MTV is the knucklehead who decided to put Love is Stronger Than Death as the
music bed to a clip of Romeo and Juliet. The clip is part of the MTV Movie
Awards promo. Tis most unrighteous of them, you can tell I've had a long day
doing way too much work and I needed to get upset about something.

Last time I checked I was a girl...now some might argue. And this is
subjective with the day and age of the transgender, cross dressing, I'm a boy
but love garter belts kind of society. But on to other topics.
Why are there so few females on these lists? and especially liking specific
artists such as theThe...I've done some informal research. And out of all of
the radio station, record labels and music oriented type things I've done I'd
say less than 1% of the females I worked with liked MJ and theThe
specifically. The lyrics are brutally honest and most women, warning:
generalization, would rather have the truth couched in some idealized or
exaggerated presentation or what I call the Romeo syndrome. They want the
flowery words from the balcony and pledging eternity or death. Most of the
people I know are dedicated to Matt Johnson not just because they music has a
good beat, but because the lyrics are addicting and representative of their
life experience. But back to that gender thingee...
Another thought is that we in western society insist on categorizing traits as
female or male. Our language, our culture, our economy, our society and our
religions depend on that separation. So when I tell people I played American
football, lacrosse and soccer as the only female on the team, I get really
strange looks here. Well, dammit I love sports, and these sports were the most
challenging for me. And then I blow their mind by telling them I started the
dance team in my high school, which was actually a combo of gymnastic tumbling
and dance, it was hard work but we looked good ;p. Then go tell people you
like hockey and basketball, played four fantasy football teams, love the
outdoors challenge of climbing mountains and ice, tell them you're in to power
and running things but wear a skirt, cook gourmet vegetarian meals for kicks
and well, they get confused. So my answer to all this cross dressing and
gender bending is that it is only natural because we screwed up in the first
place. Wearing certain kinds of clothes or liking certain activities is not a
male female thing, but an individual thing. Based on physiology and the
tendencies associated with having certain combinations of female and male
hormones may give you a disposition for illnesses or personalty traits,
but...well I could go on for ever. But I want this to at least make some
sense, so I stop now.
And you thought your brain wouldn't get any exercise today, HA!

I have to agree with Kayleigh on the majority of what you wrote, but I
find your generalization contradictory to what you wrote about
afterward. Yeah, it's true, gender roles and stereotypes are outdated
and people are defined by individual characteristics. I, myself, am a
firm believer in that philosophy. After all, I have endured the jeers
and the jokes of my "unfeminine" ways. But then you make the
generalization about women - like being a woman determines what kind of
music or lyrics we like. Hmmm...make sense? Not really.
I absolutely love MJ and the The, and I am into music that tells
it like it is. I mean, the fact that Ani DiFranco has been one of my
favorite artists has got to tell you something about me. It's not women
that go for lyrics that are idealized and/or exaggerated, it's all
different people. Besides, there isn't anything wrong with idealized
lyrics anyway. I mean, the point of music is to (sorry about the cliche)
express yourself and to be able express yourself in your own style. Just
because someone sings about or listens to idealized lyrics, does not mean
they don't deal with reality. Isn't music an escape anyway?
It doesn't matter how many women are on this list, all that
matters is that we're all fans of MJ and the The. Sorry to clutter all
your mailboxes, but you have to admit, it's fun to get messages from people.

Come to think of it, I work in the music industry, both as an artist and =
in radio services, and less than 1% of the males I know like theThe.
Music, however, is not only an escape, although it may be for some. =
Physiologically, sound waves can resonate with brain waves and cause =
some euphoria, and thus "escape". But it also does other things, =
depending on the tempo/rhythm, key, and tonal character.=20
The reason I like theThe is more like what Kayleigh described. Musically =
and lyrically, MJ somehow resonates with stuff that never gets touched. =
He is the old friend that will massage the tension that your uncaring =
girlfriend won't.

