well what's cool about Dave is you usually "find out" about all the "the The"
stuff he has instead of hearing him brag about it.
Also, he's very nice about giving out info and taking time out of his busy
schedule to help the list or answer questions.
I officially nominate him "man of the year."

Can anyone verify the existence of a 12" "Shades of Blue" on blue
vinyl. A couple of years ago, some person at a record show testified
to the possession of this item. Since I have yet to find evidence to
the contrary, I tend to believe he must have been mistaken.
At the show, he described the item as a legitimate pressing.
Therefore, it stands to reason that one of the discographies would
have catalogued the item. However, I have yet to come across a
discography that details the many available promos (I believe S. Hill
is working on this now). So, I guess it is possible that the item
could exist in some promo state. If anyone has any info, please post
it.

This cartoon wouldn't have been by Tom Johnston would it? Tom was The The's
bass player back in the pre-burning blue soul days, but he chucked it all in
and became a professional cartoonist instead.
He has made references to The The before. I recall a two strip cartoon
featuring a bloke in a infected-era Andy Dog type The The T-shirt. The
details now escape me but the joke was along the lines that freaky t-shirts
such as this may, in fact, be vomit stains.
Ho ho ho.

Sorry the checking took a bit long.
Anyhow, the cartoon "Dave" is by David Miller. It's kind of a gen-X
"Cathy"-like comic strip (in other words, not that impressive. For those
not in the states-- its an "Andy Capp" type of strip without the biting
social commentary ;'/ ). It was a 7 panel story line that had headings
in reference to stages in the cd buying process, ie.:
initial contact
saturation point
purchase realization
self-realization (shows him as a sheep)
the collection (where theThe shows up)
denial.
I think the "slam" was not an offhanded compliment as he was grouping
theThe in with such groups/artists as Sheryl Crow; Til Tuesday; Crash
Test Dummies; and Haircut 100. Also, I don't think the guy who writes
the strip has the "hepness" to actually listen to artists for the sake of
understanding the whole of their work. He seems to be more of the
"average top-40 guy"; Mr. pizza and a six-pack.
Maybe I'm being elitist, but is there a certain type of personality that
finds themselves attuned to artists (not just theThe, but other groups as
well), where the majority are just tuning in for the "next cool song"?

I was quite bitter after having seen this. My roommate and I then
argued ad nauseum over the validity of the slam. We came to agreement
that it had to be some sort of inside joke, seeing as how the rest of the
artists on the list were definately top 40 material (although mostly
alternative rock cross-overs) and the the really hasn't had enough
success to validate mention in a pop comic strip. After a short cry, I
put on August&Septembet and felt better.

I just checked out the Sunday comics and it appears that my newspaper,
the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, only carries Dave Monday-Saturday. Sorry I
missed it, looks like I have a reason to subscribe to their competitor,
me being a petty person and all. Anyone heard anything on Gun Sluts?
I'm sorry if its been discussed (I'm fairly new here) but its been kind
of bugging me. I also want to respond to the BBS message. It's not my
favorite, but its still in the regular rotation around here. Compared to
most music in the same vein, its a helluva lot better.

Last week, I requested confirmation of the existence of a
BLUE VINYL "shades of BLue" 12". I have yet to receive this
confirmation. I would like to put the question out there again just in
case anyone who could answer the question missed or forgot about it.
This will be my last posting on the matter.
If I do not receive any confirmation this time, I will be
satisfied in concluding that it does not actually exist (as I originally
thought.) If you know of or have it on BLUE VIYNL, please tell me any
information you can on it (promo, catalogue no., ect.). I did recieve
some correspondence concerning this matter; however, they seemed to
verify the existence of "Shades of Blue" and not "Shades of Blue" on BLUE
VINYL.

