IS ANYBODY OUT THERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Come on guys! All I get is subscribe and unsubscribe notices -
is anyone left on this damn list? Doesn't ANYBODY have ANYTHING
to say about the The? Behfar, how many people are there left, anyway?
Allright, let me try to get the ball rolling. A few months (!!!!?!!) ago I
asked
what everybody's favorite lyrics are. Not the song whose lyrics you like the
best, but a particular section of lyrics, and why you like it and what it means
to you.
If you are bored by that, then please by all means feel free to say something
else about the The, but please SAY SOMETHING!!!!!
Another idea.....how do you feel about Matt's depiction of sexuality?
How does it mesh or contrast with your own?
Geez......I feel like an English teacher!

Hmmmm.....I guess I need to see Dusk till Dawn.
Once while I was still on AOL, after I had just posted something in
the the The folder, I recieved an Instant Message from Rendad (the
screen name of Steve Rennie, Matt's manager), saying he had seen
my message and wanted to talk to me. He lets anybody and
everybody use his account, so I have no idea who I was talking to.
At one point this person claimed to be "Louise," a worker for Steve,
but this person seemed very male. Anywayse, he/she/it told me
that they knew of stories about Matt's sex life that would "make
my toes curl." All highly anecdotal but who knows? Later on
Rendad left a message saying he had a bunch of people up
and they were getting drunk and he let them mess around with
the computer. He says it was probably D.C. Collard, who is
know to be something of a "bad boy." Again, who knows.

This is what I like about his depiction of sexuality....it is sometimes
uncomfortable,
but usually right on the mark (perhaps why it is so discomfiting!) He discusses
the naked feelings we all feel but about which so little is written.
Most popular music either romantically sugar coats sex or makes it laughable,
dirty, or pornagraphic. He writes some very truthful songs, that are still
sexy and even moving (i.e. "Beyond Love"), without being sickening or smutty.

Thanx for airing your discontent, we need a bit more of it. Perhaps, doing
this will get the ball rolling. I couldn't even get a 'Piss-Off' to my last
post.
>Another idea.....how do you feel about Matt's depiction of sexuality?
- ---Seems a bit seedy to me. Or was that realistic. Anyhow, I garnered much
more insight after viewing from Dusk till Dawn this past week. Seems MJ is
quite versed/intimate with the adult-entertainment world (an opinion). As to
the extent of this. . .I've only heard rumors. It seems he's been following
the "service providing" aspect since 'Out of the Blue...', both lyrically and
visually.
>How does it mesh or contrast with your own?
- ---I think, Matt is writing about the more 'unsavory' features to expose the
darker side of the human condition. He's poking at the those repressed
feelings/actions for answers. Thus, a favorite lyric is spawned (one of many
favorites):
"Well my adrenaline was curdling like cream--as I was being led by the
hand. Through the sound of sirens--and the distant noise of some drunken jazz
band."
- -------I did answer the question did'nt I?

I can definitely relate. And yes you are obsessed. :-)
On another note, I just thought I'd write in and let everybody out
there in The The land know that there are still a few of us left on
here. One of these days when I'm not so damn busy I'll write up my
answer to the favorite lyrics / sexuality questions. Until then, later...

I've heard exactly nothing. I can only assume that nobody else has
heard anything either, and that's why the list has been so slow lately.
On a different note, I have just had incredible luck finding The The
stuff lately! A month and a half ago, I found The The vs. Hank used
for $15; a little while after that my brother WON the Hanky Panky
wooden box and gave it to me (he liked the music, but knew that a
collectable meant more to me than it would to him, so I'm just going to
buy him the CDs); a week ago my brother came up with the Perfect 12";
and yesterday I found the Infected 12" and the Heartland 12" for $5
each! Unfortunately, these last two are pretty dirty, so I'll have to
give them a good cleaning before I play them again. I tried to play
Flesh and Bones because I've never heard it before but it sounded
really bad and skipped a couple times, so I didn't listen to it all.
Sorry, just had to brag a little bit. :-)
I also saw the 12" of Beaten Generation but didn't buy it because I
already have it. It was in the paper sleeve, not the cardboard one.
If anybody wants it, I could go buy it then mail it to you, or else put
you in contact with the store where I saw it. Just drop me a line. Later...

