There's a soccer player in England called Terry Phelan (plays for Chelsea
Football club incidentally) who I've always felt looked not dissimilar to
ol' Matt.... Any other (UK) subscribers see the familiarity??

I've been getting email from Johnny Marr lately--the new electronic album is
done and lookin good. Word has it that Marr was gonna start back with the The
after this. That Matt was waiting on him. I don't have the nerve to ask.
Anyone have news?

Belated reply:
I was reading an interview there, with Johnny and the overall tone
regarding future projects seemed to suggest that, while he's collaborated
with artists in the past, he seems to have found a semi-long term partner
(if that's possible) with yer man from Electronic. He said, he's
particularly taken with the fact that the singer of Electronic (whose name
escapes me... Bernard Summers, methinks) is first and foremost a musician
and the lyrics are secondary.... which may perhaps explain the general poor
quality of lyrics (IMHO)..well, in relation to The the anyway....

FYI.
Question: Johnny, will you ever be joining Morrissey for a reunion tour with
the Smiths. Please say yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Elctrnic: Sure Boris, do you see any quiffs about?
The session went pretty well (besides the annoying "EMBODY123" person). I
have to admit that I came away pretty happy cause they answered a lot of my
questions. Kinda rare for those sessions.
The full text of the session can be found on my web site(look under

I think this about sums-up the activity on this list. I'm certain,
somebody must have a decent take on the human condition, or perhaps a
personalized perspective on MJ's lyrical value (i.e. would you rather a
bit of fish-n-chips or a wrenching bout with lust?). I've said my bit in
the past, let's hear something non-contrived or cliche.

Rather than talking about MJ's lyrics, how about a discussion on his
instrumental work. Does anyone chill out to Hot Ice or Arctic Twilight' ?
And what about the others. Would anyone consider them to be just fillers?
I'd like to know what you think.

I consider "Lip Tripping" on Volume a filler if there ever was,
basically this is just an outtake, no lyrics just a repetive track.
MJ talks before the track, but nothing really ever happens in the tune.
As for Artctic Twilight, I enjoy this tune immensely...a nifty little
composition.

A good friend of mine, who is originally from Toronto but moved to London
last year, was visiting last week and was out for dinner in one of Toronto's
trendiest areas last Thursday. Besides he and his two friends, the only
other people in the restaurant were Johnny Marr and Bernard Sumner. My
buddy is the second biggest the The fan I know, and is also a huge fan of
all of Johnny Marr's work. However, his two companions managed to talk him
out of going over and talking to them (mainly by saying he was over 30, and
talking to rock stars was a teenager kinda thing). So, instead of up to
date info on Johnny's plans with Matt (I could give a sh*t what else Marr's
doing), we have nothing. If its any consolation, I have ridiculed my buddy
over this, and will not let him forget it for many months.
Amused and confused by life's little ironies ...

Why don't I start with a greeting from Canada ... HI! :) And I'm
sorry you had to get flamed on your first post.
> (by the way, are you aware that your ancestors -the Vikings- pilaged my

And Mr. O'Brien,
Let me just say that our friend form Norway had about as much to
say about his birth as you did about yours, thus he (and you) cannot be
blamed for the sins of the fathers. If you do honestly believe what you
said then we're probably all fucked.
Being a Heinz 57 myself I'm really screwed then... Let's see; my
Irish blood hates my Norwegian blood for raping the Irish women and stealing
the Irish food. My Scottish side hates my English side for being brought
under English rule. The small bit of me that is native hates all of the
above for taking over the once indigenous Canada. And having a bit of
German (and being 6 feet tall with blonde hair and blue eyes) I'm royally
screwed even though I believe in global unity and equality. And while all
this is happening my Canadian heritage is clashing with my American
ancestry because the US seems to be imposing their culture on Canada.
See how fucked up this whole train of thought can be!?
I'm not the one to tell
This whole world how to get along
I only know that peace will come
When all our hate is gone"

