Subject: Last night i dreamt about Matt.

Hi. I have been absent from the list for a while but last night i had my
first dream with Matt Johnson and i had to share it.

In the dream i was back in highschool. Matt Johnson was a teacher and he
was teaching a class on his music. I knew who he was and i was excited and
could not believe that he was teaching at my highschool. For some strange
reason i did not take the class but i would skip my class and go hear what
he had to say. My best friend was in the class so that gave me an excuse to
come to class when it was ending. I would walk by the class room and i
would hear the music from his albums. He would ask people to write notes
about it. He would ask them how they felt about the music. Matt was really
strange in my dream. He kept on sniffing stuff which i assumed was cocaine
from his desk in between the songs and lectures. He had a wicked smile, but
i did not percieve him as mean in my dream. He paced back abd forth while
he talked, he seemed anxious and excentric. I finally had the courage to go
to the class room and i wanted to ask him a question but i did not know
what. I kept on thinking...shit, what should i ask him, he is right here in
front of me...i do not want to sound stupid. Finally i asked him why he was
teaching this class. He looked at me and said " That is a good question."
Then he walked away. That is all i remember.

Has anyone ever dreamt with Matt Johnson? What do you think this dream
means?? Please write me. Thanks, ana.

I have dreamt of impending album cover designs. The most accurate I have
been is with the design of Dusk. I dreamt the exact colors, but couldn't
remember the image when i awoke.

That's a truly bizarre dream! Very amusing stuff indeed. Johnson
appearing "eccentric and anxious" is great, and while it doesn't make
any sense, dreams rarely do.

My local radio station was talking up a new disc coming out in
August....it's the soundtrack for the movie "First Love, Last Rites". The
music is done by this group "Shudder to Think" who collaborated with other
artists.......
One of those artists is matt. Song is called "jelly on the table"

Subject line says it all. I was under the impression someone was going to
make CD-Rs available of previously unavailable The The songs (mostly from
POD). I thought it was pretty close about 2 months ago but never heard
anything more about it. Anybody know the scoop?

I was channel surfing during commercials recently, and on the local
bastardised version of MTV Europe, they were playing the original
video for "This is the day".

Young frizzy haired Matt was doing a lot of walking around against a
bluescreen in his black stovepipes and leather jacket. The vid
featured a chap with an accordion, and Matt with a dark haired girl,
and older man and woman, and three younger looking blokes - were these
mum, dad and brothers?

One definitely looked like Andy Dog, but I have yet to grab the
Infected songbook and check out the other two.

Cheers

Spotted that same video back in my younger days of college in the mid 80's.
Wishing I had recorded it now.

Hi ya,
the dark-haired girl is Fiona, his girl-friend, and the others actually are
his family.
Matt's got an unbelievably awful haircut there, hasn't he? Isn't it good
that we aren't so superficial to like an artist for his looks but for his
songs, or that was what I thought when I saw that video ages and ages ago.
Imagine my surprise when I saw Matt for the first time live and I saw a man
with charisma who didn't look extremely bad.
It was really embarrassing, cause on the way to the concert I discussed all
political, personal and religious aspects of The The's songs with my friends
and on the way back I just sat there with a stupid grin on my face. Tss..
Chrissy

PS: When I read your April-e-mails someone mentioned a song called
lip-dripping-can anybody tell me if this was a part of a soundtrack or
whatever, and where can I have a listen? Please, I'm dying to hear some
'new' The The stuff (aren't we all..)
About that CD with rarities, did you think of including 'What Stanley saw'
(from the 'Perspectives and Destortion'-Sampler), well I'll check my records
and tapes for other stuff but I guess you The The experts out there know
most of the songs..

Thanx Quincy-
this was the first time I really really loved the internet/ web absolutely
(I'm a very paranoid person, I keep thinking this tecnology might be abused
by somenoe..).
Because I just heard a 'new' (new to me) The The song and I realized how
much I'm in love with that music (and I mean the music and not the man).
Man, this makes me high!!!
It's like: This music is so much 'me' as if I'd written it myself-well I
don't know if you know what I mean ....??

I was watching a movie the other day called NOWHERE, by Greg Araki. It is a
B movie about LA. It is actually pretty funny. Through the whole movie,
most of the characters are either having sex or on drugs. It shows in a
very exagerated way life in LA. The glamour and the shallow bullshit that
people do just to be cool. The reason i brought this movie up is because at
the end of it to my sweet surprise was a The the song....Love is Stronger
than Death. It made the ending even better. I suggest to all of you who
like weird funny movies to rent it.