Subject: Interview with Matt
Date: Thu, 13 Jun 1996 15:21:48 -0600 (MDT)
Message-Id:
Is there anybody still alive out there?
Well here is a transcript of the interview with Matt that I got
off of MuchMusic. Hope all of you people (Luster) enjoy it.
The interview was aired some time ago, and yes I left out some of
the irrelevant points to save my sanity. ENJOY!
The interview took place at the Horseshoe tavern in Toronto.
IV (interviewer): So what do you think the fascination was with the Hank
Williams songs?
MJ: It's as much a fascination with him as a cultural icon as it is with
the songs. The songs are obviously great songs - they're very durable -
for people to be covering his songs 40 odd years after his death proves
their durability and their power. But he died young before it was
fashionable to die young - before the likes of James Dean and Jim Morrison
and Jimmi Hendrix and whatever. He predated Elvis somewhat ... there
was a whole sexual aura that was around him (apparently from the people
that saw him). One thing about his stuff is obviously that he deals with
simple human truths. That's why his songs are still listened to after his
death. They touch a lot of people and certainly his stuff obviously
touched me and I guess the area of song writing that I'm in (kinda
confessional song writing) that's the nearest ... the closest I get.
IV: The video - "I Saw the Light"
MJ: Did you see the video?
IV: Did I ever - I always get vertigo watching it. How on earth did you
do that?
MJ: Well I was on mild sedatives and I was plunked on to the um...
IV: gargoyle ... or whatever it is -
MJ: The gargoyles and its 600 foot below - I don't really get vertigo very
much do you get vertigo?
IV: As I said... literally. I felt myself completely ill at ease watching
it.
MJ: Well it was pretty unsettling standing on the thing. The director,
Sam Buyer [?] was holding on to the camera and someone was hanging on to
him and he was with a pilot. There was only about 5 on them that had a
license that enables them to fly so close to buildings and this guy was
circling around - It was certainly pretty intense!
- ------ skot's statement: Sorry, in my last message I said that the height
scared the piss out of Matt. I was wrong. I must have remembered the
interviewer's words instead of Matt's. Oh well back to the interview -----
IV: So actually last time we spoke you told me then (this was about 2
years ago) that you were working on [Hanky Panky]. It's taken 2 years to
finish it?
MJ: We've been working on it for about 4 years on and off. Coz it's like
a side project really and I'm working on a Robert Johnson one as well, but
that's something I have on the back burner that I go to every few months I
get some time off.
IV: Both those artists are really building blocks for essentially all
modern day music.
MJ: They are, that's why I decided to do those two because if you trace
back the roots of contemporary singer/songwriters in rock music you see
that Hank Williams influenced people from Chuck Barry to Neil Young to
Bob Dylan; the same came from Robert Johnson - the Rolling Stones, Led
Zeppelin and whatever.
- ---at this point they show a video clip and the interview is essentially
over.-----
Well there you go.
Cheers,
skot

I went to lift the "Infected" movie off the much music shelves for
dubbing and could not get access to it because it is in a locked
cabinent with amillion stickers saying "Do Not Air." This probably
explains why you don't see the older videos get any airtime, not that
they would be in normal rotation anyway. Apparantly the content is too

So this explains why I don't see too much the The on MuchMusic.
They did, however have a spotlight on them a while ago -- 1/2 hour of just
the The videos and MJ interviews. I know they played at least one video
off the Infected VHS tape!
On the subject of videos, does anyone out there know where I can
get all of Matt's music videos (including the "adult oriented" ones). I
have the Infected tape, but I'd like the older and newer material as well.
OK here is my feeble attempt to start a discussion:
What is your favourite the The video? Personally I'm a big fan of
Infected. I love the religious (anti-religious?) theme behind it. The
best scene in the whole video is when Matt watches the burning bonfire
that he is supposedly in. The whole apparent comparison between love and
religion really thrilled me!
Well that's enough from me, hope that gets something started.

If it helps with any of the compilations (dubs etc...) I have a
copy of the interview (that I transcribed a few days ago) and one
spotlight I can add if people want it. I can dub tapes as well, however
the quality is not all that great! Hope this thingey works. 'Till then -

I don't suppose anyone could dub to PAL-VHS ??
Down here in the antipodes we don't get Much, so we miss out on
interviews etc. I have "Infected", "vs the World" and "Dusk 'til
Dawn", but apart from a guest spot by Matt on Radio with Pictures
about 7 years ago we only get a very rare showing of "Slow train 'til
dawn" on the local Music station.
Anything more recent would be greatly appreciated!!
I do remember back when Infected was released RadPix did show quite a
few of the videos, but since then limited themselves to showing "Slow
train" on a show about sad songs and angst!

The videos I've seen are This is the Day (with Matt sporting a big, curly, goofy do... yes, he did once have hair and if I ever started to lose my hair, I would do what he did and shave all of it off!), Infected, Slow Train to Dawn, Kingdom of Rain, Dogs of Lust, Love is Stronger than Death, Slow Emotion Replay and I Saw the Light... I get the feeling I've also seen the video for Gravitate to Me but I'm not sure if I'm just imagining this or the video was just not all that memorable... was there a video for that song?... and did the video just showed them playing the song in a darkened room a la Dogs of Lust?... I also have a feeling I've seen the video for Out of the Blue (Into the Fire)... maybe one of you guys can confirm this but did it show Matt with a prostitute?... sorry about my memory but I saw these videos long ago... and yes, they were all on MuchMusic... I Saw the Light is probably my favorite and the cheeziest has to go to Kingdom of Rain... as I recall, Matt was lying on a bed for the whole vid
eo and Sinead's parts were sung by these floating apparitions...
and to JaY and Dave, I sure hope you guys can find it in your hearts to do another compilation... if you guys do, I'm willing to go with JaY and try my damndest to get Dave thanked on the liner notes of Matt's next album...

