Grid Searcher Project

MDS Resources

  • MDS Basics
  • The Metacomputing Directory Service (MDS) is the information services component of the Globus Toolkit.

The MDS provides a framework for managing static and dynamic information about the status of a computational grid and all its components: networks, compute nodes, storage systems, instruments.

The MDS uses the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAPv3) as a uniform interface to such information.

The LDAP schema, as with all database schemas, is the definition of what can be stored in the directory.

LDIF, for LDAP Data Interchange Format, is typically used to import and export directory information between LDAP-based directory servers, or to describe a set of changes which are to be applied to a directory.

  • MDS Versions
  • MDS 2.1 is the newest version of MDS, which is released along with the Globus Toolkit 2.0 Beta Release package.

    • Here is the schema used for MDS 2.1.
    • More technical information about MDS 2.1 could be found at the Globus MDS 2.1 web site.

MDS 2.1 alpha 2 is the earlier version of MDS that was originally released with version 1.1.3 of the Globus Toolkit.

    • Here is the schema used for MDS 2.1 alpha 2.
    •    Another link
    • More technical information about MDS 2.1 alpha 2 could be found at the Globus MDS 2.1 alpha 2 web site.

  • Available MDS Servers
  • Notice:
    1. "Customized BaseDN" is only applied to MDS 2.1 GIIS. The default base DN for MDS 2.1 GIIS is "Mds-Vo-name=site,o=Grid", but "site" could be renamed at each GIIS. So, the base DN must be explicitly set to the correct value when searching a MDS 2.1 GIIS. In MDS 2.1 alpha 2 or any of the previous MDS versions, each GIIS shares a same base DN, "o=Grid".

    2. Each "Test Availability" link in the "Status" column reports the current status (In Service or Out of Service) of the related MDS GIIS. Please make sure you connect to an in-service GIIS before using Grid Search.

    3. If you want to publish an extra GIIS at this page, please send the detailed information (at least includes "version", "host", "port", "baseDN", and "description") about your GIIS to hai@cs.uchicago.edu.
