I don't get it. It seems to me that THE used A LOT of guitars in Dusk.
It's a great album (of course), and I don't care if he uses tin cans and
a rubber band to make incredible music, but I don't see Johnson's use of
lots of guitars as being a real change to his later stuff. Hankey has
all guitar and piano...not really a keyboard sound in the album. Maybe
I'm just missing something...

Yea, but I consider that piano, not keyboard. Maybe I just misunderstood
what you meant by keyboard. My mistake. I was thinking Matt goes
Depeche Mode or something...maybe not.

By the way, does anybody know what's happening with that compilation

I've never even talked to anyone who's heard it. I'm starting to suspect it's
not that good, or it would have been released by now.

Just saw the post about the comp. tape...

A LONG time ago I posted to the list offering a tape with
the The rarities, b-sides, and Matt side projects. The material
on these (3-4) tapes was a composite of my own collection, Dave Hirsch's
(thanks again), and a song or two from other people. I went to great
lengths to try and keep the sound quality high, and only charged
the rather large # of people who requested copies (and multiple copies)
for materials involved (shipping, tapes). I also requested that the
people who got these tapes e-mail me back with their opinions of how it
all turned out (quality, nice tape sleeves). Only a very few mailed
me back (and after a number of people DEMANDED that their tapes
be in the mail in like 24 hours!). I am willing to make more copies,
just email me.
A
^s far as some people not getting their tapes or emailed back from me,
I made
^THREE different distribution lists to handle the, at times,
rather complex requests. One was for people who showed an initial
interest to my first message. One was for people who asked after that
time to receive tapes. The third one was for people who did not
respond to the above two, or, who I still needed addresses for.
This does not includee the large # of people that I emailed
personally. So, if you didn't get tapes......or you didn't
get emailed back......you need to.....learn to read or take some
initiative of your own. To the person who mailed the list
with this question: I KNOW you are on the various lists. You've
gotten my mail. So, send me your address and $ (I have stopped
sending tapes before getting the $ because I've already been
dicked once) and you'll get some great tapes!

Thank you,

Hi,
This is my first foray into the The The mailing list and I have just
one thing to say :
How the f*** did Matt pick up the bottle to SIT on the 'Gargoyles'
on the Chyristler Building AND sing WHILE in makeup IN a cowboy suit
AFTER an appendix operation.
I fainted just watching it.....
Pity about the album sleeve though. Why wasn't a drawing used as for
all the other albums? It looks like a last minute attempt, but maybe
that's what it was meant to be, raw, earthy, like the album. No-one
knows how Matt's mind works.
Can't wait for the new song ("Darkness Falls") though if it's not
released as a single, I'll have to get the album. Does anyone know
who else is on it??
Anyway, bye for now..........

A while ago I bought Detour magazine for the cover story about Tim Roth and
pretty much ignored all the other pages. However, I was just leafing through
it and came across a one-page interview with your favorite and mine, Matt
Johnson. It's in the April issue, is written by Allison Diamond, and is
called "Gun Crazy." Just for kicks, I thought I would reproduce the interview
here for those who haven't seen it--this issue is the first time I have ever
even seen this magazine, so who knows about the rest of you...

GUN CRAZY
Hanky Panky, The The creator Matt Johnson's latest musical stroke,
is a fierce
and sultry tribute to Hank Williams, and a bit of a departure for a man
probably best known for moodier alternative rock. In conversation, the sprightlyand biting Johnson explains his musical choices, working methods, and describes
his fantasy band: a barbershop quartet with Hank, Robert Johnson, and John
Lennon. "We would have a drink and a chat, and see what came up." A heavy
testosterone band, I observe. "No, because we are all sensitive guys," he says.

AD: Did you decide to do a tribute album and pick Hank Williams, or did you
always love Hank and thought it would be cool to record his music?

MJ: It was Hank Williams. I was originally just going to do an EP, one of Hank
and one of Robert Johnson. Incidentally, Robert Johnson is going to be next.
I'm alsodoing a Beatles one as well, "The The Meets the Beatles." The Robert
Johnson one is just called "Johnson," but that will come out after my next
album, "Gun Sluts."

AD: Are you going to keep the cigarette in his mouth?

MJ: I gave up smoking. Oh? Robert Johnson's?

AD: Do you know about the stamp?

MJ: There are only two photographs I've ever seen. There's the one where he's
goton a suit and hat, and the other one where he's got the cigarette in his
mouth.

AD: And that one was made into a stamp, only they faded out the cigarette.

