Smile" is the modernised version of "Cold
Spell Ahead " from 1981 ?
I know the titles of two tracks from "Pornography.." for sure "Absolute Libera-
tion" and "Leap Into The Wind". I don`t know if they were released on CD or not
but you have to fork out apprx.$30 for it on vinyl 7".
Someone wrote that the UK version of "Infected" contained extra songs. Yes,
there were 3 extended versions of "Infected","Sweet Bird.."and"Slow Train..".
And lastly Matt himself said in one his interviews about "Pornography.." that
"..it was just a few white labels promos", so rush out and watch this to pop
up on the market.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Peter
Ps:My favourite album of The The is Mind Bomb because lyricly it is a mind
bomb and Johnny Marr is brilliant on it.

I decided to play Mind Bomb again at the weekend, I had forgotten
how good it really was. There are two stand out tracks for me
'Kingdom of Rain' which is co-sung brilliantly by Sinead O'Connor
and 'Gravitate to Me', the latter is the best song I have found yet

was working late at work. Time was about 11:30 and I had the radio on
real loud since I was the only one in the building. The DJ played a
'modern rock block' of The The. It was 'Love is Stronger then Death' and
'Uncertain Smile'. Well call me hooked. I left the building and stepped
across the street to the mini-mall where the Wherehouse (where? the
wherehouse.) was still open and tried to decide which album to buy. I
eventually bought Dusk 'cause it had the fancy schmancy sticker that said
for the lost ,lonely and lustful. I decided that was me and went back to
work - plugged the disc into the cd-rom and programmed away until it was
over. It eventually became The Best Album of 1993, even with competition
from Marc Almond and 'absinthe' and half a dozen other albums that I had
dedicated to my ex...PSB 'Very Relentless' anyone?

Well, I'll give you my demographics in the event that you know anyone in
the Bay Area (Berkeley.San Francisco) who needs a boyfriend or just to
find out who's on this list.

GWM 22 computer programmer/Desktop publishing/student into Marc Almond,
Morrissey/Smiths, The The (currently in that order), post-modern
art/artists, tries to wear black, but sometimes settle for pure
complementaries, anything else? I dunno.

Thanks for reading this far,

yes, i am checking into it.
how many messages have you sent already (that never made it)?
has anybody else had this problem so far?

by the way, as an info to everyone, this list was created about two
weeks ago, so it's still an infant and i am working on the
technicalities.

so please let me know the exact problems you have had and i will take
care of them.

also, please let me know if there is anything that can be improved
about this list, any other "official" subjects you would like to talk
about, or anything else that you think will make this a cooler list.
my original motivation for creating INFECTED was my love for the The's
music (naturally), but i think it can also be a good place to talk
about absolutely anything else that is of interest but is not
necessarily immediately the The related (eg other groups etc).
as a starter, is anyone into the music of new model army?

I'm a newcomer to this group, and I greatly enjoy theThe. While I don't
own everything theThe has ever produced, I do rank them as one of my
favourite bands, and Dusk as one of my favourite albums of all time. It
has been brought to my attention by the creator of this group that the
topicality is not limited to discussions about theThe. So, I'm going to
use this opportunity to mention one of my other favourite bands, Morphine.
Morphine is, in my opinion, one of the best bands around, and while their
sound is quite different from any other band, they should be attractive to
theThe fans. Morphine's music is best described as a sultry
fusion of rock, jazz, blues, and a dash of something I can't quite
describe. Mark Sandman's voice is deep and fluid, the lyrics are often
passionate, always witty, and the instrumentation is utterly absorbing.
If you've not experienced the mesmerizing, bass and sax-rich melodies of
Morphine, you are missing out on a great pleasure.

N.B. If your tastes are somewhat eclectic, Leonard Cohen is also worth
looking into.

hi there,
I agree that this way is very good to talk about other things not just The
The. For example there is The Smiths, as I read your letters many of you
like them. Actually they`re my favourite at the moment (then comes The The).
I think Morrissey provided much more fuss that can be discussed here.
His whole break up with Johnny Marr was quite a mess, but I don`t know how
others feel about this. I, personally, was very sad when i learnt the news,
back in 1987.