It *is* sad what folks regard as a flame these days. BTW, though,
have you considered that since the Vikings ran around raping and
forcibly marrying most of Northern and Western Europe, the likes of
you and I probably have more Viking blood in use than our good friend
Truls? Just a thought....
Anyway, while we're on the subject of slagging countries, it's time
to send things back in the Irish direction. Here's a joke my Irish
grandfather loved to tell -
Q: Why did the English invent the wheelbarrow?
A: To teach the Irish to walk on their hind legs.
and one I heard just the other night, but loved -
Q: What's the Irish definition of a homosexual?
A: A man who likes women better than whiskey.
I myself am mostly French, some Cajun, an eighth Irish, and god alone
knows what else. My grandma's uncles and aunts ate each other in the
Donner Party. So if anyone's got any good shots, please feel free.

Hmmmm, yes, very amusing. Although you did miss out on the ultimate one:
Q: Why was Jesus an Irish man?
A: Because he lived with his Mother till he was thirty...and always hung
around with the lads.

Unfortunately, Cajun jokes don't figure in my rather limited and lame catalogue.

Heck, I thought the original message was funny too. If you can't take a
little vinegar in your diet then I doubt your listening to the right band.

I've just heard the new Electronic album. It's Ok I guess, but it doesn't seem
to hit me. The brief paragraph in the sleeve seems to be a synopsis of our time
but the lyrical content of the album doen't seem to concur with the
previously expressed ideals. It ends up being like a mountain eroded by a
stream. The ideas once strong and proud and well thought out are now worn
down and turned into regurgitated drivel. Phil Spectre meets New Order, over
produced refined too much, like white sugar. I think I'd rather listen to
Massive Attack's Karma Coma.
This scares me, because I fear the next the The album will or might be the same.
Matt has never failed to deliver thought provoking lyrical content. He has
only disappointed me once (Hanky Panky.) What can you (or he)say about this
soulless time. Nothing can shock, a continual state of numbness permiates

about nothing and no one. There is a emptyness now, the feeling we have lost

Greetings all.
Firstly, Dan k, what's written on the sleeve notes inside the electronic album?
It's a little hard to find it where I am.
And here's a little story from a few years ago...
Staffordshire University, November '93. Friday night 'Alternative' disco, myself
and my friend novice dj's, going through the middle part of our set, quite drunk
, our brains unable to decide what next to play and I see my Soul Mining record
staring at me. I quickly whack it on just as 'just like heaven' ends. The dance
floor promptly clears. I'm thinking 'oh sh*t!' The place is dark and many people
look to the bar longingly. One boy then comes on to dance by himself roughly at
the same time as a girl at the other side. They see each other and slowly come
together and start doing some dance reminiscent of ballroom dancing. Sounds
strange but it just looked beautiful at the time. I look around and everyone
else has stopped what they were doing and are now watching these two people. The
lights are only shining on them. Surreal. Of course everything is back to normal
by the next song... It just reminded me a bit of that moment in 'The Fisher
King' when everyone in New York train station stop, ballroom dance for a bit,
and then continue with life again...
And thirdly, A Big Public Thankyou to Chris (Psbthethe@aol.com) for the music
tape!
I'd like to say quite a bit about religion, but maybe later, 'coz at the moment
my mind thinks of things like tolerance, peace, being a good person, etc, in
their simplest terms. That way I dont get confused and I remain happy. I dont
think people are religious who go through all the motions dictated by what books
say (that may or may not have been changed over the generations) and yet dont
practise what they preach or have been preached. Got to get that bus now.
Regards to all,
Raxit