As a The The fan for far too long, there is a frighteningly large number
of The The videos I have never seen. Okay, so I have the wondeful
Infected, but were any films made for Soul Mining? Or even before?
Post Infected, I have a copy of the That Was The Day vid, which is fairly
toss, and have seen I Saw The Light on Beavis and Butthead in America
(superb!). I remember The Beat(en) Generation from the Chart Show, which
did look great, but what of Gravitate To Me and Armageddon Days? Somebody
once told me that they saw a video of Kingdom of Rain on MTV, shot in a
flat that included a fishtank. Can anybody confirm that this exists?
The Dusk videos are on From Dusk To Dawn - great title for a movie that
features Danny the Wonderpony - but in a horrible cut up way, and often to
Foetus remixes. My guess is that, when the 'best of' albums are released
next year, all these obscure videos will be released on one tape.
So I reckon we have to wait until then. Assuming, that is, that Matt will
get of his arse and finish another album.
I wait with baited breathe,

Hello everyone!
First of all, let me tell you that I'm highly, highly interested in a video
compilation.
It feels like centuries since I've seen a theThe video on TV. I remember
slightly the "Gravitate to me video" (was it the one where Matt was taking
deep breaths from an oxygen mask???). All I remember from "Kingdom of Rain"
was Matt, lying on a bed with an angel flying around and singing Sinead's
parts of the song (or was it really Sinead as the angel?).
The only video I saw from Soul Mining was "This is the day". Was there
any video made for "Perfect" or for any other song of that album?
Hope to see some videos from Dusk someday. And please, you guys that have
access to a Muchmusic schedule, make an announcement of a theThe
spotlight on the list!
Thanks!
Marie

RE: Gravitate to Me video
It definately exists, and is pretty damn good. Having said that I can't
remember an awful lot about it - Johnny Marr is in it quite a bit and obviously
Matt makes an appearance, and the eye that's on the cover of the single in
quite prominant now and again. One of my friends had a copy on a promo video so
that's the only chance I got to see it.

Sounds like a great plan ... I would be exceptionally interested in seeing
any and all Matt videos that you could get your hands on ... legally,
morally or otherwise. I tend not to watch a lot of Much (I don't think I
fit their target audience), so the only Matt I see is the "Infected" movie
and the "the The vs. the world" video (which I own) and the (way to
infrequent) Spotlights.
If there's anything I could do to help (words of encouragement ... constant
badgering ... reasonable cash donations ... assistance - I live in T.O.),
please let me know.
Until then, I will remain "just another western guy, with desires that I
can't satisfy".

Yes there is a video for Kingdom of Rain with a glow in the dark fish
tank and acouple of seahorses if I remember correctly. I moving within
the next two weeks so
i'll see what i can do about creating a compilation tape to dub for you
and post it when i'm good to go, so hold on to your (sea)horses.
Interviews are much harder to find because they don't always keep the
raw.

Great to hear that a Kingdom Of Rain video does exist, and it is nice to
have proof that Matt understands the aesthetic values of seahorses. But
this does lead to the question, why was it made? There are three
possibilities:
1) Kingdom Of Rain was released as a single in some obscure (i.e. non UK)
land, such as Iceland, Kuwait, Translyvania or America. If this was the
case, then was there anything good on the B-side? Or was it the usual
collection of The The Vs The World live tacks, bits of Soul Mining and
remixes of minimal artistic quality.
2) Originally Mind Bomb was to have a full length Infected-style video
but, for whatever reason, this never happened. So if Kingdom Of Rain was
shot, then was anything else?
3) Was it earmarked as a single that never happened due to appalling sales
of Armageddon Days? Was Sinead in the video?
Any wise people out there who can shed light on this?
Cheers,
John.

I'm seeking high and low for Shriekback's 1984 release "Jam Science".
Anyone willing to part with their copy or know where I can get copy?
I will be eternally grateful and willing to part with cash, I don't
have much to trade some theThe stuff, maybe some cranes, breeders
singles. I might have some other things, I'll have to look through the

in case anyone's interested my thoughts on theThe don't extend very far - I
like to listen to the songs, think and experience the words, and wonder
when and if the man himself is ever gonna release some new music for me to
consume. There is however a trick that I perform upon myself when I listen
to some of his music, namely I pretend I'm in a pitch black cavern
undergound, perhaps at its centre there's a lighted candle on the cold
stone floor, and all I can hear and feel are Matt's voice, the music
reverberating with my soul, my mind unable to wander. I say that perhaps
there's a candle because for some songs I don't want one but for others I
do. I might also require the presence of someone to caress and to touch
and to consume as well, but hey that's extra.
after this writing to the world at large I make a note of how much I create

What about the singer from The Fine Young Cannibals. With the obvious
exception...Matt does'nt chew rocks. I understand he was quite common on
the British television scene.