I'd say that the Smiths are my 4th or 5th favorite band, and my current
favorite Smiths album is Meat Is Murder, followed closely by The Queen Is
Dead.
It's probable that many people on this THE THE list are also on The
Smith's list, so maybe we can compare and contrast the two.

Actually, I plan to cover a couple of subjects, but why create a lengthy
subject line when I can just babble in the opening sentence :)

WFNX in Boston has begun playing the new single. They've always been pretty
supportive to Matt, so hopefully it'll continue. _Dusk_ got very heavy
airplay and the older songs still get played. In fact, on New's Eve of 1989
the station polled it's listeners for the top 100 songs of the 80's and
"Uncertain Smile" came in at #2, losing out only to "How Soon Is Now?"
How about other areas? Does the The get much airplay?

Someone (Patrick?) mentioned Morphine and how much they enjoyed them. Well
I'm not sure if he's aware or not, but there is a connection between the The
and Morphine. Mark Sandman of Morphine was in a band called Treat Her Right
in the late 80's. They put out two albums on RCA and both are highly highly
recommended for Morphine fans. It's much more bluesy than Morphine and
isn't solely a Mark Sandman band. David Champaigne was also a big contributer
although where he ended up, I don't know. Like Morphine, the band was
somewhat unusual in structure. It consited of Low Guitar, Slide Guitar,
Cocktail Drum, and Harmonica. Oh yeah, I mentioned a the The connection :)
The harmonica player for Treat Her Right was Jim Fitting. Does the name
sound familiar? He was the harmonica player on the The's last tour. I
hope he becomes a full time band member, because that boy can wail!
Like I said, if interested in checking them out they released two albums on
RCA, _Treat Her Right_ and _Tied to the Tracks_.

Oh yeah, I think it was mentioned on the Smiths list about Johnny Marr not
being on the new album. Is this true? I forget who the guitarist mentioned

On the _Shades of Blue_ EP (and later the _Solitudes_ collection), The The
covers Duke Ellington's "Solitudes" and a song called "Dolphins" (don't
know who originally did that one).

And the whole new album is supposed to be Hank Williams covers, is it
not? (I've been looking forward to this for a while; I hope he does
"Ramblin' Man".)

Not sure how many folks are on this list, since it's infant stage
I've been told, but...

About 10 years ago, a friend gave me a tape with a bunch of bands
and a song on it called 'Perfect Day.' I really liked that song,
but he labeled the band as The Normal (no doubt, the name The The
threw him off?), and so with great frustration I hunted for the
album it came from. Then a couple years later, I independently
bought Infected and it never left my walkman. Upon buying the
previous album, Soul Mining, I was shocked to find 'Perfect Day'
was actually by MJ!

So happily the circle was complete, and I've bought and kept evrything
I could find. Got a little burned, buying 'Shades of Blue' and
'Disinfected' as imports and seeing them re-released really cheap
on one disc as 'Solitude,' but I've gotten over it. I have almost
without exception loved all of his original songs, and his covers
have been AWESOME (Solitude is sweet).

Questions: I saw a rumor about 'Hanky Panky' being released at the
end of the month here in the U.S.. What is it? I have never seen
or heard 'The The Play Hank,' an EP from mid-late 80's, and wondered
if Hanky Panky was a re-release or re-mix of those songs?

Furthermore, does anyone HAVE 'The The Play Hank' ?

I was lucky enough to see them when they toured with Depeche Mode -
though I like DM, I'd have rather they opened for The The. Quite
good, but the crowd wasn't there for them. Prior to that, I have
had tickets to two shows, only to have one canceled due to MJ's brother's
death (The The vs. The World tour), and another show canceled here in
Raleigh due to lack of ticket sales. So just seeing them was a miracle
as far as I'm concerned.

That's enough, I've exhausted my two anecdotes already.

Later,
Aaron

I owned a cassette in the early 80's called "If you can't please your
soul, you can't please yourself." A compilation from the Some Bizarre
label. Had Marc Almond, Cabaret Voltaire, Coil, Yello, and.. The The.
(Yes, this IS relevant). Anyway, the song was 'Flesh and Bones,' or
at least titled such on that compilation. I have a fondness for that
song, and have seen the compilation on CD only ONCE in 10 years. Does
anybody know a place to find either 1) this compilation, or 2) any
CD with that song on it? I have got audio-cassette format of it, but
can't keep preserving it this way!