This is probably the best post I have seen on this list since I've gotten
here... and what I thought the The was about, questioning life (of which
I've done a lot since I lost a good portion of my worldly goods in a
flood) and where its seems to be going. I would challenge anyone to go
deep into their soul, and am saddened that so few are introspective
enough to go there, prefering to use lyrics as a substitute, as opposed
to a guide, for introspection.
However, I would ask one question... why do we so easily discard religion
as an answer? Of course there have been major problems with all
religions, but in the past it has provided at least an entry to the
spirituality so devoid in our societies.
Once again, thanks for the post Rob,

cuz that's how the forces of darkness/
have repressed the spirit of man...
there is a _vast_ difference between "spirituality" and
"religion," as religion is widely practiced and understood
in america. and while, as mr. stewart has observed,
there certainly are some religions and churches which
seek to help their parishioners into a spiritual understanding,
these seem fewer and farther inbetween as we hurtle toward
the new millenium.
where is the beauty? where is the truth? i have yet to
find either quality within the walls of religion.
because you couldnt have religion without walls,
and walls more often than not are used to divide
us from one another, as opposed to protecting us
from harm.
those are the rules of religion: and also the laws of
the land.
so i look to beauty, to myself, to my loved ones,
and to the planet itself, and to art for that which i need
to nourish my spirit.
but of course, there are many paths...

Subject: the The goes Real Audio... but I NEED RARE STUFF to put on the

Hello -
I have begun making Real Audio files of all the The songs... for my
web site (which is in the process of being updated now). It is
moving from http://www.wpi.edu/~thethe/thethe/thethe.html to
http://bcx.ind.wpi.edu/the_The
So far I have Real Audio-ed:
o Mind Bomb (entire album),
o Hanky Panky (entire album),
o Soul Mining (entire album),
o Infected (entire album),
o a Jealous of Youth single.
And will soon Real Audio (next day or two):
o Burning Blue Soul
o Hot Ice
o Dusk (I have to go out and buy the CD, it's so much easier to Real
Audio things from CD)
HELP!!!!!!!
What I really need is the rare stuff... I mean all of the
above is great and wonderful... but the best thing of all would be if
I could put the pseudo Pornography of Despair and other (less
early) stuff, so everybody could have a listen. Please, please...
help me on this.
Could someone please send me ASAP the Pornography of Despair
pseudo-tape that was going around a while back... and/or other
RARE-ish stuff.
The web site is not updated or moved yet, it will be by week's end.
I'm still finishing making up new icons and stuff. So, by Friday it
will be updated and moved, and will include all of the Real Audio
files I mentioned above.
For those of you that don't know, Real Audio is basically a sound
format, as JPEG is to GIF, Real Audio is to WAV/AU (a very rough
approximation of an explanation). It heavily compresses and
approximates WAV or AU files so that they can be passed along over
the Internet with minimum delay and pain. For example, your average
5 minute the The song (mixed channels (mono)) is 35 MB as a WAV file,
which would take you a very damn long time to download, eh?
But, as a Real Audio file, that same song is 750 KB. Now, the sound
quality suffers terribly... it is probably not unlike AM radio
quality when the station is immersed in a light fog bank... but,
this is actually a sort of good thing. If the sound quality were
perfect, then Sony and them would probably get pissed at people
passing around audio files of CD tracks, since you wouldn't have to
buy the album to get the music... but, since the sound quality is so
uncrystal clear, they're not going to lose any money. You need a
Real Audio player (available free for every platform under the sun) to
listen to the Real Audio files.
Anyway... thanks... Please send me whatever you can... and as soon as
you can. I can send you blank tapes or whatever in exchange...

In a recent posting, I noticed mention of tapes that were 'floating around'
awhile ago - specifically Pornography Of Despair. Being a new addition to
the world of the Internet, and the Infected newsgroup, I missed those
conversations and/or transactions. Being a long time the The fan, I would
be eternally grateful to anyone who would be willing to make me a copy of
Pornography Of Despair, or any other Matt rarities (I've never heard of Hot
Ice either). Please contact me personally, and we can make the arrangements
- I will pay for the tape/postage/whatever.
Thanks,
