L. Ridgway Scott is the son of Larkin Burneal Scott, director of the NOSMO project at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. He gave the project this whimsical name in advance of having a full title for the project. Nosmo King was a name he saw on signs everywhere, although he was himself a life-long smoker of a pack of Chesterfields a day. (Later in life, he used `Nosmo King' as a moniker for mail in Fort Worth when mail to his real name was being forwarded.) One day he was called by the Army nomenclature office to explain the acronym, and after some time he came up with Norden Optical Sight Modification system.

L. Ridgway Scott is the grandson of Calvin Roy Hearne (11 Oct 1889 -- 1918?) and Ima Hodges, who married Roy G. Thomas after Hearne's death. The Hearne family web page.

Ima Hodges was the youngest daughter of Sarah Ellen Garrett and Dabney Ridgeway Hodges. [Sarah Ellen Garrett, b February 13, 1843 on Blue Ridge (present-day Stranger), Falls County, Texas, d January 24, 1941 in San Angelo, Texas and buried in Fairmont Cemetery there - married in Falls County, Texas on August 12, 1869 to Dabney Ridgeway Hodges, b February 10, 1852 in Mississippi, d in San Angelo, Texas May 22, 1922, and had twelve children who survived infancy, plus two who did not.] Sarah Ellen Garrett was the daughter of Thomas McKissick Garrett.