BTW - the compilation album is quite good. I like Marc Almond's stuff
immediately after Soft Cell broke up, and his song on the album is
great.

Oh, and my intro neglected any demographics folks don't care to hear
about: I'm 24, male, working as software developer near Raleigh NC.

Never seen any the The bootlegs out there, except the one that came with
Dusk, but that was made in "an official capacity", whatever that means.

Please let us know if you find anything interesting.

Folks,

There are a number of CD bootlegs out there. _Save Me_ by KTS is
probably your best bet. _Perfect Stranger_ is of passable quality, but
the copy I heard was at least 4th generation. There is also _The The Vs.
The World_ which contains an interview spliced with live & studio
tracks. The promo CD single for "Slow Emotion Replay" also contains live
songs from the Sony Studios gig - on top of which the radio released
version of that show is DIFFERENT than the version offered on the _Yeah,
It's A Bootleg_ version by a few songs.

Japanese Versions almost always contain more material, it's the only way
to get Japanese customers to buy the higher priced, local CD's rather
than the cheaper imports. As a whole, the material included has not been
material unavailable in the UK/US.

Yes, the material for _Pornograpy of Despair_ can be culled from B-sides
and early releases. Look for the UK cassette of _Soul Mining_ for a few
along with the early _Infected_ 12" releases. Ivo of 4AD recently tried
to get Matt to re-release POD but after listening to the tapes, Matt
declined to do so, claiming it really wasn't something worth re-releasing
to the public.

BTW - I'm sure there are multiple Smiths discussion groups, could
discussion of Moz & Marr remain there please?

Is _Save Me_ a soundboard recording? KTS is a reliable company, so
I'd assume it's pretty good. What about _Perfect Stranger_? Is that
soundboard? Is the _THE THE Versus The World_ CD you mentioned just the
legit video tape put onto CDs? Sorry for being a pain, I just can't
tolerate the horrible sound quality that comes with so many bootlegs, and
I always try to get soundboard if possible.

Is it just me, or do the live tracks that THE THE did for the Dusk
promo stuff suck? I think that the 1990 tour was awesome---the band
really sound great and very coordinated. But the 1990 stuff is a little
weak, imho, I guess the atmosphere or the intensity isn't there.

Ok, I was sick of trying to get the Soul Mining lyrics in the net. Thanx
to Adam Block for sending me the lyrics after I posted a request in
alt.lyrics. I typed em all in. Ok, I DO have a life, but thought it
would finally be nice to have in a file.

Anyway, here are the lyrics. The only song that wasn't on his copy from
the album sleeve was Perfect. I had to kind of guess at some of the
lyrics. Anyone sees anything wrong, and I'm sure there are some
mistakes, please let me know. I want to see if I can get these added to
the home page too.

Here they are...

Soul Mining - the The

I've Been Waitin' For Tomorrow (All My Life)

I'm hiding in the corner of an overgrown garden -
Covering my body in leaves - and trying not to breath
All my childhood dreams are bursting at the seams
& dangling around my knees
I've been deformed by emotional scars
And the cancer of love has eaten out my hearts
I've been stripped bare & nobody cares -
And all the people I looked up to are no longer there.

"All desires have been denied to put me in this state of mind,
Another year older & what have I done -
My aspirations have shriveled in the sun
I'm crippled by guilt, blinded by science -
I've been waiting for tomorrow - all of my life."

I've been filled with useless information -
Spewed out by papers & radio stations -
I've been hounded by fairweather 'friends'
Sowing the seeds for my discontent.
Life is like a sewer - & I'm trying to wade thru her
I threw in my money & made my wish -
But sleeping boys - catch no fish

My mind has been polluted & my energy diluted

My MIND HAS BEEN POLLUTED!!!

Zeke Manyika - drums
Thomas Leer - synth solo
Camelle G. Hinds - bass guitar
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

This is the Day

Well you didn't wake up this morning -
Because you didn't go to bed.
You were watching the whites of your eyes - turn RED!
The calendar on your wall - is ticking - the days off.
You've been reading some old letters -
You smile & think how much you changed.
All the money in the world - couldn't buy back those days.

