Greetings all,

I am new to this conference but have been an avid
The The listener long enough to find this place.

Many believe Matt Johnson is quite the prophet and
I am one who has been affected by his thoughts in an
inspirational way (and I am sure I am not alone).
Considering this, it should be a joy to hear what
you all may have to add to his insights.

Approximately how many folk do we have here?

I am not a groupie but I truely admire the
perfectly chosen words of wisdom from a sincerely
gifted artist.

I hope to speak to many of you while I am here.

...and hello to Mr. Qunicy, if you are listening.

I know that Lisa Gerrard did some stuff by herself. Has anyone heard any
of it? Is it any good?

Lisa Gerrard has a solo album called the Mirror Pool. I love it,
actually I think it works better as an album than most DCD recordings. Get

Lisa Gerrards solo album is okay...but it's not as moody as the regular
DCD albums. Even though it contains a couple of DCD tracks, it's just not
as dark...

song on it is amazing- I think it's called Hot Ice (i might be wrong
seeing as it is a fairly recent purchase)- I think it is one of the best
songs to play super loud when going to sleep at 4:30 in the morning.
I was just wondering if anyone else feels the same as i do or thinks that
i have to be insane to like this song so much- to tell you the truth I
have been having my own doubts concerning my sanity recently- maybe
someone could help me? (just kidding- I really do think I'm sane)

The new album, working title UNTITLED is almost finished. Matt and the band,
Eric Schermerhorn, guitar, Earl Harvin, drums, and Spencer Campbell, bass,
have been recording in New York throughout this year with engineer and
co+producer Bruce Lampcov. The music is now finished and Matt is working on
the lyrics and vocals at the moment. They are aiming to be mixing in
January-February with a May-June release. There will be a world tour starting
next summer with extensive touring of North America throughout the year.
The band has been stripped down to a four piece. Out go keyboards and
harmonica, for a rougher, more up tempo feel.
There will be about 16 tracks on the new album. Which is much more than any
previous TheThe album.
We have let the web site wither away at the moment but we will be providing
extremely wide internet coverage of all the activities of next year. The band
prefer to have a very low profile when they are working. Which is why there
has been no information circulating.
Hope this info is sufficient. Please pass it around.
We look forward to seeing you next year.

I picked this up second hand a couple of months ago myself, and was
most impressed. At the same time I managed to grab 12" version of
Gravitate and Sweet bird.

Ok - basic plea - do any of the members of the group hailing from New
Zealand know of any places to pick up theThe CD singles?

I think I've exhuasted almost every avenue - only place I haven't
tried is the campus bookshop at Canty.

I've scroured all over Auckland with no success. Real Groovy Records
has some vynil singles, and only a couple of the CD's.. which you could
find damned near everwhere anyways.

I've got one more card up my sleeve, I'll check it out tomorrow and
let you know if it pans out... Revival Records.

Hello,

Sorry about my subscription fu.. up..

It's nice to see there is going to be a new album.
Nice of Matt to update us on the progress as well.
I'm betting the album is going to be worth the wait.
A lot of the more experienced artists are going for the
"stripped down rock sound" eg. Tom Petty's latest
as well as Elvis Costello's. Anybody want to venture
a guess as to the thematic ideal ??? Anyway keep
on trading and at least I know there is going to be
one good show in 97....

Yeah
I 'll indulge this:

Every time I hear the final track from Hanky Panky called "I Can't Escape
>From You." I find myself in a cinema noire scene in the back seat of a 1957
Chevy.
In the dark I hear the rain, the hum of the bias ply white wall tires as we fly
down the interstate. The only light is that of the dashboard and the on coming
traffic. I'm pissed drunk nearly passed out on the left hand side of the
seat. In my sureal alcoholic stupor and haze I look left through the rain
soaked window at the passing headlights. My stomach heaves, and I turn to
the right, I see Hank's face
illuminated with one of the passing cars headlights, he's almost green. I
know he's so close to death, but I'm paralysed with my own inebriation, I
try to move to help but the nausea overwhelms me to the point that I almost
pass out. My consciousness lapses momentarily but as the next cars headlight
refect off the
back window I look to see if he is still breathing. The light seems almost
to strobe as I reached Hank, he vomits over himself. I hold his head up,
but I know
it's too late, he's gone. It ends here as you hear the "This is Hank
Williams speak'in for all the boys, say'in if the good lords will'in and
your creeks don't rise
we'll see you before long, and untill then... (I see this in old 1" B&W
Grand Old
Opry crapped outvideo footage.)