Greg Araki, it seems like deja vu. I am also part of a Curve mailing list
and we just got finished talking (trashing) the movie. No offense, Ana, of
course, but after seeing Doom Generation, I NEVER wanted to see another
Araki film (piece of crap).Doom Generation was disgusting, stupid, and just
overall pathetic. The only thing that saves these movies at all are the
soundtrack, that features the like of Curve, Lush, Jesus and Mary Chain,
Love & Rockets, Slowdive, and many more. I'm also pretty sure that the The
is not on the Nowhere soundtrack.
Now that I've bitched up a storm, I'm sure you will all run out to see what
the fuss is all about, but just say I didn't warn you. I will say that if
you are into the above bands you should consider checking out the
soundtracks.
Just to stress again, as there have been many bashings as of late, Ana, no
offense, I just really dislike Greg Araki.

Ah ha!! So there are other people out there who have seen this too!! I, sadly,
was exposed to this film in November (before Christmas!! such a shame!). It was
an experiment whereby a friend picked it just on the titles from the box (I
believe what caught his eye was "Beverly Hills 90210 on crack"), and I was an
unsuspecting viewer who had never heard of Greg Araki (Bastard!!). Anyway,
about 25 minutes into the film, we figured "man, time for a cigarette" (even
though we were both trying to quit), and from there, we only needed stronger
stuff to watch and not lose it.

Of course, at the end, when "Love is Stronger than Death" came on, I made them
rewind it and play that a couple of times. What a freaky film. Not that I
didn't enjoy it, mind you, and now that sort of masochistic self-torture has
become a ritual with my friends and me... renting weird freaky movies and
hanging out on Thursday or Friday nights.

Glad to hear I wasn't his (Araki's) only victim...

Yeah, I can see why most people would detest Araki. Regardless of what you
think of his films though, they are certainly interesting. Doom Generation is
disgusting but I disagree that it is stupid or pathetic. To have such a
strong evaluation of that film sort of defeats its purpose. Araki
deliberately try to give the film a B-Movie type of feel. Anyway, I can
probably say a few more things to make my point better but this is not the
place. But for those of you who like the work of John Waters, Greg Araki
should be right up your alley.

Since movies are the topic of discussion, I just saw the best Rock n' Roll
movie this weekend. It's called Hard Core Logo and it's a must-see for any
rock n' roll fan. It's about a fictional punk band called Hard Core Logo who
were relatively famous during the Candian punk scene of the late '70's.
Anyway, they get back together in 1996 and decide to do a reunion tour across
Western Canada. It's a good film for anyone who is curious about what an
independent band have to go through during a tour. There are also cameos from
punk legends like D.O.A., Art Bergman and The Ramones.

Sorry for the off-topic post.

Erin,

Doom Generation did suck i agree with you. Nowhere for some reason was much
better. It defenitly was the same style as Doom GEnereation but it was ten
times better. Maybe it was that the The the song was at the end of the
movie...it left me with a good feeling. I was not offended by your
comments...i rather you be honest.

Later, ana.

It's actually on volume 2 of the "Sharks..." series. Great collection of songs, by the way; worth buying for the rest of the stuff in addition to MJ's song.

I need some quality The The logos. If possible they would be larger,

Anybody knows about any good sites that I could visit

save me is a bootleg cd. made in italy a few years ago, recorded i
think
at brixton in UK during the dusk tour.

If this is the case then it would be well worth having. This was the
only time i ever saw The The play live and it was VERY well done with a
few interesting touches like the band runing on wearing terrorist style
masks for Armageddon days etc which struck a chord for a lot of people
in the audience because it was around the time that the first moves in
the recent Northern Ireland peace process were getting going . The only
down side was some sections of the crowd giving the comedian Tommy
Cockles who was the support a hard time . Possibly stems from the same
sentiment as dislike for off subject posts ? Who knows?
If any one on the list has a spare of this or ever sees one, would you
please let me know as i would love to have it .

As i'm here, and people were talking about films previously, i would
like to put in a quick word for "junk mail " which is a Norwegian black
comedy about a postman. Its worth the ticket price to hear a dead cool
version of" born to be wild" and the Norwegian translation of the theme
music for "Postman Pat" alone. It even makes Norwegians look ugly, which
is an amazing feat as i thought all the ugly ones settled in Scotland ,
Ireland , England and Normandy around the 9th century. Ths film lasted
a week in Denver so if it comes to your local, don't hang about.