You pull back your curtains & the sun burns into your eyes,
You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky.
THIS IS THE DAY - your life will surely change -
THIS IS THE DAY - when things fall into place

You could've done anything...if you'd wanted -
& all your friends & family - think that your lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when your left alone with the memories -
that hold your life together like -
GLUE

Wicks - accordion
Paul Boyle - fiddle
Andy Duncan - drums
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

The Sinking Feeling

All my books lay on the table -
- waitin' to unfold.
I sit & stare at my reflection
- where the darkness dulls my bones.
My head fills like a junk shop -
- in desperate need of repair.
The path of least resistance leads to the
............garbage heap of despair. (I think I'd better get back in bed!)

"I'm just a symptom of the moral decay -
thats gnawing at the heart of the country"

You can't destroy your problems - by destroying yourself,
DEATH - is not the answer for your soul may burn in hell

My memory my fond deceiver -
- - is turning all my past into pain.
While I'm being raped by progress -
Tomorrow's world is here to stay.
(they wouldn't have it any other way)

Jeremy Meek - bass guitar
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

Uncertain Smile

Peeling the skin back from my eyes -
- - I felt surprised -
that the time on the clock was the time -
- - I usually retired
To the place where I cleared my head of you -
But just for today ...I think I'll lie & dream of you.

"I've got you under my skin - where the rain can't get in,
- - But if the sweat pours out - just shout
- - I'll try to swim & pull you out."

A howling wind that blows the litter - as the rain flows -
As street lamps - pour orange colored shapes
thru your windows -
A broken soul - stares from a pair of watering eyes.
Uncertain emotions - force an
- - Uncertain smile.

Jools Holland - piano
Camelle G. Hinds - bass guitar
Andy Duncan - drums
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

The Twilight Hour

Your laying on your bed - & making shadows on the wall
It's almost too hot to move -
Outside your window -
People are driving home from work - for the weekend.
But your waiting for the phone to ring -
Your gonna tell her exactly what you think.

You practice getting your mouth around the words
that explain the way you feel.
You've been scared to show your real self -
In case she doesn't like what she sees -
You've been a "prostitute to humility" -
She's invaded your life & you've got to
Live apart - in order to...survive -

You were emotionally independent -
But starved of affection.
But now you've been trapped by tenderness
& been beaten into "submission"...

It's now way past the hour she usually phones -
& you've decided not to tell her your little joke

Where could she have got to.
Why is she torturing you -

You roll on your side -
& run your fingers through your hair -
Your scared of losing her -
& facing yourself -
A red sky at night may be a shepherds delight,
But your cutting chunks from your heart.
& rubbing the meat into your eyes.
She can't leave you now - you've given up all your friends
Your relying on her - for your independence
She can't leave you here - alone & defenseless
Your relying on her for your independence

YOUR RELYING ON HER

Thomas Leer - synths
Zeke Manyika - drums
Camelle G. Hinds - bass guitar
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

Soul Mining

Your floating down a tunnel - in a little wooden box.
Your cold & your lonely & enveloped in fog.
You've been prized open & left here to die -
You should've trusted your instincts -
- - because they don't tell lies.

"Something always goes wrong when things are going right...
You've swallowed your pride -
- - to quell the pain inside
Someone captured your heart - just like a thief in the night
& squeezed all juice out - until it ran dry"

You've been read like an open book - page by page.
You'll NEVER tell anyone your inner thoughts again
You were taken in - by a heart of fools gold.
Now your drifting in circles -
In the depths of your soul!!!

Andy Duncan - drums
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

Giant

The sun is high & I'm surrounded by sand
For as far as my eyes can see -
I'm strapped into a rockin' chair -
With a blanket over my knees -
'I' - am a stranger to myself -
- - & nobody knows I'm here -
When I looked into my eyes -
It wasn't myself I'd seen -
But who I've tried to be

I'm thinking of things I'd hoped to forget.
I'm choking to death in a sun that never sets.
I clogged up my mind with perpetual greed
& turned all of my friends into enemies.
& now the past has returned to haunt me.

I'm scared of god - & scared of hell
& I'm caving in upon myself -
How can anyone - know me -
When I don't even know myself

Zeke Manyika - drums
Thomas Leer - bass synth
Camelle G. Hinds - bass guitar
Frank Want- sticks
Manyika, Hardiman, Johnson - chant
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

Perfect

It's a chilly English winter and solitude is never easy to maintain -
Except when it rains
So I hangin into small beneath my empty eyes
And go out for a walk -
The wet morning sun reflects off the paving stones -
While the little dark clouds that set off in the distance

"Oh what a perfect day...
To think about my city.
My feet are firmly screwed to the floor
What is there to fear from such a regular world?"