Does anyone have any idea how I can get hold of the videos off of "Mind

someone in netland knows better).
I used to have access to MTV Europe a while back but the Vids only turned

okay i'm in a totally wacko, yes more than normally. rambling about sex.
obsession isn't necessarily a bad thing, it is out of hand; however, if one
start drooling incessantly. ;)
as for the sex thing, those puritans who settled the US did us no favors by
mystifying sex. i attribte the breakdown of families and realtionships in
general because we Americans,( WARNING: generalization here, not meant to
categorize all peoples, persons or wannabes) romantize far too much the
concept of love. I would rather marry a very good friend than someone who
was a killer under the sheets so to speak. Once the interest in the partner
is gone what is left to the relationship?
Unfortunately, my experience has been that the very person who would have
filled that role preferred to think with his penis and not look at our
relationship. We met because I had a Skinny Puppy t-shirt on and he, a Mind
Bomb one. We were insepearable for 1 year. People kept asking when the
wedding was...Here was a very good friend, someone who i spend entire
weekends with just doing whatever, studying, eating, watching movies. And he
basically said, i really love you, alot in fact, but i'm not attracted to
you. And I prefer to get my sex from so and so.
No wounded hearts here or asking for pity, I'm too old for that. The result?
He's had 20-25 casual realtionships with total bimbos, by his own admission.
And is still looking for the perfect woman, which by his own admission,
would be me if I looked differently. At least he admits his failings...
So what does Matt write about, just what i described, that total paradox of
knowing what you should do and then not doing it. He writes about the
desparation of knowing that you're nothing more than a sexual appetite to be
fed, "She was lying ther like a stuck pig...(not good at exact quotes but
hopefully y'a;; get the idea)". He sings about the loneliness of being right
next to someone but light years away, Kingdom of Rain. He writes about the
emotional gravitation towards someone, Gravitate to Me.
He sings about my life actually, and all those crazy mixed-up emotions that
have no place to go sometimes. He writes about the depraved and the deprived
and everything in between; the bonds and the fragments, the obsession and the
less-than-savory seedy world of sex.
Every actually been to some of the clubs specializating in er, hem, sexual
gratification in booths? Very scary...Ever scanned the bulleting boards on
sex? Again, very scary...It frightens me that there are enough people out
there lurking looking for a 12 year old girl to mate with the bull terrier
while in chains and being whipped. People actually ask for stories to be
written about rape, incest, and every fetish know to man and woman kind.
Hmm, but that'a another mailing list.
So is sex just another function like eating and expelling? It certainly
would make things easier maybe.
So there, more information and opinion than I bet you were looking for!
cheers, euthelene soon not to be AOL! yeah

Great question.
I need to think. Shit. (BTW, wonderful name for the Saloon.)
Maybe: (with lung shadows in the background) "Come closer to me".

Had to change the Subject line. The word "sexuality" just drew
everybody's eyes directly to my monitor whenever they walked into my office.
I'm going to try to buy a good record cleaning kit today (I should have
bought one a long time ago) so I'll probably listen to it tonight. I'd
also like to hear the remix of Infected on that other 12" I bought. As
for the other songs, I thought Three Orange Kisses was all right, kind
of wierd. I couldn't tell if my turntable was speeding up and slowing
down, or if that was the song! I think that might be one that I have
to listen to a few times to get used to. I've found some of his stuff
is like that. And some of them turn out to be some of my favorite
stuff. I remember the first time I heard Infected (the album, not just
the song) was some time in 86 or 87 and I didn't really like it. I
thought it was too strange. It wasn't until about 6 months or a year
later that I listened to it again, and thought "Hey, this is really
good stuff!", and then bought Soul Mining too, and liked that even
better. Now I don't really know which album is my favorite. It really
depends on my mood, but I think I'd have to stand in the minority and
say that if I had to pick 1 favorite, it would be Dusk. Maybe becuase
when it came out, it just perfectly fit my life. I don't know, but I
think that Matt is definitely getting better with each album he releases.
Back to the original topic though. I think Angel is kind of cool. My
first impression was that it sounded like a lot ot the songs from Mind
Bomb all mixed together into one. Do you know what the B-Side to
Perfect is? And if it's any good? My brother said he listened to it
and it was good, but he didn't remember the name of it. I'm anxious to
get some of that stuff cleaned up and see how it sounds after a good
cleaning!
On another topic, was it you that recommended the new Foetus album?
Well, somebody said that they would describe it as a cross between The
The and NIN, so I was sold. I went out and bought it a couple months
ago. Wierd stuff. That's another album that definitely took some
getting used to. Now I really like it. I think one of my favorites on
there would be "Take it Outside Godboy". I just love the way it starts
out! Very angry. I can relate. What's his older stuff like?
I went ahead and Cc'd the list on this one, so you'll probably get it
twice. I thought that some of this might spark some discussion. And
if it wasn't you that recommended Foetus, maybe whoever it was is still
on here... Later...