Yes we are out here, and we're pretty dedicated. Maybe you haven't noticed
the apparent attitude with wich your question has been answered so far, but
it seems to me (by my personal experience also) that for a woman to choose
voluntarily to listen to theThe over Tony Braxton, or some blonde chick from

much puts you in the musical elite/minorty. In fact, I have only one friend

So don't expect the P.C. mutual admiration society to come up and give you a

Kayleigh,Hi and wow!! Although I agree wholeheartedly with your philosophies,
I wasn't thinking that deeply. The the has just never seemed to meto be a band
that I would put in what I call the "penis rock" category. I feel the
seperation is more in terms of those who appreciate and search out new,
quality music, and those who just want to listen to the top 40, with no basic
opinion at all. I have many female friends though who appreciate insightful
lyrics and great music but dont get the the.
I do think our society is changing and females are not generalized as much as
before, but there will always be people who will limit you regardless. I
myself have never been the stereotypical female either. It is a shame though
that more persons dont have exposure to thethe, I think more girls would dig
mj. I personally think he is quite sexy, and I get off on the way he whispers
certain lyrics. I've always found his music quite erotic.
Who knows maybe I'm just ignorant of the generalizations aroud me. I just
read Irenes letter.( Hi Irene, pleased to meet ya!!)and I honestly cant recall
ever getting much shit for not being too feminine. Most of the people I
associate with are of the same mindset. I dont think being a woman defines
what lyrics we listen too, but I have definitely met my share of 'bimbos'.
Funny, as we discuss the deepness of mj's lyrics, A few years back I had the
occasion to hear his interview on 'modern rock live'. Who knows if it was a
bad day or what but he was going on about how his lyrics really weren't that
deep, and acted as if they were just words put down in a drunken state. Went
on to say how he didnt feel emotionally attached to the lyrics. Cant recall
exactly, but I do remember being disillusioned after hearing it, in the end I
just chalked it up to it being a bad day.
Well, its nice to see that the girls on the list are intelligent ones to chat
with. Looking forward to many discussions. I just hope I figure how this all
works soon.

Art Garfunkel may personally have a problem with women but his music is
incredible, well okay I'm a huge SImona nd Garkfunkel fan. Saw them when I was
a wee lass, age of four in Grant Park, Chicago. ANd I'm emotionally attached
to their work as I grew up with folkies for parents. I have a raelly cool GLen
Campbell, Glen Yarborough and Kingston Trio LP collection. there's that wierd
chick thing again, gosh is she stange. people are strange whether you're a
stanger or not.

I'd have to throw in Iron Maiden, ALL the Hair bands, Poison, Warrant,
Crue, Kiss, Nugent, and I always thought Art Garfunkel was kind of a
dick too.

ALL metal, most of the slick 70's stuff like Journey, REO, etc. ALL of
it was music for frustrated young wankers.
Punk was a backlash to that and disco. The late 70's was the era of
the penis.
Rap is mostly as well.
There are angry young men with dicks and there are angry young men with
brains. Ive always found the ones with brains a lot more charming.
They have an aura of being sexually successful, while the ones with the
hair and operatic bombast seem to be sexually frustrated.
Humorous or depressed nerd = sexy
Angry screamer or mirror hugger = not sexy
mj is sort of an older depressed nerd type so his anger or frustration
does not come from LACK of experience, but BECAUSE of it. A lot of the
rappers sound like they have never gotten laid. Ditto for the long
haired whote bad boys. wank wank wank!

Them Spice Girls will be yet another turd-stain on the skivvies of not
the music industry itself, but the entertainment industry AND the fans.
I used to give people a lot of leeway for having liked Milli Vanilli and
Snow and Whitney Houston and Michael Bolton and Bush.
I think not killing them over it was a mistake. I guess I knew that if I
did, I would have to slam myself for not making distinctions between
other parts of contemporary entertainment and culture.
But no more. I think a good grinding might bring those in need to
greater consciousness. Art, however individuals define it, is NOT "May
yay yay yay beh! I didn't mean to hurt you ohsobad", and from now on, I
think I shall speak up about it.
It's hard to tell people that something they like sucks, because if they
do, then they suck. Or something.

While I agree with the basic assertion that the music industry
is
dominated by men, I would have to say that the problem facing
theThe fans
(such a perjorative term, isn't it?) isn't the presence of
"penis rock," it
is the simplicity of the music out there, in that it is so very
prosaic
in its aim: to get a cheap emotional reaction in which thought

After all, what's the difference between NIN and Alanis
Morisette? they
both work on your being peeved at the world.
And what's the difference between Mariah Carey and the Verve
Pipe? they
both make you feel really smarmily depressed.
Not to say that that sort of music isn't good to listen to every
once and
a while (hey, we've all been victims), but jeesh, where's the
good music
that involves both your heart and your head (OK, the limbic
system and
neocortex)? Where's Gun Sluts?!?
As far as the looks thing goes, I would agree with the assertion
that
looks plays a very important part, but I would have to ask if
the closer
to the mainstream you get (and thus the more formulaic) do looks
become
more important for both male and female artists? And there is
no copping