It's great! A good fast beat to it.

On the same vynil single thingie there was a song
called "Disturbed".. A very boomy-drummy song with no

I guess what I'm getting at is, the The makes music no one else on earth

Pete,
Firstly, this is not a page. A mailing list "duh!" But in all fairness,
your opinion is welcome. Just ponder this, have you ever listened to a
group which has not grown in some way? If not, try the aforementioned
Electronic album. Not a turkey, but it sure does'nt rank up there with
Abbey Road, Sweet Jane, or Hawaii- visitors compilation. Thus, I feel Matt
is flinging the crutch. Not to go off on too great of a tangent; expect the
same type of re-invention from U2 (another great band) trip hop-I can't
wait. Good bands like Poison (gagging on my own vomit) can remake previous
albums....but, we're after the shit. Our Mattsiah will convert a
hunterer-and-gather to a full-fledged pontificating nomad. Anybody care to
bet otherwise? Don't sweat the detals. Have fa*th.

Jesus Christ, is that a joke. I would've like it better if U2 went country.

And Ian - talk dirty to me.

I agree with Ian to the point that I'm sure we wont be disapointed with
the album, but I do wish he had kept the harmonica in.

I can't believe people are getting upset about losing the harmonica, and nobody has
mentioned losing keyboards!

What would "Soul Mining" be without keyboards? It wouldn't be "Soul Mining".

On the other hand, I wouldn't want ANOTHER "Soul Mining" since we already have a
perfect one...I look forward to what Matt's got in store for us.

As for Marr, well, many of you already know how I feel about that. For those who
don't, I can sum up by saying "I'm glad he's gone."

it becomes more and more obvious that what you
would've like (sic) is more of the same. from
whomever it is that we're talking about.

which ignores the basic fact of evolution:
that which does not change grows old and/or dies.

i am in complete agreement with the listmember
who cheered the rumour of U2's upcoming experiment
with trip-hop, and who classified the loss
of moutharp and johnny as a tossing-away of the crutch.

lets see where matt is in 1997: i hope that
he's in 1997 or beyond on this next record.

p.s. what happened to palmer and eller????

Infected,
I've had this day-dream of sorts, that one day I would write and perform
the greatest album known to (wo)man. After years of pontification, I've
decide it would go like this: (In hopes that MJ might adopt my idea)
- - assemble each song from an original short story, hence, each song would
emanate from the character's perspective rather than the writer's. Include
these stories with the album.

The . of this message: Have any of you concocted senarios for Matt's more
touching lyrics? For instance, I always envision a foggy lighthouse with
the keeper walking towards it during "Gravitate...". Perhaps, he going to
bludgeon a beautiful girl which he previously dosed with ether.

Hi! I'm a new infected who has been a the the fan for some years yet. I know
this item must have been discussed several times in the list, but i will
appreciate if someone could send me a clarifying email about the Pornography
of Despair (dated 1982). I'm interested in two things:

1- Is it possible to have it in any form (bootleg tape, collectors item)?
2- Was it never actually released? Was it, in fact recorded? Which songs did
it have?

Grattitude assured.

BTW, does this list have a direct connection to Matt Johnson? I'm a
journalist in Barcelona, and i would be interested in an interview.

And then, lasts question: When is it the next the the release release? Is he
going sometime to Barcelona.

Thank You All

Please, e mail me with further info on what's the new line up as i have
joined the list too late, as it seems. BTW, how popular are The The in UK?
And in USA? I'm from Barcelona and they don't get almost any "air" round=
here.

About Johnny Marr, i think his musical aportation has been important in
making the the achieve an evolution. You mentioned that you dont want
another Soul Mining. I agree. And that's why i think having recruised Marr
has been a good decision. On the other hand, i know Marrs attitude is pure
angst. To sum it up for me, if he's willing to make the the sound better,
and he can bears being the second row guy, then stay. If he tries to drag
down Johnson he can form his own group with, let's say the jetsam of Oasis,
John Squire and, erm..., let's say Morrissey. Got it?