Hi all!
I just bought the _I Saw the Light_ CD5 and all the songs on it are all great... the three songs besides the title track could easily go on _Hanky Panky_... which leads to my question: were these three songs originally recorded by Hank Williams?... the songwriting credits do not acknowledge Williams at all... if they are not HW songs, then what made MJ record them?...
on other fronts, I picked up _Sink_ by Foetus about a month ago... for those who've forgotten, _Sink_ is a compilation of Foetus' (and all his other aliases') work in the 80's... after listening to the CD, I can see the influence of TheThe on Foetus (or is it the other way around?)... the material on _Sink_ is very reminiscent of the strange and wonderful synthesizer and percussion effects found on TheThe albums, especially _Infected_... the lyrical themes of Foetus are also very TheThe-ish... however, I find Matt's lyrics to be much more subtle, poetic and diverse than the lyrics offered by Foetus... Foetus' lyrics all tend to be about doing what you should do even if it's opposed by the status quo and he literally smacks you on the side of the head with it:
"You tell the thruth you go to the guillotine / you lose your head but your conscience is clean / don't buy into no one else's dream / Say what you mean and say it mean / Like a ramrod ramrod ramrod ramrod"
- Ramrod
"I refuse to endure vacuum worship / you may call me the fugitive soul / I got a hard line from the great dictator / cos' I didn't confess to father masturbator / They wanted to see if I'd float in a concrete overcoat / They wanted to see if I'd still be laughing / if they crushed me with falling masonry"
- Halo Flamin' Lead
Foetus even has a song titled "The Only Good Christian is a Dead Christian"(!!!)... anyway, these lyrics can get tiresome... and like somebody else said on the list, musically, its like NIN on some crazy hallucinatory drugs...
I've been struggling with the question of favorite lyrics for so long... it's so hard to pick just one... but I think I would choose (I don't know if anybody's mentioned this one yet):
"How could you believe that the life within the seed / that grew arms that reached / and a heart that beat / and lips that smiled / and eyes that cried / could ever die?"
actually, looking at these lyrics right now, they don't look all that great but it's really powerful when placed in the context with the rest of the lyrics and the music... it always gives me that "gee, life is wonderful sad" feeling...
and lastly (sorry about this long post... should I have split this up?)... does anyone know how I can get a hold of pkastner@indiana.edu?... I was one of those people who've received tapes from him and for the past two months, I've been trying to thank him but my messages keep getting bounced from his mailserver... is he still on this list?... does he have a new e-mail address?... is he reading this?... if you are please e-mail me and let me know your new address and if not, does anyone know how I can reach him?...
thanks for reading...

Hope so, but I doubt it. I just picked it up in May for about $7 from
this record store in Indianapolis. They had 2 of them, and I took the
best one.

yes, i noticed that too. and it is johnny marr. ian mcculloch and marr
were working on a project together but the master tapes were stolen and
the project was sort of dropped after that. then ian and will sergeant
formed electrafixion and they have put out two singles, "zephyr" and
"lowdown", so far. the album, "burned", comes out the end of this month.

Depends on my mood, and they're often hard to think of off the top of
your head, BUT, two lines that always catch my attention no matter how
many times I hear them are:
>From Armegeddon Days -- "God doesn't even go to church!"
>From Twilight Hour "You're cutting chunks from your heart, and rubbing
the meat into you eye"
Of course there are tons of others on all the other albums, but I'm
listening to Soul Mining right now...

This is a no brainer for me:
Everyone in your family/says that you lucky
But the side of you they'll never see/is when your left alone
with the memories that hold you life together like glue.
I've never seen this one quoted, so am I the only freak out here
that is overly sentimental? Just curious.

I would have to agree with this analysis, i.e. the biblical spin, but
with a different interpretation. Seven also might refer to the day of
rest, and because there is no rest for the wicked (MJ's major theme), there
is no seven. I do have a question as to why "3" was not omitted, as it is
another one of those biblical numbers pertaining to completion and
wholeness. (Wow! I finally get to use that Sunday school training!)

OK, I'm listening to BBS right now, so I've got some more favourite
lyrics that I remembered. :-)
"When it HIT me like a Thunderbolt!!!
I don't know nothing -- and I'm scared that I never will"
from Another Boy Drowning
and
"I know I'm nowhere near perfection
...I'm pointing in the wrong direction"
from Delirious
Since I'm on the topic of BBS, what do people think of this album? I
like it, lyrically speaking, but I can't get into the music as much as
I can the later stuff. I mean, the music is ok, and very unique for
it's day, but it just doesn't "speak to me" like some of his other
stuff does. Does anybody agree with me on this, or am I all alone
among the "purists"? IMHO, BBS needs a drum set, and a little more
rythm. For example, I much prefer the later, live releases of Another
Boy Drowning to the one on BBS (even though he leaves out some lyrics
now). The music just makes it easier to get in to the song. I think
it would be cool if he would re-record BBS -- same lyrics, but play the
music the way he plays it now.
Don't get me wrong, I think its a good album, and it's great insight
into Matt, especially when you consider that he wrote and performed it
as a teenager. I suppose I'll get flamed a bit for this, but I want to
hear what the rest of you think...
BTW, this is unrelated, but how old is Matt / what year was he born?