Just a bit off, Kevin, but a good try.
No joke. (I consider penis jokes quite tacky, actually, and avoid
them.) I've read the various posts about this whole topic and the
ways most people have defined "penis rock." I see it as self-
absorption more than anything. Another term I commonly use
is "puffing," as in puffing one's feathers, like a male bird trying
to attract females. Try it at home; it's really pretty fun: Slap your
hands against your upper chest while making a self-congratulatory
look with your eyes and lips. It screams, "Look at me! Look at
me!"
O'Connor drew an awful lot of unnecessary attention to herself when
she first came out. Granted, in doing so she was defending decisions
that she had made (i.e. abortions, single motherhood) that had been
made public. But what was the point? Whose business was it
anyway?
Enough from me. Back into the shadows I go.

<< I DID think you were talking about Sinead in her early career, because
her latest work was subdued and delicate (while still being quite
crushing).>>
Nor have I heard any of her more recent work.
<< It is difficult for artists to not be self-absorbed. There is a lot of
weight that comes with the release of a record. It lasts forever.
Perhaps it is a "good" artist who gets beyond such?>>
Definitely. New artists feel the need to prove themselves, thus
coming off as self-absorbed. Usually further attempts are more
mellowed because they're maturing professionally.

Well i,ve got to confess i've been lurking as well. Hello to all you
MJ devotees out there. Ive been listening to the boy Matt since about
1983 and i have been finding resonances with "waiting for tomorrow
all of my life" ever since. I dont really think that introspection
and an appreciation of smouldering sexuality are gender specific but
it may be that less women than men trawl through
underground/indie/less commercial music. Lets be honest how many
female trainspotters stamp/ comic book/coin/toys etc collectors are
there? So it may well be that there are less female mj fans than male
purely and simply because there are less women exposed to him. Please
note i am not equating MJ with trainspotting .
Gotta go, because as you all know sleeping boys catch no fish

that's changing.
Women are still treated differently than men in the music

the same goes for some male artists, but definitely not as prominantly.

a while (hey, we've all been victims), but jeesh, where's the good music
that involves both your heart and your head (OK, the limbic system and
neocortex)? Where's Gun Sluts?!?
As far as the looks thing goes, I would agree with the assertion that
looks plays a very important part, but I would have to ask if the closer
to the mainstream you get (and thus the more formulaic) do looks become
more important for both male and female artists? And there is no copping
out of this one by women claiming "depth"; I've seen the "Tiger Beats". ;-/

I don't think that music has to always be deep and meaningful to be quality.
All music elicits some emotional reaction, be it a cheap one or not. I dig
'squirrel nut zippers' and 'soul coughing', two bands who may not provoke deep

upsurge of 'unfeminine' bands the past few years, so times must be a changin'.
I really like L7, but then again they could also be classified as a
'penis-envy' band. Hey,take that Donita Sparks though, now theres some cover
girl material.
My favorite Donita story, albeit a disgusting one goes as follows: in
response to hecklers in the crowd, in the midst of performing, she reaches up
under her dress, into her vagina, yanks out her tampon and throws it in
hecklers face. A unique girl to say the least, and not what I would call
feminine.

Oh....40 comes around sooner than you all think and you really dont
mentally feel like you are that old. I think Matt must be 40 or close
to it and his music certainly appeals to a lot of people my age.
I wasn't 40 when I was going to Snakefinger shows and and Seeing Gang
of Four and the Clash and yes even U2 at small clubs, where you could go
to the back stage party after, just cause you were there.
And I was REALLY young when I was hearing all of those free bands in
golden gate park..... Names you wouldn't probably know, but some of them
were pretty cool.
Rock and Roll never really changes. Matt is a big John Lennon fan so
my guess is anybody that really liked Lennon would like Matt. There are
also some odd reminders of early Dillan.
This age thing... It happens really fast. It IS odd when my 20
something room mates treat me like their mom and get real suprised when
I crank up the stereo, with music they thought was too young for me.
The worst is when i walk through their space to get to the front door
and they act all wierd because they are smoking a joint and they think,
like I will dissaprove or something. I was smoking joints before they
were BORN! YIKES! Its like they think Im some ALIEN!
Oh, and a great parody of penis rock was The Violent Femmes. I saw
them at the I Beam twice here (opening for the BUZZCOCKS last

a bit tOO pervasive to be parody...but the first album was an absolute

I am considerably younger than forty. I hang with people much older than
I am, several upwards of forty. I always felt comfortable with people
much older than I.
I am reminded of a quote I read in a British guitar mag last year.
Johnny Marr stated that he did not think people get "cool" until they
are thirty.
Sometimes I think that the biggest difference attributed to relative age
is that people take a long time to recover from being young.