Passing by a cemetery I think of all the little hopes and dreams that...
Lie there lifeless and unfulfilled beneath the sun.
I see an old man fingering his perishing flesh,
He tells himself he was a good man and did good things.
Amused and confused by life's little ironies he -
Swallows his bottle of distilled damnation.

People trot around wearing seeing eyes,
Their looking for something that doesn't exist.
The world we once knew is being eaten up by rust.
No one has time for the past but still in god they trust.
The future is now, but its all going wrong.
Bodies true for nothing but its for nothing they belong.
People say their prayers and some work hard.
If you give em all your money they'll give you their hearts.
This town is getting like a ghost town.
Its getting like hell.

I swear I have seen it listed. My instinctive guess is that Hanky Panky
is probably the same thing. Having heard rumor about Marrs not being
on the 'new' release, makes it more likely IMO. Not having my The stuff
on hand, allow me to go home and look up tonight, I think I have the
source of that information (regarding The The Play Hank) there.

I'm not crazy, I swear I saw it!!! :)

Right from the liner notes of "Solitude":

harmonica: Jim Fitting
electric guitar: Keith Joyner
Hammond organ : D.C. Collard
bass : Jared Nickerson
drums : Andy Kubiszewski

Don't worry Aaron, you're not crazy. "The The Play Hank" is listed in the
liner notes on _Dusk_. But, I believe it was listed with a 1993 release
date, even though _Dusk_ came out in 82. So, it appears that this has been
a project that Matt has wanted to do for a while, but just got around to
doing. I still wish I knew why Marr isn't on it.

Also, does anyone have the names of the touring band from the last tour? I
have a sketchy memory as to some names: the harmonica player was definitely
Jim Fitting, the guitarists last name was Joyner(?), the drummer's first
name was Andy(?), etc. Can anyone supply better info?

In addition to the last question, why was the band not the same as the album
band? I know Johnny Marr stayed in the UK for family reasons, but where was
everyone else?

I saw THE THE on Sept 18th 1993 (presumably the Dusk tour) as an
opening act for Depeche Mode, and Johnny Marr was definately the
guitarist that was on stage. Why do you say that he was in England? I
know that his wife (Angie?) recently gave birth to the couple's first
child. Hmmm...

Matt has tried to distance himself from this, as far as possible!

He has stated he was working in the studio when they made their stuff, and
just lent a hand. This was before Matt & the The's success. Since then, the
Gadgets' stuff we re-released, touting Matt's involvement. Matt stated in
interviews that he felt used. His involvement with them was VERY MINIMUL(sp?)

Where did you see them??? I saw them twice that year. Once on the TRUE

I saw THE THE on Sept. 18th, 1993 at the Spectum in Philly. I'm sure
that Johnny Marr was the guitarist--it looked exactly like Johnny,
mannerisms and all.

Be careful, there is another Matt Johnson out there. I've always thought
that the "other" MJ was a local Boston artist, but I could be wrong. Anyway,
the "other" MJ is a sort of jazz/new age pianist. Try not to find out
the hard way ;)

With that in mind, are you sure that this CD with Deux Filles is the real
Matt Johnson. (Dislaimer: the previous statement does not, nor does it intend
to, question the existence of the other Matt Johnson. He is allowed to
live his life of religious fulfillment as he sees fit. He just better not
confuse me into buying anything of his)

First of all, the cd that i'm talking about had a sticker on it that
said something to the effect of "rare.....from matt johnson of the THE"
and I found the latest copy on CDNOW.com. it was listed under additional
stuff "by the artist". Seems to me that this is OUR Matt!
Also, got the promo for "i saw the light". Great song, but the rest...

Well, if you've already ordered it (the Deux Filles CD) I won't be able
to suggest that you don't. :)

Deux Filles are: Gemini Forque and Claudine Coule.
With musical contributions from: Anthony Ainley, Deborah Diez de Artacoz,
Cressida Gill, Annie Hogan, Matt Johnson, John Porter, Steve Shirlock.
Album Recorded in Soho and Le Harvre Spring 1982.

