Ron Atkinson is one of the best known names in English football. He's made several notable contributions to the lingo, and Oliver Irish has compiled a nice set of them. This goes well with the Ronglish tutorial. Just a sample:
cool panic n. a Big Ron-ism out of the top drawer: 'I think that was a moment of cool panic there.'
Hollywood ball n. an ambitious pass.
playing from amnesia n. a derogatory term to describe a player past his sell-by date: 'Winterburn's playing from amnesia.'
watching cartoons n. when a player tries something beyond his capability: 'Savage has been watching cartoons if he thinks he can beat the big Italian from that far out...'
wide awake club n. a loss of concentration (or sleeping) will deny a player membership to this club: 'Beckham's not in the wide awake club tonight Clive.'
The Big Ron tribute page has more Yogi Berra level quotes:
I would not say that he (David Ginola) is one of the best left wingers in the Premiership, but there are none better.'
'They must go for it now as they have nothing to lose but the match.'
'Woodcock would have scored, but his shot was too perfect.' (What happened? Did the goalposts move?)
'Someone in the England team will have to grab the ball by the horns.'
'He's not only a good player, but he's spiteful in the nicest sense of the word.'