Oh my.... I guess I should count my damn blessings, it COULD always be
worse!
"Cool" is a tough word because most people just never get cool period!
But I think people dont get "steady" or "centered" until their
thirties.
I have an industrial sort of space that includes a storefront in the
lower Haight Area of San Francisco, and I sublet it to artists, or
people who need to live in a big cold storefront for some reason. This
neighborhood is sort of bohemian, so I get kids and yuppies. (the latter
who think you can buy something that will make you cool). Yuppies are
not cool, never. They are born uncool and the older they get the more
they try to buy their way there, and when that doesn't work they whine
and complain.
So the yuppoise, who never want to THINK they ARE the yuppoise, DON'T
work out here. After the thrill is gone they wake up and realize they
are living in a cold dirty storefront with a loft and it isn't just
going to transform itsef into a condo, no matter what they expect or
whine about... Bummer,...!
So I try to screen them out , and often end up with 20 something,
(nearing 30 ) kids and they are cool, BUT, things like paying the rent
on time, and not inviting several people over to live here all the time
are sort of beyond their capacity to be stable, no matter what they sign
or promise up front. They have a tendancy to push good will until it
breaks, And that isn't really too cool. They often decide I am not
"cool" because I send the rent money in and have to hunt them down and
ask for their share. Even though I know the Landlord IS cool but gets
uncool when the rent is always late and might do something nasty , like
raise the rent to something like what its worth, which would send us all
packing.
This is sort of the "coolness" problem with people under thiry. They
haven't been slapped around by Karma enough to understand enlightened
self interest, like contributing tp to the bathroom, not moving in their
junkie boyfriends, and paying the rent. I understand, but would prefer
partying with them as opposed to living with them. They are still in the
dress rehearsal phase of life, and know they can keep blowing it and
just run away. Hell, I did.
Well thats how it LOOKS form this 40 y/o's perspective.
So I can tell you that even though people may not get there until after
30, the ones who survive , (without becoming a yuppie or a speed freak
or a junkie), are few and far between. "Cool" seems to be deselected
for in evolution. Most people I know who are my age and cool , don't
have kids., so the gene pool is very depleted.

the fuck?! When Alanis Morrissette came out, people were constantly
pegging her the "angry chick singer", as if women aren't allowed to be
dissatisfied with what's out there. Yet, the same people always herald
male bands and singers who sing about the SAME thing (ex. Tool, Rage

so. I think it's more like women are coming out with what they want to

Just my two bits on the Alanis thread:
I have trouble with the comparison between Alanis "Jagged little voice"
Morrissette and bands like Tool and Rage (who, consequently I wouldn't
classify as penis rock). Yes, they both fit the angry genre. The big
difference is that Rage and Tool do it well (I can feel those flames
coming already). The reason is purely in the music and lyrics rather
than the sex of the singer. Both Tool and Rage have something to say.
Rage - is gunning for the rights of the oppressed; Tool - has a pretty
decent handle on chaotic human emotions. Alanis, conversely, keeps
whining about the same old thing (in a nutshell): The boy of her dreams
has won her over, and she falls head over feet in love with him. BUT
... she sees some girl going down on him in a movie theatre; isn't that
ironic? So she keeps one hand in her pocket and hails a taxi cab to get
her the hell out of there. I'm sorry, but if you want to feel some
genuine music, pick yourself up something by Tori Amos (the tune "Me and
A Gun" -- is one of the most moving songs I've ever experienced) or
Sarah McLachlan -- just to name a few.
Are there any more of you "older lot" ;) who remember Alanis' original
material??-- you know the

I am with Yan on this one. I haven't ever noticed anyone on this list
accusing me of anything, but I have seen a few North Dallas Standard
White Chicks give me an evil eye for expressing my slight disapproval of
Alanis. I think my love of MJ's work might cause me to express such
disapproval with a bit of condescension, but I really think (yeah, I
really do think) that these women are so desperate for a voice that any
negative response is met with great disdain on a personal level.
I hate intellectualizing music like this for extended periods of time.

yeah, I remember her when she wanted to be Canada's Debbie
Gibson... and
that's the main reason I don't have much respect for her... she
finds whatever genre of music is currently popular (dance music
in the
late 80's and 'alternative' music in the mid 90's), and then

Wow. This is a pretty strong point. I just don't understand why everyone
thinks Alanis is angry. She had one tune that talked about how she got
dumped and then became a stalker. So what? Every song on her album has
Hip-Hop loops, feel-good chord changes, and a horrible case of vocal
over-affectation (no, I don't mean effects. She was mixed dry to
accentuate even further those little grunts and squeaks at the end of
EVERY FUCKING PHRASE).
I'll take Tori, Kirsty Maccoll, Bjork, Marisa Bozza or Sinead instead,
thank you very much.

