The Digital Nature of Biology

CMSC37701-1, Spring quarter 2004.

This course will explore the digital nature of biology at the molecular scale. We will read papers each week to illustrate this theme. A common subject will be the use of databases (often called "omics" as in genomics and proteomics) to complement physical models. The course will also emphasize using the Web as a database that can be mined for biophysical insights. Use of tools like PubMed will be emphasized.

No particular background is required. We will explore issues in computer science, applied mathematics, physical chemistry and biomedical applications. It is hoped that people from different disciplines will participate. Participants will be expected to make presentations on the papers being studied. The work load will be shared equally, except that the instructor will probably make more presentations than average.

Here is the plan for the first five weeks of the course.

Some Journals for the course.