The CD booklet has excerpts from album reviews. One says:
"With numerous friends, including those versatile Mamba's Matt Johnson
and Annie Hogan, the girls have built an insular solitude which breathes
calm and order." There is also a clipping of an interview with Gemini
and Claudine in which they mention seeing The The at the Marquee.

In short, I don't think Matt's contribution to this album amounts to
much, if anything, that you'd be able to pick out. I think the disc is
passable, but I also don't feel that it would appeal to fans of Matt.

BTW, for anybody who recognises the name Anthony Ainley listed under
contributions...they sampled some of his chanting (as Kalid) from
_Time-Flight_ for one song. If you don't know who he, don't worry, it's
not important.

Ah. So then, anyone know what this is?

Actually, I rather enjoy the acoustic numbers. I like the fact that Matt
isn't afraid to shift gears into something that isn't really expected. I
guess the one thing we can expect from him is the unexpected.

Was Matt Johnson one of the Mambas that played with Marc Almond??
That must have been between Soul Mining and Infected (of course,
there was PLENTY of time between them) ?? As a fan of Marc Almond's
older stuff, that might be just the bit to convince me to buy one
of those old Mamba CDs I see every so often. I apologize if this is
common knowledge, but since this list is < 1month old I can't IMAGINE
I missed out on something this obscure already.

Thanks for any info,

Hey the The fans!

I'm new to the list, and I was wondering if there is anyone
out there that knows anything about whether Matt Johnson and the
rest of the group is back in the studio now. I heard a rumor that
the group was planning on going back in the studio after the
release of Hanky Panky, but I have no idea of when. While I am on
the subject, do you know when the next album is tenatively set to
be released? I know my questions are somewhat hard to answer, but
any rumors you might have would be great. Actually, I need to
hear the entire Hanky Panky album first. Has it (Hanky Panky) been released
in the states yet? Well, that's probably not all of the questions
I have to ask, but you'll hear from me in the future. BTW, thanks
for the Soul Mining lyrics!

I saw the Light entered the UK singles chart at number 31 yesterday,
the video was seen for the first time on the Saturday morning Chart
Show.
It was filmed in New York on top of the Chrysler Building. Matt did
all the stunts himself as the stuntman hired was afraid of heights!

Excellent video but Matt did look like he was wearing lipstick and
eyeshadow and he had also shaved his head. It could have just been
bad light I suppose.

Also a note in the CD section at HMV also says the album is out in
the UK on February 14th.

Soul Mining - the The

I've Been Waitin' For Tomorrow (All My Life)

I'm hiding in the corner of an overgrown garden -
Covering my body in leaves - and trying not to breath
All my childhood dreams are bursting at the seams
& dangling around my knees
I've been deformed by emotional scars
And the cancer of love has eaten out my hearts
I've been stripped bare & nobody cares -
And all the people I looked up to are no longer there.

"All desires have been denied to put me in this state of mind,
Another year older & what have I done -
My aspirations have shriveled in the sun
I'm crippled by guilt, blinded by science -
I've been waiting for tomorrow - all of my life."

I've been filled with useless information -
Spewed out by papers & radio stations -
I've been hounded by fairweather 'friends'
Sowing the seeds for my discontent.
Life is like a sewer - & I'm trying to wade thru her
I threw in my money & made my wish -
But sleeping boys - catch no fish

My mind has been polluted & my energy diluted

My MIND HAS BEEN POLLUTED!!!

Zeke Manyika - drums
Thomas Leer - synth solo
Camelle G. Hinds - bass guitar
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

This is the Day

Well you didn't wake up this morning -
Because you didn't go to bed.
You were watching the whites of your eyes - turn RED!
The calendar on your wall - is ticking - the days off.
You've been reading some old letters -
You smile & think how much you changed.
All the money in the world - couldn't buy back those days.

