Thu - December 9, 2004Bulls Rout CavaliersMy father and I caught our first Bulls game
of the season at the United Center on Wednesday night as the
Bulls routed the Cleveland Cavaliers 113-85!
The last 4 games I've been to over the
past 3 seasons have all been blow-outs. Quite frankly, it was a little odd to
be on the winning side of one of these lopsided
scores.
![]() It's good a feeling. Odd, but good. Notes: - Rookie Ben Gordon led the way with 21 pts and displayed a real knack for taking/making some good shots. - Rookie Luol Deng did a fine job staying with LeBron James. - Lebron James had an off night generally, but had a few highlight reel type plays including a block on Hinrich at the end of a quarter. - I don't have to spend any time here defending Tyson Chandler or Eddy Curry as both played solid games tonight. (I used to be a fan of Sam Smith's take on the NBA, especially all of his trade proposals... but his constant beating of the trade drum in regards to Eddy Curry has cooled me considerably to all that) They're both going to be good players. Not "max-contract" players but good players. I'd like the bulls to keep both of them (provided of course they don't overpay for either) - Members of the Chicago Bears were involved in a "simon says" game at half-time and were sitting at the other end of our row. David Terrell, R.W. McQuarters, Jerry Azumah, Bobby Wade, and Berrian were among the Bears present. For most of the third quarter, they were mobbed by fans trying to get autographs and their tickets to the game or whatever scrap of paper they could find. One youngster asked the bears to sign the back of the shirt he was wearing. One man had one of the Bears sign his 10 month-old baby. - With the Bulls winning the game and scoring over a 100 points, I have 48 hours to cash in on a free big mac at mcDonalds. mmm, free. - I took my camera and took a fair amount of pictures. I'll add sorting through those pictures to my "to-do" wishlist Posted at 12:30 AM   Mon - December 6, 2004Sat - November 20, 2004Pacers Pistons Brawl [Updated]I hope that the NBA looks at the end of the
Pistons-Pacers game on friday night as two separate incidents and doles out the
sanctions quickly.
Everything that happened before the fan threw a projectile at Ron Artest (and he stormed into the crowd) should be dealt with under the normal NBA rules that cover flagrant fouls and fighting. Artest committed a level 1 flagrant foul on ben Wallace (not a level two flagrant that carries an automatic 1-game suspension), Wallace over-reacted and threw a punch which merits at minimum a 2 game suspension. Stephen Jackson threw a punch with merits a 2 game suspension. A number of players left the bench areas which are also automatic one-game suspensions. What happened after Ron Artest took exception to the projectile and charged into the stands is significantly more complicated. From the NBA's point of view, I would guess that they have to dole out 5-10-20 game suspensions to Artest and Jackson for escalating the incident and running into the crowd. I don't think that the NBA can be justified in reprimanding any of the other players. Their roles were initially as peacemakers, then as targets for the fans. Particularly when the fans on the floor began threatening players. I think Artest and Jermaine O'Neal were (at that point) defending themselves. The Pistons (and all NBA teams) are going to have to have more security personnel behind the scorers table and generally courtside. The fans that threw projectiles at the players ought to be barred from future NBA games. My moralism wants to suggest that beer sales be curtailed midway through the 4th quarter, but this sort of outburst can really happen at any point (and I am too savvy in the ways of the world to imagine that alcohol sales would be suspended at sporting events). How the law enforcement community reacts will the most interesting thing. Will they file charges against the NBA players (Artest, Jackson, JO) who struck hooligans (er, fans)? Will they file charges against fans that threw chairs and ice at the visiting team? Will individual fans file lawsuits to get their hands on some NBA money? Clearly, this is not good for the NBA. Having been a supporter of the NBA my entire life, I hope the league can take a position on this that is fair and balanced. I don't want to see Ron Artest or Stephen Jackson scapegoated as the cause of all this. I don't want to see pro-basketball have be to played in a steel-cage. Hopefully this is that sort of once-in-a-lifetime perfect storm that once we've seen we'll never let recreate itself. Update: The NBA announced it's sanctions against those involved in the incident in Detroit on Friday night. Artest banned for remainder of season (70+ games), JO & Stephen Jackson for 25 and 30 games respectively. While there will an appeal from the players association, I think only JO has a chance of having his suspension shortened. Now that one shoe has dropped, the question is when the other (legal action against the players/fans) will. Posted at 11:39 AM   Sun - November 7, 2004IrritiBullSo, I've watched parts of the chicago bulls
first two games now, and have to say that I'm impressed with Paxson & Skiles
decision to bring in "effort" guys. Winning more than 30 games is still going
to be tough (unless, Eddy Curry fulfills all his upside immediately), but the
fans are going to enjoy watching this group play. Their opponents will soon
dub them the "IrritiBulls" for their tenacity. Let's hope that adding Curry and
A. Davis to the mix doesn't change that aspect of
things.