MJ: Oh, I didn't know that. That's terrible. I heard a horrible story that when
the Rolling Stones made their last video, they actually phoned up MTV and
asked permission for Keith to have a cigarette hanging out of his mouth while
he played. And MTV said, "Well, we normally don't play videos that feature
alcohol or cigarettes, but since you're the Rolling Stones, it's OK." I think
that's sick.

AD: Do you think your fans listen to Hank?

MJ:I usually do what I want to do and hopefully they like it. Once you start
wandering into that territory you become a musical version of McDonald's. We've
really altered the music and it sounds like a The The album. A lot of people
didn't know it was a cover album. The subject matter isn't that far away from
what I write about, which is probably why I was drawn to Hank Williams. I'm
not a big fan of country, per se. I admire Hank Williams, I think he stood
slightly beyond country music in the way that Bob Marley did with reggae. I
think of Hank Williams as being a confessional songwriter, raw and dark.

AD: How was recording his songs different from recording your own?

MJ: Not very different at all. We did the pre-production in Spain. The keyboard
player and myself rearranged the music. We started with the originals--kept them
in the same key, tempo, and structure--then we changed the key to suit my
voice, and then played with the tempo and structure, and re-wrote the music.
The only condition was not to touch the lyrics.

AD: When you say you rewrote the music, what exactly do you mean?

MJ: Have you ever heard the original version of "I Saw the Light"?

AD: You know, I didn't recognize a lot of the songs, but I do remember "There's
a Tear in my Beer."

MJ: That one we've kept the melody the same, along with "Your Cheatin' Heart"
and "Weary Blues from Waitin'." But with "Long Gone Daddy," "Honky-Tonkin',"
and "I Saw the Light," the music was changed.

AD: "I Saw the Light" reminds me of "Cold Turkey."

MJ: Oh does it? That's funny, someone else said that it was like the Plastic
Ono Band. That's a compliment, because that's the direction I wanted to go in,
quite raw and edgy. If you hear the original, you'll see what I mean. His
melody for instance--[Matt begins to sing]--sort of has a barn dance feel to it.Lyrically, though, it's quite different. We checked with the publishers, Acuff-
Rose; I said I wanted to rewrite the music to a lot of the songs. They said
they didn't mind as long as I didn't try and claim credit. I didn't do it for
the money, I love his songs and it gives me a rest from writing lyrics. Whereas
in the past, I take like three years between albums. It's very pleasurable
doing these records, because it doesn't matter if nobody buys it or nobody
likes it. I'm doing it for myself.

AD: Although your record company might have something to say about that...

MJ: Well...that's their problem.

AD: You seem to have a certain amount of freedom on your label.

MJ: Yeah, I have a very good relationship with the record company; they seem
to respect my judgments and let me do pretty much what I want.

AD: Do you ever go back and listen to your albums?

MJ: Sometimes. Funny enough, the times I most often listen to them would be
before I'm working on a new album. I just like to check back to be sure I'm
not making similar mistakes or to see sonically how it compares to the
previous one. I don't really sit around and listen to them. I'm proud of them,
but that's a bit narcissistic. When I'm working on new stuff, I pretty much
exclusively listen to what I'm working on. I don't really listen to a lot of
contemporary stuff. To be quite honest, I like having silence, particularly
living in New York. There's so much garbage around, I think the human nervous
system is quite sensitive. I think you should just give yourself a break.

AD: I'm thinking out loud: If someone would partake of a drug while listening
to your music, what would the drug of choice be?

MJ: I think it would be mescaline, maybe with a little dab of opium and a
crystal meth chaser.

AD: And how would all this be ingested?

MJ: I suppose there would be a small tablet of mescaline, and the opium would
be heated, and the vapor would just fill the room so they'd breathe it in. And
maybe a little bong; everyone would be lying around naked with candles and
incense--opium incense. They would have a little line of crystal meth, just for
the faster songs.

AD: OK. Now, let's pretend, you're listening to the radio and you're having
sex, and one of your songs comes on. What would you do?

MJ: Turn it louder. I would continue even more intensely!

AD: What music do you listen to during sex?

MJ: I don't actually. I like silence...and human sounds.