You pull back your curtains & the sun burns into your eyes,
You watch a plane flying across a clear blue sky.
THIS IS THE DAY - your life will surely change -
THIS IS THE DAY - when things fall into place

You could've done anything...if you'd wanted -
& all your friends & family - think that your lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when your left alone with the memories -
that hold your life together like -
GLUE

Wicks - accordion
Paul Boyle - fiddle
Andy Duncan - drums
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

The Sinking Feeling

All my books lay on the table -
- waitin' to unfold.
I sit & stare at my reflection
- where the darkness dulls my bones.
My head fills like a junk shop -
- in desperate need of repair.
The path of least resistance leads to the
............garbage heap of despair. (I think I'd better get back in bed!)

"I'm just a symptom of the moral decay -
thats gnawing at the heart of the country"

You can't destroy your problems - by destroying yourself,
DEATH - is not the answer for your soul may burn in hell

My memory my fond deceiver -
- - is turning all my past into pain.
While I'm being raped by progress -
Tomorrow's world is here to stay.
(they wouldn't have it any other way)

Jeremy Meek - bass guitar
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

Uncertain Smile

Peeling the skin back from my eyes -
- - I felt surprised -
that the time on the clock was the time -
- - I usually retired
To the place where I cleared my head of you -
But just for today ...I think I'll lie & dream of you.

"I've got you under my skin - where the rain can't get in,
- - But if the sweat pours out - just shout
- - I'll try to swim & pull you out."

A howling wind that blows the litter - as the rain flows -
As street lamps - pour orange colored shapes
thru your windows -
A broken soul - stares from a pair of watering eyes.
Uncertain emotions - force an
- - Uncertain smile.

Jools Holland - piano
Camelle G. Hinds - bass guitar
Andy Duncan - drums
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

The Twilight Hour

Your laying on your bed - & making shadows on the wall
It's almost too hot to move -
Outside your window -
People are driving home from work - for the weekend.
But your waiting for the phone to ring -
Your gonna tell her exactly what you think.

You practice getting your mouth around the words
that explain the way you feel.
You've been scared to show your real self -
In case she doesn't like what she sees -
You've been a "prostitute to humility" -
She's invaded your life & you've got to
Live apart - in order to...survive -

You were emotionally independent -
But starved of affection.
But now you've been trapped by tenderness
& been beaten into "submission"...

It's now way past the hour she usually phones -
& you've decided not to tell her your little joke

Where could she have got to.
Why is she torturing you -

You roll on your side -
& run your fingers through your hair -
Your scared of losing her -
& facing yourself -
A red sky at night may be a shepherds delight,
But your cutting chunks from your heart.
& rubbing the meat into your eyes.
She can't leave you now - you've given up all your friends
Your relying on her - for your independence
She can't leave you here - alone & defenseless
Your relying on her for your independence

YOUR RELYING ON HER

Thomas Leer - synths
Zeke Manyika - drums
Camelle G. Hinds - bass guitar
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

Soul Mining

Your floating down a tunnel - in a little wooden box.
Your cold & your lonely & enveloped in fog.
You've been prized open & left here to die -
You should've trusted your instincts -
- - because they don't tell lies.

"Something always goes wrong when things are going right...
You've swallowed your pride -
- - to quell the pain inside
Someone captured your heart - just like a thief in the night
& squeezed all juice out - until it ran dry"

You've been read like an open book - page by page.
You'll NEVER tell anyone your inner thoughts again
You were taken in - by a heart of fools gold.
Now your drifting in circles -
In the depths of your soul!!!

Andy Duncan - drums
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

Giant

The sun is high & I'm surrounded by sand
For as far as my eyes can see -
I'm strapped into a rockin' chair -
With a blanket over my knees -
'I' - am a stranger to myself -
- - & nobody knows I'm here -
When I looked into my eyes -
It wasn't myself I'd seen -
But who I've tried to be

I'm thinking of things I'd hoped to forget.
I'm choking to death in a sun that never sets.
I clogged up my mind with perpetual greed
& turned all of my friends into enemies.
& now the past has returned to haunt me.

I'm scared of god - & scared of hell
& I'm caving in upon myself -
How can anyone - know me -
When I don't even know myself

Thomas Leer - bass synth
Camelle G. Hinds - bass guitar
Frank Want- sticks
Manyika, Hardiman, Johnson - chant
Matt Johnson - synths, instruments, percussion, vocals

Perfect

It's a chilly English winter and solitude is never easy to maintain -
Except when it rains

So I hangin into small beneath my empty eyes
>> So I hang an empty smile beneath my empty eyes...