General notes: - Luol Deng looks so smooth out there. I see a little James Worthy in him (minus the isolation play for now) - Ben Gordon reminds me of Chauncey Billups (who in turn reminds me of a more offensive-minded Joe Dumars) which means that might take a while for him to blossom. Still 17pts in your second pro game's not the slowest of starts. - Nocione, the Argentinean, is going to be a fan favorite. - Chris Doohan reminds us that being a 4 year starter in college makes you more seasoned than alot of guys in their 3rd year in the NBA. - You have to root for Reiner. - Othella Harrington has been a pleasant surprise (although he'll move back two places in the big-man rotation when Curry and Davis get back) - Hinrich is clearly comfortable being "the man" out there. - Chandler (contract year) has to do much more if he wants to see a big pay-day. He's got great energy, but still makes bad fouls and hasn't developed his offensive game. But, it's the "fragile" tag on him (think toronto Marcus Camby) that's the big worry. - So much depends on Eddy Curry (contract year). If he can be the force that gets them 16 inside points and can command a double then the bulls have improved their corps of outside shooters and might make some noise this year. If he's a bust... Posted at 09:51 AM   Sun - October 31, 2004Under Pressure: NBA 2004-05 Eastern ConferenceIn the NBA, lots of people have something to
prove. I'm going to call this list "contract
year".
Atlanta Hawks: Is Antoine Walker (contract year), employee number 8, really an All-Star type player? Or was that bad season in Dallas an omen of things to come? Is Al Harrington ready to break out or is he just a scorer (think young Ron Mercer)? Predictions: won't make playoffs. Walker traded at mid-season. Rookies underwhelm. Boston Celtics: Is Gary Payton (contract year) finished? Or was that season in LA an aberration? Is LaFrentz going to be worth the money coming back from injury? How much can they expect from their high-schooler rookies. Predictions: Low seed in the east. Pierce an All-Star. Payton solid 14ppg/ 7 apg. Charlotte Bobcats: Expansion teams have very little to prove. Let's see if Okafor can play PF in the league (hopefully they won't try to trot him out at C) and if Gerald Wallace is more than just raw athleticism. Predictions: Win 15 games. Chicago Bulls: Eddy Curry and Tyson Chandler are in contract years, and consequently have come to camp in great shape at least. The rookies have something to prove: Deng that he's athletic enough to play in the NBA & Gordon that he's big enough to play 2. Argentinean Nocioni should bring some energy and veteran Piatkowski should bring some outside presence, but it all depends on whether or not Curry (& to a lesser degree Chandler) is for real. Predictions: Win 30 games. No playoffs. Cleveland Cavaliers: GM Jim Paxson has to hope that the team doesn't take a step backwards after the Carlos Boozer Fiasco. Drew Gooden has to prove that he was worth being such a high draft pick a few years ago (already on this third team). Good move -- bringing in Eric Snow to play point and shifting LeBron James to the 2. LeBron should have it easy this year, and probably won't hit a sophomore slump. Predictions: If Ilgauskas stays healthy mid-seed in in Playoffs, if not struggle to make 8th. Detroit Pistons: Larry Brown has to prove that he can deal with success and wasn't burnt-out by the Olympic experience. McDyess is looking to prove that he can still be an elite player. Milicic that he's really a player. The team that they can keep focus after success. Predictions: Top 3 in the East, will advance far in the playoffs. Chance at repeat performance. Indiana Pacers: Stephen Jackson for Al Harrington? The numbers have to prove that one to people. Bender needs to show that he can turn potential into plays. The PGs have to show up. Jermaine needs to get used to being the "other" O'Neal in the East. Ron Ron needs to show that his good behavior last year wasn't a mirage. Reggie needs to decide how much more he has left in the tank. Predictions: Top 4 in the East, will get to second round of playoffs. Miami Heat: Shaq needs to show that he can still dominate. Eddie Jones & Wesley Person that they can hit an open three. Dwayne Wade needs to avoid the sophomore slump. Somebody's got to get Shaq's back and get some rebounds. Predictions: "Healthy Shaq" Top 3 in the East. "Injured Shaq" in the scrum for number 8. Milwaukee Bucks: Need to show that they replicate last years performance now that they won't sneak up on people. is TJ Ford going to play again? how many open shots is Michael Redd going to get w/o an inside presence? Has Keith Van Horn finally found a home? Predictions: Terry Porter's scrappy bunch will get back to the playoffs, won't make it out of the first round. New Jersey Nets: What can Jason Kidd do with less talent around him? Losing Kittles and KMart was significant, and their replacements aren't of the same caliber. How is Alonzo's comeback attempt going to