Actually the penis-envy was said 'tongue-in-cheek". I surely don't need a
penis to envy, just one to screw, and that isn't always necessary. I am also
surely not a passive person. Miind you, not violent, but I do know what I want
and will usually achieve it. When I was younger, I tended to be envious of,
and even a little wary of the 'aggressive' girls. As time passed I realized I
wasn't even correct in what I assumed was 'power and aggression'. I thought if
a girl was intimidating, physical, and/or verbally boisteroous in her opinions
that made her powerful. Now I show my daughter through example that this is
not true. I constantly stress that power is respecting others opinions, but
knowing your own mind and what yoou want regardless of what others think. She
has always been exposed to both male and female activities and sees me achieve
many goals without male assistance. I have a great husband, but we are our own
people., and you know what? Y'know who her idol is? Pamela lee anderson, and
she loves the spice girls. She has been exposed to great female singers sionce
birth, alanis, joni, lush,courtney,..but she thinks they suck. Who the hell
knows? I gave birth to a 'disco bimbo'. Or maybe she's been observing, and
believes that no matter what I say, the power of a female is in her chest.
This coould be true for many men, albeit the wrong ones. That will be our next
lesson.
Sorry to go off on a tangent, it really was just a joke. Life's to short, you
shouldn't take everything so seriously. One thing I've learned is to save my
anger for issues where it will make a difference. In most instances, I think
people are quite formed in their opinions, and whether I agree or not will
make no difference. It is important to let your voice be heard, buts thats
about all you can do in most instances, and just live our lives
indicative(?sic)of how we feel.
Sheesh, am I babbling or what?I hope this makes some kind of sense.

I like that. Ive never quite heard it exressed this way, but if you
define part of power, an essential part of it, as respecting other's
opinions, I think that truely will work!
In any negotiation, and thats what it really comes down to as an adult,
respecting the opinion of the other is necessary, before you can get
your own way. If you don't have that initail empathy , it becomes a tug
of war, and usually the more sensitive person looses. Not very
methodical or predictable.
What you suggest to your daughter contains one of the great secrets of
negotiation. (and no I don't know the rest), I hope it sinks in, and
probably will, if you demonstrate it enough.

were 40, older than me. that doesn't happen to often on band
pages. When I was
younger and went to shows, I would see older people there and
thought what an
oddity, why are they here. Well now I'm the oddity. Thats what I
get for being
a snit,what goes around...
I don't think that music has to always be deep and meaningful to
be quality.
All music elicits some emotional reaction, be it a cheap one or
not. I dig
'squirrel nut zippers' and 'soul coughing', two bands who may
not provoke deep
thought, but are sure a hell of a lot of fun. Also there seems
to be an
upsurge of 'unfeminine' bands the past few years, so times must
be a changin'.
I really like L7, but then again they could also be classified
as a
'penis-envy' band. Hey,take that Donita Sparks though, now
theres some cover
girl material.
My favorite Donita story, albeit a disgusting one goes as
follows: in
response to hecklers in the crowd, in the midst of performing,
she reaches up
under her dress, into her vagina, yanks out her tampon and
throws it in
hecklers face. A unique girl to say the least, and not what I
would call
feminine.

Where is Gun Sluts?
I'd say that they're shootin' and atootin',
whorin' and a pourin'
their love into a musicless void...
I moved house and now live with a 6'10" body builder, 27 years old. I now get to wake up to the
joys of Ozzi, Megadeth, Metallica, and Judas Priest. I must say a new experience... Ozzi does have
an interesting voice. Or is it the way his voice is mixed? While I'm waiting for mj to get down
and boogie I'll just to listen to other stuff even if it is renis pock...

I pegged Alanis Morrissette as cheese.
Sometimes I like Cheese.
I like women. I like men. I understand anger and pain in song. It is
simply blues. Alanis was unfortunate and fortunate enough to be the
first blueswoman to come along in a long while.
The sexism in the industry and pop culture is thriving.