And go out for a walk -
The wet morning sun reflects off the paving stones -

While the little dark clouds that set off in the distance
>> While a little dog barks its head off in the distance

"Oh what a perfect day...
To think about my city.
My feet are firmly screwed to the floor
What is there to fear from such a regular world?"

Passing by a cemetery I think of all the little hopes and dreams that...
Lie there lifeless and unfulfilled beneath the sun.
I see an old man fingering his perishing flesh,
He tells himself he was a good man and did good things.
Amused and confused by life's little ironies he -
Swallows his bottle of distilled damnation.

People trot around wearing seeing eyes,
>>People trot around with unseeing eyes,

Their looking for something that doesn't exist.
The world we once knew is being eaten up by rust.
No one has time for the past but still in god they trust.
The future is now, but its all going wrong.

Bodies true for nothing but its for nothing they belong.
>>Bodies kill for nothing but its to nothing [that] they belong.

People say their prayers and some work hard.
If you give em all your money they'll give you their hearts.
This town is getting like a ghost town.
Its getting like hell.

Stumbled across an interview with Matt Johnson on the music channel
VH1 last night and whilst he was there to promote 'Hanky Panky' he
did say that he was currently in the studio working on his *normal*
stuff and the album was called Gunsluts. No mention of a release date
though.

He performed two songs live in the studio (hastily taped) and they
were 'Your Cheatin Heart' and 'Weary Hearts are Waitin' (or something
like that).

I dont know about you lot but i'm not sure this sort of stuff appeals
to me, he says he is going to do other tribute albums, the next one
being Robert Johnson (?)

Other things I remember about the interview...Johnny Marr is no
longer in the band, infact he has an all American band and indeed now
lives in New York.

Hi there,
You couldn`t imagine how much I was waiting for the new video to be shown
because this was the first chance for me to hear the new song.
After I saw I can say it`s very good, but a little bit short. My only
fear about the new LP is that because the lyrics weren`t wrirren by Matt
they won`t be that powerful and mind blowing. What do you think about this?
This Matt dude is quite brave if he did the whole video himself instead using
stuntmen.
Bye for now

Hi there,
You couldn`t imagine how much I was waiting for the new video to be shown
because this was the first chance for me to hear the new song.
After I saw I can say it`s very good, but a little bit short. My only
fear about the new LP is that because the lyrics weren`t wrirren by Matt
they won`t be that powerful and mind blowing. What do you think about this?
This Matt dude is quite brave if he did the whole video himself instead using
stuntmen.
Bye for now
Peter

That would be awesome! Robert Johnson, though I'd hate to pigeonhole
him, was a great bluesman. MJ could kick ass with RJ's material.
Considering the excellent cover of Ellington's 'Solitude' he did,
I'm psyched for other covers of standards/non-standards.

Too bad about Marr, but he wasn't my interest in the band anyway;
he has a good sound, but Matt writes fantastic words/music and will
survive certainly.

Where have people seen the video for the new single? I don't watch
much MTV, since they never seem to show videos anymore, but if VH1
were showing it with any frequency it'd be worth my lingering there.

Well, nobody can deny the importance of RJ....at the very least, he was
king of the Delta blues. And certainly Matt could do some interesting
covers of his songs. I'm smiling just thinking about him doing "Hellhound
on My Trail." :)

On the other hand, I'm happy to hear that a new album of originals is on
the way. It seems like it's been years since "Dusk" came out. I think
we're all ready for more.

I really can't say I'm surprised about this. I know Marr doesn't like
being relegated to a sideman, and frankly, I think Matt likes to exercise
firm control over the band's songwriting. I hope Johnny can find a place
where he made as much of a musical impact as in the Smiths days.

The news today was both exciting and disappointing. I am sooo
happy to have to rumors of new music in the future confirmed and
that there might be a Robert Johnson tribute in the works even
further down the road. What disappointed me was the news of
Marr's departure. Currently my favorite the The song is Jealousy
of Youth, which has a prominent Smith's influence likely from
Marr. He'll be missed by me, but I can't really blame the guy. I
was surprised that he went from one egotist to another in the
first place. I love Matt Johnson's work to death, but I can't deny
his conceited nature. Best of luck to Marr, he's already earned
$15 of my money! Look forward to more info! Talk to everyone
later!

Mark