- ---------I really like the album and the approach, but I can't get over that
damn vocal-harmonizer. I think MJ abandoned that harmonizer for today's
breathy-verb sound (could'nt be more pleased). AND-- lyric writing is a
maturation process. Lennon's first few lyrics did'nt exactly shake the Earth:
nevertheless, they are wielded nicely, even if they don't address a "sore
spot."
>IMHO, BBS needs a drum set,<

throw in the "standard" approach to making music.

the infected book has been out of print for quite some time. if yu didn't
grab it when it was out, you will never find it. it's neat, lots of andy dog
paintings, lyrics, and early reviews, among other things.
i believe matt was born in 62. if i am wrong, it is only by a year or two in
either direction.
i have always loved burning blue soul. i think i like it more than mind
bomb. it is so honest, and the music really fits the confessional style of
the words. i like the way the vocals are obscured, although i do like the
style today more. but there is something that has always appealed to me
about that album, a style of songwriting matt had that he doesn't have
anymore. not that i am saying today's writing is better or worse than the
old stuff, only different.
and music is still trying to catch up with the sound of that album. way
ahead of it's time.
on another note, the new mercury rev album is fantastic, for those who like
that sort of thing.

the first pressing with the cool cover would go for that, but the one with

I was always under the impression that he hated the USA. It never bothered me
much because I'm not crazy about it either :)

This was *probably* the DNA remix 12". It was a white-label release in a plain
black sleeve with no credits anywhere. The only text anywhere on the package
was the word "ARMAGEDDON" rubber-stamped on one side and "VIOLENCE" on the
other. I'm more partial to the Armageddon Days remix than the Violence of
Truth, but they're both decent "alternate" remixes. I've never known whether
they were official/authorized or not.

Yes I should of explained, I have that copy but I heard a real dance, version
which was mainly just instrumental, Im clutching at straws as it may have

Very acute observation,
I'd wing-it and say that Matt is making an argument for destiny. As the
numeral 7 has been associated with good fortune i.e. luck. If I could tie
this theory in with something, I would most likely look toward the lyric of
"Gravitate to Me"--certainly a stance on kindred souls (spirits), the
importance of the body, and their intrinsic struggle (stardom). Whether
this Luck v. Fate facet has anything to do with the "I've been waitin..."
issue, I can only speculate and apply (as I tend to do with many theThe
lyrics).

The leaves are turning colours and it is "that" season once again, the
eternal renewal of fall, as all that "is" nature dies in the prelude to the
birth of new life of the coming spring. The sadness, sullen yet the
knowledge that the present death will soon be replaced be the birth of the
"new." I drink as the knowledge of my impending demise creaps ever closer
over me, like the storm clouds over the skies of an early morning of a sunny
day. Each day provides the attrition of my self asteem. Soon the erotion
will leave me bare and the truth shall be revealed, why do I exsist? I have
no value to anyone. I am a living breathing piece of refuse if the wind
catches me and I blow away no one will know, not even me.
And on a lighter note!
I found the name of the Pub. Matt's parents pub according to Caren Myers is
named "Two Puddings" and is located in the "East End" of London, UK. This
is old information though and may or may not be up to date as it was printed
in the April 1993 issue of "Details" magazine.
Couple of Questions
1.) "Gun Sluts" ? Why that name, is it a comment on American(read North
American)loose morals about firearms (NRFA.) Or is it a sex thing like
David Bowie's "Criminal world" or parish the thought Aerosmiths "DLLAL."
2.) Has anyone heard anything about the new Electronic John Maher/Bernard
Sumner project? Is it out yet.
3.) I guess I'm just getting old but, do movies like "Pulp Fiction"
"Reservoir Dogs" and "Natural Born Killers" leave you feeling very
uncomfortable. Is it possible this is the idea of "Gun Sluts." Looks like
entertainment but feels like decay!
Finally, I just attended the Canadian Music Video Awards in Toronto. Got'a
hate nationalism in music. Everything from a Pseudo spritual
Doors/Zep clone bands in "The Tea Party" all the way to Fat Boy Suburban
acapella pseudo intellectual band like "The Bare Naked Ladies."
If the choices were Beavis and Butthead, This Awards show or a Colt 45 in my
mouth, I think I'd be choose'in the sweet warm taste of gun powder. Anyway.
This has been better than analysis.
Your's Sincerely
The Angry Guy

Do you mean Elextrafiction(sp?) with Maher and Mccolough from Echo and the
Bunneymen? A single has been released.

Uncomfortable? Yes I hope so in some degree. That is why I like them so much!