Okay, okay. I'm sure you guys have become sick of hearing from
me, but
tough it out some more. I have to ask you guys, what
constitutes
"penis-envy"?? Just because women in music are aggressive and
sing about
whatever the fuck they want to does not (!!) mean that they have
penis-envy. That's like saying that females can only make music
of one
kind, and that one kind has to be passive and wholesome. I
mean, what
the fuck?! When Alanis Morrissette came out, people were
constantly
pegging her the "angry chick singer", as if women aren't allowed
to be
dissatisfied with what's out there. Yet, the same people always
herald
male bands and singers who sing about the SAME thing (ex. Tool,
Rage
Against the Machine, and billions of others). Penis-envy?? I
don't think
so. I think it's more like women are coming out with what they
want to
do. So people should just take them as they are instead of
trying to tag
them as wanna-be's.

Yes, 40 does seem to be sneaking up, closer than I would like to admit. I
actually like myself better older though.. I'm healthier, look better, and
feel better. When I was 18. I was a junkie weighing in at 95 lbs.,at 6ft tall
thats not very attractive. Now I'm 36, married with 2 kids, active in my
community and run my own business.
It's been a long, strange trip and I don't know how I ended up so lucky to
survive and come out with so much. I have a feeling though, my karma is to
learn a few lessons yet. In April my son turned 13, last week he came home
with a hickey on his neck and he's also sporting a new attitude. We live in a
tight little nieghborhood and often kids in their early 20's on will hang out
here, in fact I have many friends in this age group. Well its funny how
quickly the gap closes, my son was just 10 and they were say 19,20. Now hes
13, they're 22,23. Their doesn't seem to be such a difference now. I don't
kmow, its hard to explain.
I am not looking forward to being the parent of a teen. Thirteen seems so
young to have a 'love bite', then I recall what I was doing at 13. I really
shelter him and don't let him do to much, hes a straight A student and a great
kid, but I have to let him go a bit and I'm so afraid. I remember what it was
to be young and wild, I had a ball and didn't give two damns about what my
parents said. But I have many friends who died. What could I possibly say to
my son to make him listen, when I dont know what someone could have said to
me.. his life is much different than mine was and we do have great
communication skils, but young is young and not worrying about consequences,
and not feeling guilt aboout beiing self-centered and self-serving is what
makes being young so great. Also I still enjoy my weed to chill oout at the
end of the night. I hide it from my kids, so hypocritical. Parenting makes me
reevaluate many things, many of which I'd rather not. Thanks for letting me
vent.
On a lighter note: I LOVE the Violent Femmes!! One band I have yet to see live
and would love to. Also the one city I tell everyone I want to visit most is
San Francisco. When I was younger in the pre-punk days when music
was, journey, hair bands etc. I was very in to the sixties haght-ashbury music.
The airplane, strawberry alarm clocks, buffalo springfield, and such... I don't
have penis envy, I have 'lea-envy'. I'm always looking for books set in San
Fran, last read all of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City, and loved it. You
live in what I think is probably the most beautiful city in the world. Were
you there for the quake?
Another stupid question: Are eucalyptus trees as fragrant as the eucalyptus
you buy in florist shops?
Re: the marr quote; My thirtieth year was a turning point in my life and has
only gotten better since. I quit a 3 pack a day cigarette habit, got my
drivers license, and started running and lifting weights. Most important of
all, after perceiviing myself as weak and irresponsible for years, I
discovered that I was just the opposite and had many strengths and talents. I
guess its also when I finally realized that the only opinion of myself that
matters is the one I have of myself. I also agree that matt speaks highly to
our age group, we seem to grow together. Dusk really seemed to touch onmany
issues faciing me at the tiime it was released. Slow emotion replay still gets
me every time I hear it. Didn't realize he was a lennon fan, I vividly
remember the night he was killed. Some guy I was dating and I drove to NY and
sat cryiing outside the dakota with many others. I've also seen many great
shows, used to dig gang of four, madness, lena lovitch, dead kennedy's etc..
One of my first shows was my most memorable, I was aboout 15, saw Bowie at the
tower theatre as ziggy stardust. This concert became the double album-bowie
live!! Not thats my goal, to look as good as bowie at 50, damn he still looks
great, noone ever looks at him like hes old.

