| Delius was a British composer of German origin who chose to live in France for most of his life (from 1888 onwards till the end of his life). He was a vehement atheist fascinated by Friedrich Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra parts of which he set to music in his Mass of Life. His Requiem is also inspired by Nietzsche's writing. |
| Text | The text was prepared by Delius and his friend Heinrich Simon based on Nietzsche's Also Sprach Zarathustra and Ecclesiastes. |
| Notes | The Requiem is dedicated to those who died in World War I. Following Beecham it has always been considered one of Delius's lesser works. As a matter of fact Hickox's recent recording seems to be the first. |