Can anyone clear somthing up for me.
As far as i am aware 'Absolute Liberation" (as on the This is the day 7"
gatefold) is only one song.
There is not a Absolute Lib 1 and Absolute Lib 2, This misconception
comes from the 2 sets of lyrics in the TheThe Infected Book.
The association between the 2 is that on the song Absolute liberation
there are 2 vocal styles by matt, one singing normally and the other
thru a distorter.
Absolute lib 1 is the bits where he sings normal
absolute lib 2 is the bits where he sings thru the distortion mic

This is what I belive. Is it correct? can you prove otherwise?

the original release of soul mining was missing perfect. it ended at giant.
then it was released with an extra 12", featuring perfect and two other
tracks, fruit of the heart and soup of mixed emotions. both of those had a
sound more in common with the earlier recordings, as opposed to the more
slick soul mining sound. then perfect was included.

as far as the bonus tracks on the brit cassette, they have all shown up as
b-sides to the early 12"s, like perfect, uncertain smile, and others.

nobody buy the gary young cd (ex-pavement). worst thing i have heard in
years...

Hi, this is my first post to the group...:)
anyway, Soul Mining is probably my favourite the The album...and my
favourite song has to be Perfect. I have heard, however that this is one
of the tracks that was left off the original release. The thing is, I
remember this song from the radio long ago...was it originally released
as a b side to a single? (I am only a recent fan, as you could probably

If you like the BBS album, try finding the Another Boy Drowning live
version...either on the Vs. the World Video or on the Solitude or
(originally) the Shades of Blues EP.
I find it much better and more similar to MJ's soul mining "slicker"
(Thanks Hirshdave) sound, which I prefer to BBS.
BTW, what other the The stuff have you bought? Want suggestions?

Well, it's funny how I got into the The...one night, a friend of mine
commented that a fishbone song I had playing in my car sounded like the
The...well, I was curious, so he let me borrow Dusk. Well, I don't know
how he could have said that the The sounds like fishbone, but I really
liked Dusk, so I just went to the record store and bought some other stuff...
I got Mind Bomb first. I liked it a lot, so I bought Infected and Soul
Mining...at first I really didn't like Infected, but loved Soul Mining.
I still think Soul Mining is my favourite album, but I have recently
discovered that Infected is pretty cool too...
I haven't really had a chance to listen to BBS a lot yet, but I liked the
way it sounded on my first listen...
There's a copy of the Solitude EP at a local record store...would you
reccomend I get this? Also, I have seen the "I Saw the Light" video...I
like the song, but am quite hesitant to pick up Hanky Panky only because
I fear Hank Williams...what are your thoughts on this?

I know Hank Williams music and it is really good. He is one of the very
few people who is able to write good music using only two or three
chords. I have to admit that I listen to his music with a musicians ear.
The covers Matt has produced are very different from the originals. In
fact the only thing that reminds me of Hank Williams are the lyrics. I
think The The has done a good job allthough covering Hank Williams to me
is kinda blasphemous. You can buy the record. It's very Matt Johnson-ish
(do we keep this expression?).
About my favourite song or album, it changes. I think now favourite
album: Dusk, favourite song: August & September

I have decided to pick this one up...But I'll wait 'till it shows up used
somewhere...they're asking 20$ for it new at every record store...
BTW, does Johnny Marr appear on Hanky Panky?

My English isn't very good...

I'm a big the The fan and a beginner in guitar playing. I've been browsing
all over the Internet searching after the The guitar tablatures but have
found only few of them. Is there anyone who has tabbed out some the The
songs? Or at least have ideas?

I highly recommend Solitude. Two of my favorite songs are
on there: Another Boy Drowning and Jealousy of Youth. Dolphins is
also a pretty cool song. Of the re-mixes, I think the remix for
Helpline Operator is the best. I think it is a worthy buy. Go
ahead, take the plunge.

Hi everybody,

I suggest that we make a The The release list on this page. Everybody can
add The The releases. If you discover that you have an album, maxi or
wathever you add it to the list. If there are more than one very similar
relaeses, just add what makes the one you add different. Also add if it
is an vinyl album (A), a cd (CD), a vinyl maxisingle (MXS), a maxicd
(MXC), a vinyl single (S), a video (V). Please try to add an as precise
as possible release-date. In a few weeks, when there are no
additions anymore I will make an overview and send it to this page.
Please do not start any conversation about releases on this page. I
suggest that all conversation about this list will take place on one page
so I can include diffilculties in the overview. I suggest you use as
ref.:discussion list.
I also invite Matt Johnson to join us on this page.
In a few days I will start this list but you can start as well.

O.K. everybody, start your engines, GO!

Great idea! I'm surprised we didn't think of it before. :P

We already have a discography. Not much sense in trying to compile one from
scratch. Why does it seem that everyone wants to start a discography when
we've got one already? ("Would your master like a discography?" "Well, I'll
ask him, but I don't think he'll be very keen... he's already got one, you
see!" "Already GOT one?!")

Okay, I admit it: it needs updating. I vow to do my best to have a new release
of the discography posted by the end of this week.