go? How is Jefferson going to deal with defense keying on him. Predictions: Low playoff seed in the east at best (an injury to Kidd or Jefferson away from the lottery), won't make it past the first round. Mourning is limited to 30 games. New York Knicks: Pressure capital of the world. Lenny needs to do well enough to keep his job. Crawford needs to justify his contract and the trade. Marbury needs to accept the leadership of the team. Hardaway, Houston, Baker, Anderson all need to prove that they've still got something left in their tanks. Tim Thomas - that he's not just an athlete who happens to play basketball. Predictions: Isiah will make more trades during the season, no one knows what the team will look like at the end of the season. The Knicks will have a different coach by play-off time. They'll make the playoffs seeded somewhere between 3 & 6. Won't make it to the finals this year. Orlando Magic: Stevie Francis needs to prove that he wasn't the problem in Houston. Grant Hill - that even a shadow of the player he was is still pretty good. Dwight Howard - was the number 1 pick well-spent. Predictions: Worst record to playoff contender. In the fight for number 8. Hill will play 50 games. Francis & Mobley will have good seasons. Phildelphia 76ers: Iverson goes back to point guard after a "maturing" olympic experience. O'Brien needs to prove that the problems in Boston were more Danny Ainge's fault that his. Glenn Robinson (contract year) needs to prove that he's still a commodity in the NBA. The youngsters -Iguodala, Green, Dalembert, etc. - need to show poise. Predictions: Good season for Iverson (20ppt, 7apg), Big Dog a bust. Still playoff caliber. Toronto Raptors: Is Vince worth all the trouble? Was Bosh a fluke? Is Jalen Rose the sort that makes teammates better or not? Predictions: VC gets traded. Team wins 30 games. No playoffs. Washington Wizards: Kwame Brown is in a contract year. Jamison needs to show that he's really an All-Star type player. Predictions: Back to the lottery. Posted at 12:47 PM   Tue - October 26, 2004NBA TeaserThis may be the season that all those
conspiracy theorists are proved to be prophetic. The league has been waiting
for an east-west* rivalry like the lakers-celtics of the 80s for over a decade
now. Now, we've got a personal rivalry bigger than anything we've seen in years
(Shaq & Kobe) and if the conspiracy theorists are right we'll see this
improbable** match-up in June in the
finals.
![]() I wouldn't bet a dime on it, but you can be sure that there's an executive or two at the NBA office who wants that match-up this year. I'm going to do my NBA preview in several parts this year and will likely overlap the first week of the season. Up Next: Through Thick & Thin with the Chicago Bulls -- * Chicago-Utah? Whatever. ** On paper the Miami Shaqs are in the East's top three, while the LA Kobes are the 7th or 8th best team in the West. Neither team is particularly deep, and both are an injury or two away from the lottery. Posted at 11:12 PM   Thu - October 21, 2004Yankees make history!Wow. Can I make predictions or what? "The
Yankees will beat the Red Sox", I made that prediction before the series
started, and felt mighty comfortable with it at the end of game 3. Who would
have thought that the yankees would lose 4 in a row? Or that the red sox would
show none of their flaws for 4 consecutive games? It'll be fascinating to see
how history remembers this
one.
While I didn't see it coming, I have to say it's nice that the richest team doesn't always win. The benefit of a yankees loss is that it lets big Stein do something wacky during the off-season. The hot stove league is much more interesting when Steinbrenner is cutting the checks. Still no career as a professional prognosticator for me. Posted at 02:16 AM   Wed - October 13, 2004Mo Rivera is the mystique of the yankeesI caught parts of the Yankee-RedSox game when
the presidential debate wasn't on (and when I successfully procrastinated
schoolwork tonight). I found the yankee-stadium crowd's chant of: "Who's your
daddy?" to be amusing. The subtitle of Game 2 should have been
"Paternity
Test".
Over lunch yesterday I made the following statements: Mo Rivera is the most important player in playoffs. These Yankees are built to win 10-8, 6-4 slugfests. A-Rod, a former MVP and home-run champ hits second for them! That's unheard of! Neither Foulke or Gordon are as good as advertised (I've watched both pitch for the White Sox in the last few seasons...). Yankees will beat the Red Sox and then lose to whoever comes out of the NL. While I'm writing about baseball, let me add the following: Playoff baseball is so much better than regular season baseball. Beltran looks like the next A-Rod. Larry Walker is one of my favorite players in big leagues. Biggio & Bagwell are like Stockton-to-Malone. The Cards are like a mirror image of the Yankees lineupwise (and with a pitching staff in shambles). It's tough to root for the $180Million payroll, so go NL! Posted at 11:59 PM   |