I loved your views on San Fran. I'm always looking for new images to implant
in my brain. Liviing on haight street, how cool> I imagine you take it for
granted, but for today remember that too many people that is one historical,
cool street, and you are lucky lady. I love looking at pictures of that area
with the old, victorian 3 story houses. Like the grateful dead house. They are
without a doubt, architectully the most beautiful houses around. I just think
the images of the golden gate bridge, the hills, and the cable cars along with
the aura of the city, conjure up such a romantic, exciting city. Of coourse I
love my own hometown, which is Philadelphia. We also have soome very, old
beautiful buildings. Sadly, soome of the cities oldest, most architectically
ornate hoomes are iin nieghborhoods that now look like beirut. The erosion of
some historic neighborhoods is most upsetting to see occur. I am very much an
east coast, urban girl. Philadelphia has a lot of the perks of ny, without a
lot of the agro. I can still drive anywhere easily, park out froont of my
house, but also walk or bike anywhere too. We have the security of small
neighborhoods and communites, but I can get downtown in 10 minutes{have made
it iin 6, my best time}. Plus if yoou want, Ny is only a hop, away. When I was
yoounger, we would go many weekends too see shows, mainly the b-52's at max's.
i'd tellmy mom I was sleeping at a friends. We would go up, party and pogo
till club closed, then sleep it off in car and head hoome.Probably did this at
least 20tiimes and never got caught. Partying with new order must have been
great. I'm a big fan. Also love the stones and beatles. I NEVER listen to this
stuff at all any more for various reasons, yet lately I have been working
every other week at a place where I can only access, the 'classic' station.
Heariing so many songs after so long, it chills me.
When I was yoounger, I wanted to boff Felix Cavilierre(?),I loved the yoooung

I wasnt as lucky to have such good communication ith my parents. My dad was an
abusive alcoholic, and my mom was usually working or trying to keep peace in
the house. As the oldest of 4, I had a lot of responsibilty, and I think that
when I finally got soome freedom, I went hog-wild. What my mom told me aboout
drugs was to mainly watch out for people slipping me mickeys, and that it would
make you nuts. My dad is a drunken storyteller, his main story was always

his money and then shot mayonnaisse in his arm instead of herion. He said they
had to cut that guys arm off right there. His sergeant took a saber and sliced
it right off in front of my dad. Yes, I actually believed this story for
years. He also told me he was in the army with elvis and that he played ball
with wilt chamberlain. Its a wonder I'm not physcho. what I tell my kids are
that it will be your friends who offer you drugs and they are fun to do, at
first. They make you feel peppy, or drunken spacy or whatever. I tell them, if
they weren't fun and made you nuts the first time, do you think they would be
so popular. I explain that the problems arise because yoou want to feel good
all the time and do it more and more, which in turn makes life more difficult
to deal with. I tell them that even thoough the odds are that no extreme harm
will come to them the first couple of times yoou do them, you are always
taking a risk. I also tell them why crack and herion should NEVER be tried not
even once. Its hard to stress this without sounding like its ok to try other
drugs. They know I feel pot is a safer alternative to alcohol, because pot
will never cause violence. Apathy, yes but not violence. Peer pressure is the
biggest obstacle I think. The 'hickey' incident is an example: My son is
extremely handsome, but also very innocent and naive. He is in many ways still
a yooung boy,but he looks very much thirteen and hip. Well the girl who he was
'going out' with was very aggressive and in the 'cool crowd', he was flattered
that she liked him. I told him I was most upset aboout his neck because I
didn't think he was ready for or comfortable with 'making out', but he did it
anyway. I said its going to be the same instance when it comes to drinking,
and dooing drugs, and what are you going to do then? Althoough he didn't say
it, I coould tell I was right and it gave him food for thought.
It felt good to read of your experiences and how well you both turned out, I
feel guilty often because I am such a wuss in keeping punishments sometiimes.

I have an inquiry. My older friend mentioned to me that he is looking is
looking for a vinyl copy of the Uncertain Smile single. Apparently it has
a superb version of Uncertain Smile with a flute instead of the harpsicord
sounding instrument. He says he's heard it and reckons it's cool; his
sister has it but won't sell it to him.
What version would this be? Anyone else out there like it?

I have it on tape and it was a Japanese 12 inch that a friend had long
ago.
Overall , Its a really good cut, but the Jules Holland end (Piano, I
beleive), is much stronger. Perhaps overall the flute version is a bit
more charming, but not because of the ending. I don't know if this was
ONLY on the Japanese single, or if the Japanese one I got was just a
copy of some other release, but yes I like it, too.
I think the flute ending one is more rock and roll sounding, ober the
whole, and in a subtle way, while the Jules Holland one is more moody.
Hard to beat that piano ending. My tape deck dies and I haven't heard
that cut in a long time.