Yours praying for a miracle against Brazil.
Ken

PS i wouldnt mind if he explored the direction of "Jelly on the Table" a
bit more. Its pretty hard core, roots stuff, that no one else seems to
be persuing, and there is more gold in that vein that Matt could find,
if anyone can.

Yes, it is. The Save Me bootleg was also recorded at the Brixton Academy,
and the setlists are (to the best of my knowledge) the same.

shudder to think has been around for about 10 years. they were based in
DC until a few years ago, when they moved to NY and signed with epic.
they play a very powerful, eclectic style of music. heavily invfluenced
by strange 70's art rock, they are completely unique. the singer has an
extraordinary high-pitched voice. this band is not for everyone. try
"pony express record," which came out in 1994. or "get your goat," on
dischord records. ignore their most recent,"50,000 bc."

Ok, since you've all been waiting eagerly for my opinion of "jelly on the
table," here it is:

Simple lyrics, deep droning voice, repetative guitar, simple chords...it's

Viruses can't be sent via e-mail unless they are contained in
attachments. Don't open attachments from unreliable sources and you
(generally) won't have a problem.

Happy e-mailing...

Can you please send all virus warnings that you get through the Help
Desk @ helpdesk@smednet.com before sending them out to the company. The
" Win a Holiday" scare was simply a hoax and the goal of the hoax was to
get the warning out to as many people as possible and create a bigger
problem that actually exists.

The Help Desk will research the Virus warning and send an appropriate
response to all Smed employees.

Thanks

Jeff Austin

Now that the list is deathly quiet and my opinion might actually be read
without receiving harsh responses that were prevalent during the last
'debate' that aired on Infected - I'd like to let you all know, specifically
all those who were extremely vocal in attacking Richard Ings, that I believe
that he won the debate - and it was you who did not answer his questions,
not he who did not answer yours. Interestingly the periods of debating that
pop up every now and again on this list are just reactions to one or two
individuals who decide to make the effort to express themselves. Those
periods are NOT a continuing discussion of a topic, but rather intense
"that's what you reckon" affairs. I pose a question: why do those who claim
to be not mainstream frequently react almost hysterically to some other
non-mainstream opinions? Surely the point is that one is open to commentary
on all sides of life, which means in toe, opinions from anyone will be given
a hearing and will NOT be attacked because you believe they fit within a set
paradigm of "evil". Be able to justify your own position, and as a
corollary, be able to admit that you may not understand another's - which
means of course that what you believe belongs to that paradigm of evil might
well NOT belong to it; for if you do understand another's opinion then
answer their questions so they understand, and pose them questions that have
significance to them.

Now back to the silence.... enjoy.

Im afriad you lost me there, but it probably doesnt matter, Im sure
everyone else got it.

1) disagreeing with someone , even strenuously, or passionately, isnt
the same thing as "attacking" them. I tend to observe that those who
scream "attack" the loudest, are usually the ones doing it, or at least
, feel like they are loosing the argument. Seems like a bit of a cop
out.

2) When a simple question, honestly asked, many times, by different
people, is repeatedly stonewalled, or replaced with a strawman, and
deliberately misinterpreted, again and again, I dont call that even
"participating" in a debate,.... much less winning it.

Im glad you got something out of it, at any rate. Sounds like you did,
or you wouldnt still be thinking about it, and that's more important
than who you agree with, or who you thought "won".

So...so...er...

Well frankly I am appalled that Matt Johnson had anything to do with Marc
Almond. I once had the extreme displeasure of actually meeting him and
was just...appalled. Yuk, the thought of him makes me shudder.

On top of that I got roasted for suggesting (on another music mailing
list) that Scandinavian tiny talent Yngwie Malmsteen (he makes albums
that consist of going twiddly twiddly on his guitar for 45 minutes at a
time) just pointlessly shows off.

Ooh. Marc Almond. Shudder. Yug.

Ooh, I'll be having those shuddery shivery thigs all day now.

Bye

Hi all,

Just wanted to send out a greeting to say that I have returned after a 2 year absence.
Unfortunately, I assume there hasn't been much to talk about in the area of new the
The music, unless I've missed something.

Glad to be back.