Sure, we all do. But that's not my point.
I was out and about in Boston and I picked up some stuff thatI wanted to
ask such experts as yourselves about.
1)I bought for six bucks a Slow Emotion Replay single with 3 mixes of
Dogs of Lust on it. It's one disk of a two part set and I want to get the
second disk, released 12th April 1993 (supposedly). Somehow, I doubt it
actually exists though.
2)I bought both the Infected 12" single and Soul Mining 12" LP for a few
bucks and since I already have them on CD, I wondered if anyone out there
might want them. I'm not looking for money since anyone could probably
find them anywhere, but if you have something small, music-related and
expendable that you *might* consider maybe trading for, I'll listen.
Otherwise, I'll probably just give them to whomever asks for them first,
maybe.
For those of you who've left for the summer, bye. For those of you
sticking it out, good for you. I'm off now, but good luck to you all in

Ha ha, nice title. :-)
1 It exists. Is yours the one in the thin box, or the special double
box? There was one of each. I think there were 3 Dusk singles that
were 2 part -- Slow Emotion Replay, Dogs of Lust, and maybe Love is
Stronger than Death? I can't remember for sure but the cover is white.
2 These may be rare depending on which ones they are. If the Infected
single is the one with the ejaculating devil, hold on to it. It's rare.
If the Soul Mining LP is the one with a woman on the cover smoking a
cigarette, this is an early release and is pretty hard to come by. This
copy also doesn't have Perfect.

Of each of those 2-part singles, the first part came in a double box, and
the second part came in a single (thin) box, the theory being you could
put part 2 in the double box with part 1 and throw away the extra single
box (yeah, right). They all do exist, as you say, for the titles you mention.

Not "an early release" but the normal cover for the UK release. Early
copies came with Perfect 12", later copies did not. The ones that did had
a removable sticker on the cover advertising the extra 12" single.

wow, speak of the ejaculating devil, I just recently 'scored' both parts
of the two-CD set... the second disc has 'Slow Emotion Replay' and
'Scenes from "Arctic Twilight" i)Ancient Lights ii)Wounded
iii)Balloon iv)Unseasonable Weather v)Arctic Twilight'... wow, long
title... I got both CD's and both the double-CD box and thin box... they
were taped together and I bought it at a used record store (it was Hotwax
Skot, did I beat you to this gem?)... I was just about to ask this list
too about how rare this set was...
it's good to see the list pick up again, and I especially liked all the
mail I got with 'penis-rock' in the subject line...

Hey, Not nice.
I was closing an application by mistake just from
seeing the title.
Did I mention I wasn't saving first ?
And I said to myself "It can't be. No way".
False alarm.
Nice one.
Thanks,
Itai.

Just got back to the (Lower) Haight, San Francisco, where I call home,
from a road trip to LA. Why, you ask? Well, I'm moving to the land of the
deeply intellectual and truly humanitarian! Why, pray tell, would I move
to this (La Brea) tar pitt of the socialy challenged and Barbie-wanna-be's
from the truly free and beutiful Bay Area? Well, I'm a native of the area,
and I need to break out before I become too stagnant and live in the real
world with all it's drama, and finishing school is a good excuse to do so,
being 27 is kind of forcing me to look at the big picture. I still have no
idea what I want to do with my life, but I'm begining to accept myself for
who I am, and if I really want to conquer the world (New York?) someday,
I'd better start on the West Coast first, eh?
I think this list has helped to keep me grounded to fact that some people,
globally, are aware and appriciate a true original like MJ. I think that
will help alot when dealing with everything I have ever known to contrast
myself with such certainty so far away. Every time fate has sent me
propelling in a different direction than the path chosen, I always play
"This is the Day". Just about every god damn word in that song rings true.
Anyway, enough of the babble for now. If anyone has any inspiring thoughts
for this late starter of life, or even a cool place to hang out in
Hollywood, yes I know, nothing can compare to Noc Noc on the Haight, but I
need to start somewhere, and so far, I've enjoyed the input from the list,
thanks and I hope to hear from you all soon,
Janice.

WERE neighbors!
Good LUCK!

Since I can't find any info about it anywhere, and email to thethexxx@aol.com
hasn't gotten me anywhere, does anyone know if the ablum is coming, already
here, etc?
My quote on aol gets me some strange IM's: "Still soul minning the infected
mind bomb in my burning blue soul at dusk." <<<<
Since I'm new to the list, thanks in advance for any help.
Forever soul minning,
Kerig
